We used to know but we didn't act... ๐
Ibn al Qayyim ุฑูุญูู ู ุงูููู ุนููููููู said,
"A girl died of the plague and her father saw her in his dream. He said, 'my daughter, tell me about the hereafter. So she said, 'We've approached a serious matter. We used to know but we didn't act. I swear by Allah, to add one tasbeehah (saying Subhan Allah) or a single Rak'ah to my book of deeds is more beloved to me than the whole world and everything in it.'
This girl said words of great importance. 'We used to know but we didn't act', but many of us don't understand what she means.
We used to know, that if we say Subhan Allah wa bi Hamdihi 100 times our sins are forgiven even if they're like the foam of the sea (yet days and nights pass and we don't say it)
We used to know that two rak'ahs of Duha prayer is the equivalent of giving 360 charities (yet day after day pass and we don't pray it)
We used to know that a house in the middle of Jannah is guaranteed for one who abandons lying even while joking (yet every second sentence we utter is a lie)
We used to know that fasting a day voluntarily for the sake of Allah puts a distance between our face and the fire the size of seven trenches and Allah distances our face from the fire the distance travelled in 70 years, (and we haven't fasted single day this week)
We used to know that whoever visits a sick person is followed by 70,000 angels seeking Allah's forgiveness on his behalf (but we haven't visited a sick person this week)
We used to know that whoever prayed a funeral prayer and followed it till it was burried has two Qiraats of reward and a Qiraat is like the mountain of Uhud (yet weeks pass and we haven't been to the graveyard.)
We used to know that whoever builds a mosque even if it's like a bird's nest Allah builds a house for them in paradise (yet we haven't contributed to the building of a Masjid, even with 10 dinars)
We used to know that the one who supports the widow and her children is like the fighter in the path of Allah and the one who fasts all day and prays all night without sleeping. (Yet we haven't contributed to sponsoring a widow and her children)
We used to know that whoever reads a single letter from the Quran has a good deed and every deed is multiplied by 10. Yet we haven't made a point to read it every day.
We used to know that an accepted Hajj has the reward of jannah and it sends the person who completed it off like the day his mother gave birth to him. (With a clean book of deeds) yet we haven't performed the rites of Hajj although our circumstances have made it easy for us.
We knew the honor of a believer is in Qiyam Al-layl, and that the Prophet (pbuh) and his companions never missed it all their lives despite being busy with making a living and fighting in the path of Allah and spreading the religion. But we have neglected this matter terribly.
We knew the Day of Judgment was coming without a doubt and that Allah will resurrect us from our graves but we haven't prepared for that day.
We used to bury the deceased and pray over them but haven't prepared ourselves for a day like this one, as if we have a guarantee that it won't happen to us.
We know that every breath we breathe is getting us closer to death yet we're still busy with amusement and playing. It's time we change the way we're living and prepare properly for the day of accounting.
"On the Day a man will flee from his brother. And his mother and his father; And his wife and his children, For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him." Quran (80:34-37)

Reflections from Surah Yusuf:
1.ย ย Ask Allah, but leave the means to Himย
Even if things look like theyre going wrong on the outside after we makeย duaa.ย Allah is in control.ย We don't know the full story.ย We don't know what's happening behind the scenes. But all our failures along the way, allow us to growย into better forms of ourselves. The parts of your life that you wish you could erase areย all part of God's plan.ย They were written into your story before you ever existed. Through them, we realizeย Allah blessingsย over us - that He allows us to repent.
He could have taken the lives of Yusuf's brothers before they repented, but then that envy would still be in their hearts. And the Prophet warned us that envy burns good deeds like fire burns wood.ย But Allah allowed them to turn back.
If any mothers over hereย feel like their kids are lostย -ย Allah hears all yourย duaas!ย It might happen in a way that looks different than what you imagined.ย But one day, when you least expect it, they'll turn back too and you'll realize this is Allah keeping His promise.ย The road to submission, to islam, for yusuf's brothers looked very different
from that of yusuf. But in the end, Allah gave Yaqoub what he wanted -ย
That all his sons die as muslimeen.
