Kapwa: The Filipino Magazine or Kapwa Magazine is a bi-monthly publication made and created for Filipinos to connect with and learn about our history, culture, languages, and people. Its purpose is to share with our community the beauty of the Philippines, her people, environment, and the rich diversity within the islands. We share our stories, from a mother immigrating to the states for a better life for her family, the struggles of racism and prejudice, the entrepreneur opening a Filipino restaurant or business in their community, the farmer concerned with climate change, and much more. Kapwa Magazine’s goal is to bridge the gap between our communities, from the Philippines to the diaspora. Giving a voice to the people while sharing the history, culture, folklore, and languages, is our goal. We encourage those who want to contribute to the magazine to share their stories, struggles, and experiences on life, identity, decolonization, gender and race issues, activism through organizations, and leadership within our communities.

We are now in the works of our second issue! If you plan to write for the magazine remember that submit all submissions by August 8, 2015! Originally I mentioned the deadline would be on the 3rd of August however I have decided to extend the date.

Remember to follow these guidelines when submitting!

It must be a minimum length of one page (meaning one side of a double sided standard computer sheet of paper) using Times New Roman, 12 pt font, no double spacing. There is no maximum length for the article.

You can write about anything as long as it involves the Pilipinx diaspora and/or the Philippines and can be read by all ages. The following are the main topics the magazine will be covering: Community, Culture, Health & Beauty, Fashion, Travel, Arts & Music, and Home & Lifestyle. So say if you want to submit any creative stories or poems or artwork they will fall under Arts & Music. If it’s about food it will fall under Home & Lifestyle, personal stories under Community, and so on.

You are encouraged to provide a photo/s or artwork to go along with your submissions. Any photos, artwork that go along with your submission, poems, creative stories, etc. must be your own and not someone else or found on the internet. If they were taken by a friend, family member, etc. of you, your group performing, etc. that has given permission for us to use you must note it in your submission.

Remember to include the title of your article/submission, your name, the name of the person who took the photo/s, and a short bio and photo of yourself for the contributors page.

One of the featured highlights for the second issue will be on Kapit Bisig, so if you are participating in the relief missions this summer feel free to submit your stories and experiences whether you are participating this year or even if you did last year.

We will also be covering the International Peoples Tribunal that is happening right now from July 16-18, so if you are in currently in Washington D.C. and attending feel free to submit your thoughts, what you learned, what was spoken, any photos, etc. to us. We do have several people from Anakbayan NJ & NY that I have talked with and who will be contributing.

Kapwa Magazine’s first issue for July/August is now available to read in digital format!

Go ahead and read it now!

I have caught a few mistakes after the issue was published online, mainly one, the other 2 was done on purpose in Binitay and PCN double page spreads. I created it like so specifically for the trims on the physical format which I thought would correspond on the digital as well. However it didn’t, and I will use that information for the next issue. I am waiting to receive my test copy of the issue in its physical published format to check for any imperfections. If you want to purchase a physical copy of the issue you can, but I do not suggest it right away until I have personally received a copy and checked it myself however if you insist feel free to. The cost of the physical copy covers the cost to actually publish and bind the issue for you through Magcloud with $1.80 going to Kapwa Magazine. The digital copy however will be free to read online for the entire month of July in celebration of our very first issue. In August however it will be priced at $4.99 for the digital copy.

 First issue is almost here! Any time now the magazine will be up and ready to be read by our kapwa in the diaspora. Within sometime tonight to Tuesday at the very latest, Kapwa Magazine’s first issue will be published. Here are the front and back covers of the July/August issue.

Submissions for the second issue for September/October are now being accepted! Deadline for submissions will be Monday, August 3, 2015.

Is it too late to be part of the Kapwa team?

Right now we have enough editors so I am not looking for any others. We are still looking for a few more designers however to help create the pages of the magazine so if you are interested in becoming a designer send in examples of your work in digital and graphic design. At least 5 examples would be great. Just send in your examples/portfolio and why you want to join the team and sent it to [email protected]

Other than designers I am looking for a few regular columnists so if you are a writer this can pertain to you. If you want to be regular columnist send in examples of your work once again to the email above.

Kapwa Magazine’s First Issue Sneak Peak!

