Photos I've taken, of surreal things and situations
Kyoto - Botanical arrangements at a small machiya inn - Kingyo-ya
I compulsively take photos of structures and interiors.
This is the phase in architecture school when I said, "When I grow up, I want to be Zaha Hadid. Project was a "Travel Bureau" that would occupy the traffic islands in front of the Flat Iron Building. The building itself would give a 'framed view' of the Flat Iron and Empire State buildings. The form is based on the traffic patterns of the area, projected sideways.
Planetarium Concept - The planetarium (sphere) would be suspended above the piers on the Hudson River. The roof of the monument (museum area) that supports the planetarium sphere, would be an earth-bermed / green roof. The poles on the piers indicate the position of the sun between the winter and summer solstice as you stand on the piers.
Logo I did for Sing Sing Karaoke lounge, on St. Marks. I also created a Susan Boyle "HOPE" poster - for every karaoke singer who dream of making it big.
When the winter sun hits Manhattan, it creates very dramatic photo opportunities…Sometimes called “Manhattan Henge” (like Stonehenge), the sun aligns with the grid of the island and creates these dramatic shadows and intense light. In most of the photos above, I used the iPhone with an Olloclip fisheye lens and Camera Plus App for filters.
Hanko Seals Galore!!! I've been commissioned to make numerous hanko / seals over the years...For dojos as well as for individuals. Most of them are Japanese style hanko seals, but I've done Irish spirals and art deco as well.
Strange Things and Surreal Visions....NY Underwater, Disappearing piano (someone threw away a piano and it kept being dismantled, little at a time.), Red Chair (found old school chairs on the street and re-painted them red.), a kid bicycling on the US Map in Harlem, and a Nomadic Shelter for one person.
Architectural concept - Maritime Museum in downtown Manhattan. Plus hand-made lens and pinhole camera work using the Maritime Museum as a model - Sorry - Need to rescan the low-res GIFS...placeholders for now.
Black and white paintings and drawings. Titles from top to bottom: Black Dawn, Monitor Conversation, NYC subway, Sweets, Altared States, Storyboard for “Drunken Boat”, Amadou Diallo, and Walk in Central Park.
Best of Kai Photos, by mommy.
Photos from Paris and Nice. Arc de Triomphe staircase, Church of St Sulpice (made famous in Davinci Code), and some random door in Paris, Walls in Nice.
Old School FormZ renderings, based on Rem Koolhaas / OMA's Villa Dall'Ava
I visited Las Vegas three times in the past three years, to attend the annual Consumer Electronics Show. Since reading "Learning from Las Vegas", I have been curious to visit this town, but had almost no time documenting it, as I spent most of the time at the CES. One thing that does boggle my mind is the sheer scale of it all.