2. Ask but don't rush.ย Be patient
ย Trust that it'll happen when it's meant to happen.ย As much as Yusuf wanted to go out in search of his family, Allah actually forbade him from doing so. To us, that may sound weird or cruel, but if we think about what happened in hindsight, and what could have happened to Yusuf if he turned back, it makes a lot of sense.ย
We would all wish to wait if we realized how much harm there was in getting ourย duaasย answered early!ย
In the case of Yusuf,ย instead of justย reuniting him with his father, by waiting,ย Allah also designed his Qadrย in a way where He could cureย the evil in his brothers' hearts,ย and reunite Yusuf withย themย as well.ย
Sometimes we forget that our qadrย will always be tied with those around us.ย Reuniting with Yaqubย was certainly Yusuf's biggest desire,ย but in waiting,ย Yusuf was able to uniteย with his whole family.
If he had just found a way to go back 40 years early, the brothers could have killed Yusuf (considering they wanted to do that initially!), or simply denied it and said he was lying. They had power over him.ย
But look at how Allah designed his qadr.ย ย Remember the brothersย didn't initially knowย the Azizย was their brother.ย They walked into Yusuf's court, there was the whole planย with the golden cup and binyamin being taken -ย Allah specifically writes in the Quranย that "Yusuf would not haveย been able to take Benyaminย in Egypt the way he didย except that Allah allowed it happen.ย We raise in power whomever we will.ย And aboveย everyย person of knowledge, is the One who is Most Knowing."ย In that, Yusuf's brothers witnessed Yusuf with power, and themselves powerless, and saw Allah's hand in that. And then THEY were the ones who had to confess to Yaqoub about what they did. Furthermore, if he had gone back, their hatred may only have increased, and who knows to what extent this envy would have caused them to commit sins.ย
3. Ask the impossible of the Lord of the Impossible!
When he was trapped with the Aziz's wife, Yusuf probably thought there was only jail or falling into the sin. So naturally, he asked Allah for jail. But when he later told Allah, "You left me in jail for a really long time ya Allah (40 years!)" Allah replied, "o Yusuf I only gave you what you asked, and had you asked to be saved from jail and the Aziz's wife, I'd have saved you."ย
Yusuf probably didn't realize that he was actually limiting himself by asking Allah for jail. Because as humans, our knowledge is limited. Sometimes we don't fully internalize what it means to say Allah has power over everything, and all that's impossible becomes possible with Him. But to demonstrate the miracles Allah performs when we call on Him with full yaqeen, there's a narration (authenticity is unknown but it's powerful nontheless!) that goes:ย
Yaqoub was crying in sujood one day over the loss of benyamin and because it triggered all his grief over yusuf. Soย he called out:
Oh Allah, will you not have mercy
Over my weakness
ย will you not have mercy
Over my gray hair
will you not have mercy
Over my old age
will you not have mercy
Over my humiliation
will you not have mercy
Over how in need I am of you
And the amount of yaqeen heย had was so powerful that Allah replied:
By My honor and My majesty
By My power over My servants
And My position above My throne
If Yusuf was dead
I'd have brought him back to life for you
So subhan'Allahย always ask the impossible of Allah, for this "impossible" thing is completely at His command! When He says "be" it simply "is"!
Just make duaa, strive towards it and work hard, and inshaAllah it will be yours!
Umar radiallahu said: Iย just makeย duaa, I'm not worried about the answer.ย Because I know that if Allah guided me to make the duaa, then the answer will come with it.

Some examples of good conduct and love between The Prophet๏ทบ and his wives.
He โุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุณูู would never hit his wives.
He would let things slide by not picking/addressing every little mistake.
He would play and joke around with them.
He would help them whenever they required help.
He would give them nicknames e.g he used to call Aaโisha โุฑุถู ุงููู ุนููุง โO Aaโishโ or โHumayraโ which signifies something that is small and red.
