I have given up thinking any individual on modern social media is a thinking person. Among the socially engineered left and right, the pornbots, the angry and the desperate, real objective thought is lost. This is quite apparent when one parses the mass of online content. There are more pictures than words, more flashing lights than critical thought, than implicit understanding. We’ve degenerated to the level of animals, only capable of the most basic communication of anger, fear and desperation. Pictographs have crept back into vogue, allowing people to represent a concept with a picture, but lacking the verbal and literacy skills to accurately explain and expound on these concepts.
I came to Tumblr to gain a wider audience for my writing, to open dialogues with creative people, to find and share and build ideas. Unfortunately, Tumblr is no different from any social platform in that it insulates and incubates the most vile and exteme of views, pitting prescribed views against one another for the sake of popularity. These views are prescribed. You are told what to think, whether you want to believe it or not. You fall into the trap of black-and-white empiricism, thinking that is something is not one way, it can be no way.
You and I and everyone else on this desolate internet have lost the ability to think critically, to question what we are told from ALL sides, not just the one we’re told not to agree with. We have sold our intellect for useless information, sold our literacy for likes..
A very specific peeve
I am bothered by so many people misusing the word “cybernetic”. This word does not explicitly refer to robots, nor is it even about robotics in general.. Cybernetics refers to a system of understanding feedback relationships between living things, other living things and technology. Cybernetics, in this its true context, must be understood as existing well before robots were ever conceptualized. Indeed, the concept of cybernetics has been around since life began, regardless of a Human definition and understanding.
I could rail against so many other words and perhaps one day I will, but today I chose to wax pedantic on this specific word that I see so often misused. I am satisfied.

Why can we not seem to understand one another, despite the confluence of ideas and language that rest on the mighty pillars of the Internet? Quite simply, because we are trying to relate to one another using antiquated concepts in the here and right now. For two ideas to merge, in this time, the communicators must converse with all the force and understanding of all the concepts that have come before. To do that, we must understand everything to which everything else refers. In an age where everything is a representation of something else it is difficult to understand what is truly original, what the thing is that is being referred to at all. In so doing we must dig and dig, never coming closer to an answer and obscuring all possible paths to retrace. Now, all that would be far too much work for the mundane conversation, so we conjure up an analogy, a reference to the past that allows us to frame and shape our dialogue in familiar terms. Familiarity is not universal; one man’s analogy is another‘s semantic nightmare.
Why can’t we communicate? Because we‘ve buried the language in analogy, and these analogical allegories we construct to imbue our words with meaning have come to replace each other with frightening speed, so as to render any contemporary understanding of the meaning of words as null. No one knows to which original any image refers, thus, the images lose their meaning in place of whatever meaning we give them. When everyone gives everything their own personal meaning, nothing means anything. The language does not die; it is constantly in flux, perpetually adapting to ever-changing referents.

We all have struggles. The uniting factor isn’t skin colour, it isn’t language, not sex or gender, nationality or political affiliation. The uniting factor in all our struggles is that we’re having them together. That’s what Humanity is: sharing and understanding our collective HUMAN struggle.
