Gaztelugatxe is a tiny, 900s CE hermitage. In Basque it is known as Gaztelugatxeko Doniene. The hermitage is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. Perched 500 feet high, it sits atop a small islet on the bay of Biscay, and reached only via a narrow causeway over a stone bridge, then up more than 200 steps which zig-zag up the islet. Gaztelugatxe’s remote location, jutting out into the waters, has made it a center of pilgrimage for sailors and those who have survived the sea.