He would drink from the exact same part of the vessel from where his wife would drink from.
He would spend on them.
He would do things on their behalf even after their death like when he sacrificed an animal and gave some of the meat to Khadijaโs โุฑุถู ุงููู ุนููุง friends.
When Aโaโisha โุฑุถู ุงููู ุนููุง was on her menstrual cycle, he would lean against her and recite Qurโaan while they both rested.

What a PhD is and what it is not?
By: Prof.ย Jamal Hisham Hashim
After having completed a PhD degree myself, and having supervised, co-supervised and examined a number of PhD students over the years, I would like to offer some humble advice and pointers to those aspiring to pursue a PhD degree themselves. I find that many students misunderstood the purpose of getting a PhD degree and the commitments and sacrifices that it calls for.
A PhD is the highest academic and research degree from a university. I have seen both remarkable successes and disappointing failures amongst students pursuing this academic accolade. It takes more than just brain power to complete a PhD.
A degree by research is very different from a degree by coursework. A course degree whether at the undergraduate or masters level is heavily structured. A student just have to be disciplined and rigorous in following this predetermined structure regimentally, without much creativity required from him or her. Of course, creativity is demanded from the student in completing assignments and projects but the demand is nothing close to what is required for a PhD degree.
The most important prerequisites for pursuing a successful PhD program are passion, inquisitiveness, creativity, discipline, persistence, perseverance and meticulousness (or attention to detail). I did not mention intelligence not because it is not important, but because it is less important than the other attributes I mentioned. At least, it is in my book. Others may feel differently.
Of those many attributes, I consider passion the most important. Some students start out enthusiastically but loses steam halfway through or towards the end. They lack passion or the love of knowledge. Ever heard of the saying, โwhen the going gets tough, the tough gets going?โ Success in a PhD is simply that. The harder it becomes, the harder you will strive. Sometimes, you do not see the light at the end of the tunnel but you still keep looking for it because you know it is there. When you love what you do, failure is not an option.
Some people do PhD for the wrong reasons. Some take up postgraduate because they could not secure a job after their first or second degree. Some do it because the jobs they have taken up require them to acquire a PhD, for e.g. an academic or a research post. These cannot be the sole reason for pursuing a PhD. You cannot force yourself to do a PhD. You must want to do it badly enough. You cannot force yourself to love something; you must love or want something bad enough to force yourself to get it.
The PhD is an academic journey. There will be failures but mainly successes along your way. You may encounter some foes but mainly friends in the same boat as yourself. It always help to be in a group of students to share both your setbacks and achievements. Working alone in a silo is the worst you can do to yourself. There are certain things you want to discuss with your fellow students that you cannot discuss with your supervisor; matters that are either academic or personal.
Your supervisor is your mentor, guide and consultant, not your teacher. He cannot teach you your PhD knowledge, you have to teach yourself through his guidance and wisdom. He is more your friend than he is your master. He does not dictate to you what you must do, he merely points you in the right direction. At the end of your PhD journey, you would have been more knowledgeable on the subject of your research than your supervisor. I have heard of students not being able to complete their PhD because they could not get along or see eye to eye with their supervisor. This is the worst scenario that can happen to you. If you do not have a supervisor you can work with, you will not get your PhD no matter how good you are or how hard you work. So, choose your supervisor well, not just the university you want to do your PhD in. Just a few months back, I met a doctoral graduate who told me that to be supervised by this one professor carries more prestige among his peers in the working world.
A PhD degree needs sacrifices, especially when you are a family person; a wife, mother, husband or dad. Family is always important and should always be your priority. However, you and your family members must be willing to make sacrifices that are necessary. There can be no gain without pain. That is why when you finally get your PhD degree, your family members can even be happier and more proud of you than you yourself, because it is as much their accomplishment as it is yours. Their sacrifices must be duly appreciated.