We are still in the works of editing a few more articles and designing the pages, but I promise that all of you will enjoy this first issue of what I hope will be a long, successful, magazine for all of our kapwa.

Today is last day for any submissions to be featured and published in the first issue of Kapwa Magazine, a new upcoming bi-monthly digital magazine by Pilipinx’s, for Pilipinx’s touching up on our culture, health and beauty, our islands, social issues, and the lives and stories within the Pilipinx diaspora around the world.

My vision for the future is to give back to our people and provide them with a literary resource they can depend on to learn more about our rich, diverse cultures, the issues we currently face from gender, racism, sexuality, indigenous rights within the motherland, activism, our community, and to let the voices of our people be heard.

We will start accepting submissions for the second issue for September/October starting in July. So if you do want to write and submit something but don’t have time to submit today for the first issue, you have plenty of time to work and plan it for the second issue.

CALLING FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR THE LAUNCHING OF KAPWA MAGAZINE!

Kapwa is a new upcoming bi-monthly digital magazine by Pilipinx’s for Pilipinx’s touching up on our culture, health and beauty, our islands, social issues, and the lives and stories within the Pilipinx diaspora around the world.

My vision for the future is to give back to our people and provide them with a literary resource they can depend on to learn more about our rich, diverse cultures, the issues we currently face from gender, racism, sexuality, indigenous rights within the motherland, activism, our community, and to let the voices of our people be heard.

What does the word kapwa mean? Togetherness, shared identity, that you and I are one in the same and we share that spirit among one another. It is acknowledging our brothers and sisters as part of us and that we are connected by spirit. The word encompasses and represents what this magazine is all about.

I am looking for those who want to contribute and submit their stories whether it be immigration, adoption, being an OFW, the struggles in and out of the homeland, life lessons learned growing up as a Pilipinx, of gender and sexuality, etc., any cultural events they are hosting, any organizations and dance troupes that you are a part of, beauty tips, food recipes, your travels around the Philippines, any experiences with helping and contributing to our people whether its charitable organizations, fundraisers, or hands on work among the people.

I am also looking for a few dedicated and passionate people who would want to see and help this magazine grow and become a part of the official team. Whether if you love art and design and want to help in the design and look of the magazine, or if you love reading and writing and want to be either an editor or regular columnist. If you are a very outgoing person and have good communication skills especially in social media you can manage our facebook, instagram, pinterest, twitter, etc.

I am hoping to launch the first issue in July so throughout the month of June we will be working our butts off in bringing you something you will all love and enjoy reading.

I will personally be covering the NYC Philippine Independence Day Parade on Sunday, June 7 so if you are attending any other celebrations whether they are in the Philippines, NYC, Toronto, California, British Columbia, etc. feel free to submit your photos and any details and experiences from the celebrations. Whether it is attending the celebrations or you are performing with a dance troupe or musical act, etc. feel free to submit your photos.

I have been getting a lot of emails over the last week from those of you wanting to become an editor and sadly I can’t accept everyone as much as I would like to. I have selected only 3 people and I will be emailing them on their acceptance to the team. To everyone else if I don’t email you back this weekend that means the position has already been filled. In the future as the magazine picks up more I will more than likely accept a few more but as of right now we have enough. However I thank everyone who emailed and wanted to become a part of the team! It really means a lot that this magazine is getting tons of support and I can’t wait for the first issue to come out.

For those who didn’t become a part of the team there are still ways to help contribute such as submitting your stories, poems, articles, etc. If you participated in any PCN performances we are still accepting submissions and as many Philippines Independence Day celebrations are this weekend or within the next few days we will be acccepting those submissions as well.

Those of you who will be writing up an article or story for the first issue remember that the deadline is Saturday, June 13. I will be getting in touch with those who mentioned to me that they will be writing something for the first issue and follow up on their progress.

I am still looking for at least 2 designers to help design the pages of the magazine so if you are interested and have experience with graphic design or publishing such as from your schools magazine feel free to contact me at [email protected]. I am also looking for at least 1 photographer, possibly 2 who would like to volunteer to provide some photos that we may need, preferably someone in the Philippines. Note that this is unpaid work and completely volunteer as the magazine is just starting but hopefully down the road it will provide an internship or a paid job (and this applies for those who choose to be an editor or designer) once the magazine hits off but more details on that for those who are accepted will be discussed. I do have one photographer in mind who I love their work and they have been featured plenty of times on the Pinoy-Culture blog, who I will be contacting and see if they are interested but otherwise this position is free as of now. Again if you plan to apply please include examples or a portfolio of your work attached to the email.

