A friend of mine is struggling to the point of being on the verge of homeless thanks to one of their now ex roommates screwing them over not only with rent but with other things that are now also biting them in the butt. I. End of Adventure
As the last one to step out of the portal, you looked for the group and found they settled in the lounge area. A subtle pain twisted within your chest watching them from afar, but you kept moving towards them. It was better to let them know you weren't going to join them to avoid anyone coming to find you. Speaking of, Pomni was the first to notice you out of the corner of her eye.
"You're heading in early?" The jester probed gently. You opened your mouth to speak and closed it with a nodding smile. Pomni nodded and returned the gesture, her attention switched from you to another member. You pursed your lips and walked away from the group, across your arms around yourself as you blinked away the flaming sensation gathering at your eyes. It has always been like this since you've joined the circus. Always being alone. The outlier. The 'shy' one. You didn't mean to keep to yourself all the time. In fact, you've fantasized interacting with each member in a meaningful way…it's just…never happened.
"Another adventure, another sleepless night…" You said to yourself and stopped in front of your door. Staring into the replica of your face, you reached for it only to drop your arm to the door knob. Stepping inside of your dark bedroom, you ignored the picture frames of people, crowds, and friends hanging out and smiling back at you. Pressing your weight against the soft cushion of the mattress and sheets, your eyelids fell down. Something felt different this time, a pleasant tenderness washed over your form and the rock sitting on your lungs went away. Your furrowed brow melted as your clenched jaw relaxed with a soothing melody buzzing in your mind.
II. Knock-knock
A knock came to the door, interrupting your moment of solace and causing your heart to jump out of your chest. Sitting up with your elbows you stared at the door, then got up to open it. There stood, or rather floated, Caine. The ringleader fiddled with his tie absentmindedly. He only noticed you had opened the door when your voice called out his name softly.
"Hm? Ah! Finally, for a second I thought you were-" Caine's passionate tone screeched to a halt as he met your eyes. For a moment, he thought his mind was playing tricks on him…or did he really see rings of colors? That would only mean…
"Thought I was…?" You raised a brow. Caine laughed loudly as he snatched a hold of your arm.
"Thought you were sleeping! That's what!" A snap of his middle finger and thumb transported the two of you in his office. You were chucked into a couch and a blanket was thrown on top of you.
III. Childhood
"Caine? Wh..why?" You shook the blanket off of your head and allowed it to pool at your waist. "Did…you need me for something or…"
"Shhh, shh, shh! As queen bee of this swarm it is my duty to make sure all my little bees are in tiptop shape! I cannot have any of you going off script and messing up my plans! Now." Caine sat in his swirled seat and kicked his legs onto his desk. A notepad and pencil appeared in his clutches, his wide eyes boring into your face.
"Tell me about your childhood!"
"…I don't remember." A bold lie. You felt hot from the attention placed on you, his eyes weren't holding back and the feeling of them studying every inch of your face didn't help. Not when you were already on edge about being alone with Caine of all people.
"ERR! Wrong, try again." Caine shook his dentures and wrote something down. "Tell me about your parents, your friends, did you have any of that?"
"…" You lowered your head and stared at the floor.
"…?" Caine called out your name while glancing over the top of the notepad. His pupils shrunk as he leapt to lean over his desk, kicking his legs in the air, and papers flew around as he waved a hand frantically.
"Wait, wait, do not answer that! I mean…Uh, how about the humans in here? You must have made a lot of memories with them at least!" Caine patted his back, using his stretched limb reaching all the way behind him to do so. "All thanks to my masterpieces of adventures, of course!"
"…" Again, you chose to remain silent. Twisting the fabric of the blanket on your lap, you couldn't find the strength to raise your head. Caine clicked his tongue and floated over to you, taking his place beside your hunched form he reached over to touch your shoulder. Caine frowned and removed his hand as he felt your shoulder tense up.
"Look, you are not giving me much to work with and I have tried getting to the root of the problem but you are…not talking? You see where the problem is?" Caine chided while using his hands to speak. "I cannot help you if you're not bee'ing helpful to me!"
"I'm sorry." You mumbled. An amused grin threatened to crack from that lame joke but you pressed your lips together to keep it hidden. A shine circled Caine's irises as a small stammer escaped him before he straightened out his back. If there was one thing Caine enjoyed about interacting with you was your sense of humor. He'd catch you hiding your smiles and expressions whenever his antics caused the other members to stray. It made him feel good knowing someone enjoyed his jokes, albeit even if said human hid it behind a hand or turned head. The ringleader coughed into his fist while fixing himself up.
"Yeah, well, I accept your terrible apology if you tell me what's going on! You know I care about each and every one of you!" Caine exclaimed with a puff of his chest. You swayed your head from side to side, clasping your hands together and lifting your head a little to meet Caine's intense gaze for a second.
"I..I don't wanna bother you with my problems, Caine," You exhaled and allowed the tension in your shoulders to drop. You smirked, risking the embarrassment to tease the AI. "You have enough on your plate already…and how will I know you won't go blabbing all of this to anyone else?"
"Oh my word! You think I would do such a thing?! Never!" Caine gasped and held a hand against his buttoned up shirt. The AI's eyes shifted as he scratched the space between his teeth. "Well…actually…"
You shook your head and leaned back on the couch pillow. "I'm fine, really. I'll do better, I promise."
"I will hold you to that, human," Caine grinned. "I will be keeping an eye or few on you to make sure your end of the deal is upheld!"
"Let's…not do all of that…"
"Nonsense! By the way, since I have you here for an indefinite amount of time…" A large box appeared in your lap.
IV. The Puzzle
"You can help sort my three thousand piece puzzle I have not finished due to planning so many adventures!"
"Wait, you want me to complete this?!" You held the box and shook it. A sense of dread clouding your stomach as the piece sounded like there was a lot in there. Caine floated in the air and patted your head quickly.
"YEP! I have to keep you busy somehow while I go bother the rest of the crew! I will even throw in a award if you finish half of it by the time I get back!" Caine grabbed a hold of his cane and disappeared before you could blink. Reaching for the air where he once hovered in, you frowned and turned to the box. Opening the box and slipping down from the couch to the floor, you spilled the pieces and began organizing them. From the ajar door leading to the office, you didn't notice a blue and green eye watching you with an pleased glint.
It was so nice seeing her ! I'm glad she's safe up in heaven. ^^