So what does it mean when you have a Dr. before your name? Does it mean that you are an expert on a certain subject matter? Hardly so, I think. It means that you are both a seeker as well as a generator of knowledge. It means that you have enriched the world and added on to the vast body of knowledge through your PhD contribution. The world has become a slightly better place from the knowledge that you have contributed through your PhD thesis and publications. The world now knows more on a subject than before you completed your PhD. Your work get referred and cited by other researchers in your field, as they absorb your new knowledge to generate new knowledge of their own.
Your PhD is an end that should be justified by its means. The research methodology, the analysis and the interpretation should justify the conclusion. The new knowledge must have been tested and challenged by your peers and rigorously defended by you. It is an accomplishment unequal by any other feat. Once you have obtained a well-deserved PhD degree, you become your own teacher as self-teaching becomes common practice. You are always curious and tends to read a lot, not just on your subject matter but on everything. You will find doing new things, exploring new frontiers and taking up new challenges more scintillating. In other words, it will change your life and your outlooks forever.
I hope I have inspired some of you to pursue a PhD degree if what you read here is what you really want from a PhD. On the other hand, I hope I have also discouraged others who have a misconception of what a PhD degree entails, so that you will not go down the road of failure. A PhD is not for everyone.

A beautiful read, that will boost your Iman.
"The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) told us to read Surah Kahf on Fridays, and on some Fridays, you breeze through it. It doesnโt seem to relate. You read it and vaguely remember the stories. You get the big picture, and just like that, you move on. Itโs Friday after all. You have plans after work, or are excited for the weekend.
But there will be Fridays where you need Kahf. Because it will hit you.
There is a part in Surah Kahf where Khidr is destroying a boat. Utterly destroying it. Breaking it apart. And this boat belongs to a group of poor individuals. People who are just getting by and need this boat for their livelihood, to fish and to travel, perhaps even to live in it.
Musa AS asks Khidr โ why? How on earth does that make sense?
Imagine that you are that poor person, with a boat. And it is destroyed. And you wonder to Allah โ why? I am in need of this promotion, this grade, this job, this home, this spouse. I am in need of this dua being answered โ and I do not have a silver spoon. How can you destroy my boat Allah? MY BOAT.
Why not destroy the boats of the ungrateful, the boats of those out drinking and partying and not once caring about your existence ya Allah. Why did you destroy my boat, my weak little boat, that carried my dreams. Why is it shattered? Did I not take care of it enough? Did I not worship you enough? Did I not wake up for fajr? Did I not do my fasts?
But the story is that there was an evil King coming โ and if the boat was intact, the King would take the boat from these poor people and the people will not have a means of sustenance anymore. But a broken boat โ Allah knows that the poor people can fix and once again be okay, and the King would not be interested.
So your boat broke, but Allah knows He will help you fix it. He will help you find a way. But He knows a bigger picture, and something bigger He is protecting you from.
It doesnโt make sense to you right now. You cannot see the evil King, you cannot see what Allah protected you from. All you can see is your hard work in front of you โ broken. All you can see is the effort it will take to move forward, to move on from this calamity.
So, if the one you wanted to marry was taken away from you โ know that itโs because Allah knows what would have happened years down the line, and it maybe wasnโt the right person or the right time.
If the grades didnโt happen the way you wished โ know that it may be Allah protecting your imaan. That the grade wouldโve lead you to a place, a program or a graduate school where your imaan would fall and you wouldnโt have enough support to get back up.
If the job didnโt happen then maybe that job wouldโve lead you into a person you werenโt meant to become. Maybe it wouldโve deterred you from your family needs and maybe in a month or two, thereโs a job literally designed for you that will enable you to pray your sunnahs with ease and give you more barakat. And after that, another job, with more benefits.
Look beyond the destroyed boat.
Remember that you did make dua, that you did put in effort, and that you are loved by Allah and just as a child does not understand why his mother wonโt let him have the sugary drink at 6AM โ Allah loves you more than that mother. Allah loves, and Allah knows.
Try fixing the boat, or look another way -- for another door.
You are capable of passing the broken boat test.
You have the sabr: the patience is within you. Allah wouldnโt put you through it if you werenโt capable.