Yes both are completely fine as long as they follow the guidelines above. If you aren’t able to finish writing your article by the end of this week that is quite alright as it can be sent for submission for the second issue which will be released in September. 

And of course not! You are still Pilipinx aren’t you not? :) Just because you are half, 1/3, one grandparent was Pilipinx, etc. you are still Pilipinx and it does not dilute your heritage in any way.

Hi! I was just wondering if there was a due date for the PCN photo submissions. I'm from Santa Clara University and I wanted to submit my PCN story, but I am also swamped with my schoolwork since the year's almost over lol so I don't have a lot of time to write a story right now, but I am interested in submitting.

Due date for written submissions are Saturday, June 13 however for pictures (for PCN and for the Philippines Independence Day Celebrations, as well as any other photos) the last day of submission is the 21st of June. I am willing to extend written submissions to be received on Sunday, June 14 but after that we have to start working on the magazine pages, editing, and publishing it online so the first issue can be released the first of July.

Kapwa Magazine is looking for submissions on your PCN to be featured in the first issue. Whether you were involved in one or you attended, feel free to submit your photos and share your stories, feelings, thoughts, personal growth, and experiences of PCN.

Guidelines:

Any photos submitted must be yours or your group have taken, not someone else’s.

Unlike the article submissions, this submission can be short in words if you choose to share your experiences and thoughts on PCN. A minimum of a short paragraph is fine or you can write more.

When submitting any photos or stories please include your name, the name of the organization, school, any focused themes for this year, and when and where the PCN took place, and any other information you would like to include.

One of the featured stories in the first issue for July/August will cover PCN events in the diaspora. PCN is a yearly performance performed by Pilipinx youth across different organizations and schools to celebrate our rich heritage, history, and our people. It is made up of our youth celebrating who they are through performances of theater, music, and dance, both modern and traditional. It is honoring where they and our ancestors come from and empowering themselves and our people through sharing their pride in their identity and culture to both Pilipinxs and non-Pilipinxs alike.

will you need artists for anything? im up for contributing

Yes that would be great actually, especially when I have a soft spot for Pilipinx artists. Well we have one main feature so far which is covering the Philippine Independence Day celebrations so perhaps we can have an illustration that can go along with the pages?

Also we do have our Arts & Music section so if you would like to contribute any artwork feel free to do so. I am planning to have a section for Pilipinx artists where we showcase their work and get them known.

As we get more submissions I’ll be asking Pilipinx artists if they would like to work on an illustration to go along with an article but that won’t be for awhile. But seeing as we already have that one feature on Philippine Independence Day celebrations feel free to submit something in regards to that.

CALLING FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR THE LAUNCHING OF KAPWA MAGAZINE!

Kapwa is a new upcoming bi-monthly digital magazine by Pilipinx’s for Pilipinx’s touching up on our culture, health and beauty, our islands, social issues, and the lives and stories within the Pilipinx diaspora around the world.

My vision for the future is to give back to our people and provide them with a literary resource they can depend on to learn more about our rich, diverse cultures, the issues we currently face from gender, racism, sexuality, indigenous rights within the motherland, activism, our community, and to let the voices of our people be heard.

What does the word kapwa mean? Togetherness, shared identity, that you and I are one in the same and we share that spirit among one another. It is acknowledging our brothers and sisters as part of us and that we are connected by spirit. The word encompasses and represents what this magazine is all about.

I am looking for those who want to contribute and submit their stories whether it be immigration, adoption, being an OFW, the struggles in and out of the homeland, life lessons learned growing up as a Pilipinx, of gender and sexuality, etc., any cultural events they are hosting, any organizations and dance troupes that you are a part of, beauty tips, food recipes, your travels around the Philippines, any experiences with helping and contributing to our people whether its charitable organizations, fundraisers, or hands on work among the people.

