My only goal in life is to reach this level of peace
I was just about to spiral into a bad panic attack, and my boyfriend goes "Stick an ice cube in your mouth." I'm not really sure where he got the idea, and I kinda laughed at it because I didn't see how it would help, but he was insistent. So I did it.
And now I'm on my second cube, because it worked.
He explained his reasoning to me when he got home.
1. I would initially think "what the fuck" and be distracted from the anxiety. (Correct.)
2. The cold of the ice would shock my system, bringing me back to the physical world and reality, drawing my focus to the cold in my mouth, and keep my brain away from thinking "I'm panicking, I must be dying." (Correct.)
3. He assumed I hadn't drank much water today and wanted to keep me hydrated. (Triple correct.)
It also forced your mouth to make saliva!
When you go into fight or flight mode, non-crucial body functions stop working so you have more energy to do what you need to do to survive (oooor to spiral into a panic attack). By forcing yourself to make saliva it helps calm you down because since fight or flight is an all or nothing response, they can’t happen at the same time.
Learned that from my old therapist, who would use it with veterans with ptsd
I’m doing this right now and its working????
THIS! Do this!
Anxiety is an emotional thing BUT there are feedback systems in place in your body that pay attention to physical states as well, which is why you then experience raised heart rate and so on when anxious. Eliminate or confuse one feedback system? Reduce anxiety.
Go be free!
biting into a lemon also works
Btw, this is part of Dialectic Behavioural Therapy, DBT for short, which was invented by a woman with borderline. It doesn't only work with panic attacks but also self harm, negative thought spirals, and sometimes even intrusive flashbacks.
Eating very spicey stuff works as well. I used to keep little packets of wasabi in my jacket, and that saved me more times I can count.

Honestly, as a German I can not quite understand the obsession of the English speaking world with the question whether a word exists or not. If you have to express something for which there is no word, you have to make a new one, preferably by combining well-known words, and in the very same moment it starts to exist. Agree?
Deutsche Freunde, could you please create for me a word for the extreme depression I feel when I bend down to pick up a piece of litter and discover two more pieces of litter?

This is a german compound on the spot master class and I am LIVING
#my german is still too basic for this but I desperately want a compound word for how much these compound words piss me off
das Monster = monster

Monsterwortbildungsimitationsunfähigkeitsverzweiflungsgroll
die Bildung = formation
die Imitation = imitation

Marvel Comics #1000: We’re Calling Him Ben
I feel this is an important addition. He saves so many people on a regular basis that this just keeps happening. And he feels so much for his uncle that the answer is always the same.

Entertainment Spotlight: Abigail Shapiro, Doom Patrol
DC Universe’s hit series Doom Patrol just returned, following a group of five outcast superheroes assembled and led by a modern-day scientist, AKA The Chief. Abigail Shapiro stars as newcomer Dorothy Spinner, the Chief’s mysterious daughter. She began her career at just 12 years old with the role of Cindy-Lou in How the Grinch Stole Christmas: The Musical. She then went on to play Liberty in the off-Broadway production of Liberty: A Monumental New Musical, and performed alongside her sister Milly in the sister-duo cabaret, The Shapiro Sisters. Abigail is a staunch environmentalist and an advocate for or the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) and CCD Smiles, raising awareness for Cleidocranial Dysplasia (CCD), a rare bone disorder from which she suffers. Abigail took the time to answer some of our questions about Doom Patrol, acting, and more. Check it out:
Can you tell us a bit about your character, Dorothy? What do you like/dislike about her?
Dorothy is the daughter of Niles and the primitive woman he had an affair with during his expedition to the Yukon in 1917. She has the face of an ape and can bring to life whatever she can imagine. She has a little group of imaginary friends, some are good and some are not, who manifest whenever she is very emotional in some way. She doesn’t have much control over her powers, and because of that, she has the potential to destroy the world. What I like about her is that she wants to keep the people she loves safe. I don’t like that she keeps secrets.
The show is about a group of outcasts helping each other come to terms with their difficult pasts—what struck you about this story and captured your imagination?
What struck me about the story is that it’s so different from your normal superhero show. The show focuses on the humanity of these people and isn’t afraid to explore the darker sides of it, but it also has those hilarious, weird, quirky moments that the show is known for. So, it definitely has a wide range of topics.
If you were a superhero, what kind of powers would you have?
I would want to ability to be able to speak any language fluently after just hearing one sentence in that language!
What do you like to do when you’re not on stage or in front of the camera?
I love to run and swim and dance. I’m that weird person who actually likes exercise and moving around a lot.
Can you remember your first-ever performance? Did you know then that this is what you wanted to do?
I feel like I was born wanting to do this – wanting to tell stories. My first performance was when I was about four years old, and it was my dance recital. I barely remember it, but all I know was that I was the only one on stage who knew the choreography. I just remember having so much fun. I’ve never stopped training and working for this ever since then.
You’ve worked with your sister on a cabaret show. What was it like working with family? Where did the inspiration for The Shapiro Sisters come from?
I love working with my sister and want to work with her again in the future. We decided to do a cabaret in 2014 because my sister and I have a very interesting story. We were both cast in two different Broadway shows at the same time after our first auditions, which almost never happens. Because we had such a unique story, we decided to write a cabaret show about it. We were the first minors to write and perform our own cabaret show at 54 Below in NYC. My sister was 11, and I was 13.
Do you have a personal motto or mantra?
Lead with love. <3
Thanks for taking the time, Abigail! Episodes 1 and 2 of Doom Patrol Season 2 are now streaming on HBO Max.

when u know somebody is lyin
thinking about the time I was in ballet and during a performance I was in a private dressing room and this other ballerina knocked on the door and asked to come in and hang out between acts and I was like sure and he sat down and he was like “anyway” before I even said something “what are your theories on bigfoot? I think he’s an interdimensional being,” then he explained why with such confidence that I believed him fully and then before I could add on he was like “oh that’s your cue” and I had to go do pique turns or whatever as if my life weren’t changed
