In light of the amount of schools/colleges being shut down globally thanks to the corona virus/covid-19, I thought a little info graphic could be of use to people!

Oof, I dont most that often anymore because I’ve been working everyday to try to pay for college, and I still am super behind :( I’m sort of first gen and trying to figure out payments and everything is so rough and definitely not something most college studyblrs talk about. I dont like asking for help but I’m going to leave my cashapp down below in case anyone wants to and can help, thank you guys so much for being patient while I figure things out and get back into the swing of school!

I’m back!!
I’m so sorry I went MIA for a while, but here are some little life updates for everyone:
• I got accepted into 5/6 of the colleges I applied to and waitlisted at the last one
• I graduated 5th of my class with a weighted average of 99.7
• I got my advanced regents diploma with honors
And finally
• I GOT THE IB DIPLOMA!!!! A total of 29 points!
I plan to be back and making content and stuff on this account during college to try to help myself stay on track over the next 4 years, but I’m not too good at commitment so we’ll see how that goes haha

TOP TIPS FOR YOUR PERSONAL STATEMENT
Hello! I’m about to start uni in a few weeks so I thought now would be a good time to share my top tips for writing a good personal statement. There is no ‘special formula’ for writing a good one but these are some tips I picked up from family, friends, online articles, teachers and universities themselves:
WHAT SHOULD I WRITE ABOUT?
you need to say why you want to study that course - how your interest developed, how you’ve pursued it (e.g. extracurricular activities), how you’ve drawn inspiration - basically demonstrate a lot of enthusiasm but be specific
give evidence that you’re right for the course - demonstrate with examples that you have researched it, understand what it entails and have the correct skills
say what you’ve done outside of the classroom - further reading and opinions (but try to be original - don’t talk about books that are really well-known in your subject)
explain why your experiences are relevant to the course and to a future career - reflect on experiences, don’t describe them!
give examples of transferable skills - teamwork, time management, problem solving, etc. and then expand on the most relevant skills - success in projects, how you grew from particular experiences, biggest challenges you’ve faced, etc.
also show you’re a critical thinker and mention long term plans
AN EXAMPLE:
as an example, here’s what I wrote about in my personal statement:
a public lecture I’d been to at a local university and how this inspired me (you could watch a TED talk online and discuss it)
how I was interested by the lab equipment and research I’d seen at a university when I went on a taster day
hobbies I have and how I was interested in my subject outside of school (books, magazines, podcasts I like and why)
a line about my EPQ and how this follows on from a podcast I listened to
how I’m finding my A level subjects (e.g. I enjoy science practicals)
how my AS levels helped me (e.g. AS history really helped me with essay writing)
what I learned from tutoring some GCSE students and volunteering at a charity shop
how I found shadowing a PhD student at a local university - how this inspired me and motivated me in my chosen subject
TRY TO INCLUDE:
paragraphs and GOOD GRAMMAR!!!!!
balance of academic and extra-curricular
evidence you’ve done research
show genuine engagement
lateral thinking - link to a more obscure theme that you find interesting
honesty and a desire to study
what you want from course
positivity
CURIOSITY!
make it interesting, thoughtful and personal - say what inspires you
DON’T INCLUDE:
academic achievements - unis know what qualifications you have and which grades you’re predicted so don’t waste your characters!
quotes - this is YOUR personal statement, not Winston Churchill’s!!
lists - you need detail and explanations
clichés - you have not wanted to be a doctor for as long as you can remember!
sweeping statements
‘passion’ and other commonly-used words
stilted vocabulary - use language that you actually use (but not slang)
exaggeration
humour - it’s a dangerous move to use humour
negativity
irrelevant facts - it’s not a school essay!
OVERALL:
show not tell - “I’ve been able to develop my communication skills by tutoring three GCSE science students” is better than saying “I’m a good communicator”
DRAFT!!!! you will not be able to write a good personal statement in one go - it took me months of regular drafting and re-writing to get mine even close to being finished!
get help! ask friends, family, teachers, etc. to read it and give feedback
don’t be too precious about it - you will have to cut bits out, shorten sentences, lengthen sentences, delete words, re-arrange the structure, etc. so try to stay open minded!
one uni I visited on an open day suggested using the ABC formula: A is for Activity (say what you did), B is for Benefit (say the skills you gained from the activity) and then C is for Course (relate it to the course and say how it prepares you) - I didn’t use this myself but I have friends who found it useful!
be specific! don’t say “I love French” - say “I love how learning new languages helps me to understand the world around me….”

