July is disability pride month but it's also Narcisstic Personality Disorder Awareness month. NPD is a highly demonised and misunderstood disorder even amongst so called professionals.

Disability pride should highlight every disability, not just the "romantic" ones. If you know a person who suffers from NPD, acknowledge them. Acknowledge their humanity.

Anyway normalize stutters, stilted speech, flat affect, monotone speech, volume control issues, nonverbal communication devices, voice modulators, speech impediments, lisps, oral deformities.

Normalize "abnormal" speech patterns. Normalize lack of eye contact, normalize ticking, normalize emphasis on different syllables. Normalize "Inappropriate" emoting, especially when it's a stress response.

Normalize verbally processing thoughts, external system communication, non- aggressive interaction with hallucinations or delusions.

Normalize Echolalia, "TV Talking", vocal stimming, parroting, "Baby talk" as a way to self soothe.

To those whose doctors are trying their best, and to those whose doctors aren't. To those with test results, and those without. To those whose prognosis isn't looking good. To those scared by the course of their symptoms, and with no idea what's going to happen next. Living undiagnosed is hard, and I wish you all luck.

before this post breaches containment and people start going “why not both hehehe” i want you to seriously consider the very long history of disabled people’s existence being pushed aside and/or seen as secondary. i promise you it’s not going to hurt to hold onto the memes and give disabled people space for visibility and celebration.

i say this as a disabled trans person whose trans identity is made front-and-center to the (mainly cis) people who know i’m trans but my identity as a disabled person is brushed off by the very same people.

even though pride month is coming to an end, don't despair! july is disability pride month, which is just as cool and awesome and important - but in previous years, i haven't see a ton of posts or information about it. so, i'm going to do my part in fixing that! each day of disability pride month, i'm going to post a recommendation of a different piece of media with disabled main characters. the goal is to raise some awareness about some cool books/movies/tv shows/documentaries and hopefully get people into the disability pride month spirt! stay tuned for day one on tuesday :)