I am also looking for a few dedicated and passionate people who would want to see and help this magazine grow and become a part of the official team. Whether if you love art and design and want to help in the design and look of the magazine, or if you love reading and writing and want to be either an editor or regular columnist. If you are a very outgoing person and have good communication skills especially in social media you can manage our facebook, instagram, pinterest, twitter, etc.

I am hoping to launch the first issue in July so throughout the month of June we will be working our butts off in bringing you something you will all love and enjoy reading.

Update: 5/25/15

Deadline for any submissions will be on Saturday, June 13. This gives about 3 weeks for submissions to be received and looked at by our editors. The following 3 weeks will be used to design the pages on the magazine so that the first issue can be released on Wednesday, July 1.

If you plan to submit an article or story here are a few guidelines for submissions.

It must be a minimum length of one page (meaning one side of a double sided standard computer sheet of paper) using Times New Roman, 12 pt font, no double spacing. There is no maximum length for the article.

You can write about anything as long as it involves the Pilipinx diaspora and/or the Philippines and can be read by all ages. The following are the main sections on the magazine that will be featured: Community, Culture, Health & Beauty, Fashion, Travel, Arts & Music, and Home & Lifestyle. So say if you want to submit any creative stories or poems or artwork they will fall under Arts & Music. If it’s about food it will fall under Home & Lifestyle, personal stories under Community, and so on.

Any photos that go along with your submission, artwork, poems, creative stories, etc. submitted must be your own and not someone else.

All submissions must be sent to [email protected]. Included in the submission you must write down your name or preferred pen name if you do not want to put your real name down for privacy. You may also if you choose to do so write a short paragraph of your bio in third person, provide an author portrait, and a link to a personal blog, website, organization you belong to, etc. if you like but these are not required and are completely optional.

Any submissions past the deadline will still be accepted however so don’t feel discouraged if you don’t send them on time as they will be put up on the magazine website once it launches in July with the release of the first issue.

*** Also one of the main featured stories in the first issue will be covering Philippines Independence Day celebrations across the diaspora throughout the month of June. So if you will be attending one or you are involved in it feel free to submit your photos during the celebration and parades and talking a little bit about the event. I will personally be covering the NYC Philippine Independence Day Parade on Sunday, June 7 so if you are attending any other celebrations whether they are in the Philippines, NYC, Toronto, California, British Columbia, etc. feel free to submit your photos and any details and experiences from the celebrations. Whether it is attending the celebrations or you are performing with a dance troupe or musical act, etc. feel free to submit your photos.

Hi! First of all, I think this is a wonderful initiative and concept. I was wondering if you have any specific type of articles you're looking for. Because I'm from the Philippines, and we took this class called Sikolohiyang Pilipino (or Filipino Psychology) and a lot of the concepts are interesting to me as a psych major but I'm not sure if what you're looking for is leaning towards the academic. Also, which languages are we allowed to use? Is it English only or Filipino as well?

Thank you! Well the magazine won’t be just academic, it’s basically a lifestyle and cultural magazine that revolves around our people and the Philippines. So we will have some articles talking about aspects within our culture or history to stories from our people to beauty tips, talks on health, any current events that are going on within our communities, to sections on arts and music, etc. But basically the main sections of the magazine will be as follows: Community, Culture, Health & Beauty, Fashion, Travel, Arts & Music, and Home & Lifestyle.

I would actually love to have an article on Pilipinx psychology as though I have only briefly looked into it I am not all that familiar with it so I would personally love to read more about it and I know several others who would like to as well. This would fall under the category of Culture so by all means feel free to write something on that! :)

As for language I am very supportive of writers who plan to submit something to the magazine to write in their own native language. So say you are a Tagalog and want to write in Tagalog do it, or say if you are a Kapampangan and want to write your article in Kapampangan go for it! 

I strongly encourage those who want to freely write in their own language, especially those who speak another Philippine language to write their thoughts in their native tongue. Not only would it provide an outlet for those who want to speak their native tongue and to not just restrict it to Pilipino or Tagalog, but I feel it will let people in the diaspora to get to know and appreciate the beauty of the many languages of the Philippines. 

Of course since not everyone would be able to understand it if they don’t speak that specific language and not everyone understands or speaks Pilipino/Tagalog especially those outside the Philippines who weren’t raised to learn and speak any Philippine language, if you choose to do so you should also provide an English translation underneath each paragraph in parentheses.