sometimes the world will move quickly and all you’re going to do is try to catch up – but please know that you’re allowed to go at your own pace, no matter how fast things may get around you; take all the time that you need, when you need it, because we’ll be here when you’re ready
To All The Books I’ve Bought Before And Still Haven’t Read
If you think you’re doing as much as you can when you study and your grades don’t reflect the effort you’re putting in, these tips might be the key
keep your energy up: it’s no use studying if you’re too tired to process the information, after all so before you start studying make sure that you aren’t feeling sluggish or tired. To combat this, I recommend:
exercise: do 10 pushups, jumping jacks, or dance around for a few minutes before you start working or anytime you catch yourself drifting
eat something: one of the best things to do if you’re sluggish is to drink water. Keep water by you while you study and eat some healthy foods like apples, bananas, and almonds.
be smart about where you study: don’t study in bed!!!! Your brain associates your bed with sleep and you will feel tired if you study in bed. Find a quiet, well lit area with lots of room for the most effective studying. Make sure you have water (and food) on hand. The ambiance of where you study is also very important:
don’t listen to music: you might think that you study better when listening to music, but you don’t. It’s been proven that listening to music while working is a form of multitasking, which slows down your efficiency. If you really want to listen to music, listen to instrumental music or songs you don’t know and a low volume. I personally like listening to ambiance noises when I’m studying.
lighting is important: a dark studying environment isn’t helpful for obvious reasons. Turn on a lamp to keep you awake and alert. (Make sure you turn the brightness down on your electronics, though. The strain put on your eyes by bright blue light does more harm than good).
draw up a plan: have 3 subjects to study for? It looks a lot less daunting if you break it up into manageable chunks. Maybe decide to study chemistry for 30 minutes then move on to math for an hour. Plan this out several days in advance so that you can have something of a weekly schedule. Beyond that, plan how you’re going to study for the subject. For example, plan to read your math notes then do a practice quiz instead of just giving an amount of time.
put away distractions: all the studying advice in the world can’t help you if you’re getting distracted every few minutes by your phone. Put it in another room or with your parents or use an app to block procrastination. Close extra tabs, clear clutter from your study space, and turn off your notifications. Be ruthless in clearing away distractions.
study smart: I’ve talked about this before, but being an active studyer is way more helpful than being passive. Passive studying is reading your textbook or notes without engaging in any other way. A way to actively study a textbook could be to highlight as you go through or to take notes. The best ways to actively study are to teach someone else and to do practice tests (some more examples are making study guides and working out problems out loud).
understanding is key: understanding the material goes a long way in preparing you because pure memorization without understanding is how people study for hours and still fail. A good rule of thumb to see if you understand a topic is if you can teach it, you know it. However, with things you need to memorize like formulas and vocabulary, study those (my favorite way is to create acrostics) a little every day.
use different methods for one topic: even if you’re actively studying, using one method can become horribly monotonous. Plus, if you attack from all angles you have a much better chance at understanding. Make flashcards to go along with notes, draw charts and diagrams, and make mind maps.
watch videos and get outside help: there are a lot of credible websites out there like Khan Academy and Crash Course if you need an extra lesson on a topic you haven’t quite mastered.
take breaks: space out your studying! Maybe later I’ll make a post on how to cram, but a big reason cramming isn’t as advantageous is that you can’t break up your studying. 15 minutes every day is a lot of cumulative studying and way better than studying 3 hours in a panic the day before. Taking breaks during a longer studying session is also helpful. I like to utilize the pomodoro method, which is longer study sessions broken up by short breaks.
join a study group: study groups or study buddies can be super helpful in understanding material, as the other people are learning with you. Then might explain it in a way that makes more sense to you, or you might test your understanding by explaining something to them. Make sure you actually study though, it’s all to easy to lose a few hours to messing around on your phones together. Keep each other in check, don’t be enablers
