An Examination of the 2010 FBI Hate Crime Stats by bias

Every year the FBI releases Hate Crime Statistics detailing the number of reported hate crimes by type of crime, type of bias motivation and type of victim.

The first graph shows the percent of hate crimes reported by types of bias motivation.

As you can see, anti-race motivation hate crimes are still the most common hate crimes reported, though anti-religion and anti-sexual orientation also have high rates.

The second two graphs are a more in-depth look at the different anti-sexual motivation biases.

Here’s what you need to realise about anti-racism: It’s not about you. It’s not about your feelings as a white person. What you just said is that you’ll entertain the idea of listening to POC talk about ways they’ve been fucked over by whiteness, white privilege, and white people as long as they don’t hurt your feelings. To put it another way: you’re saying that not having your feelings hurt is more important to you than actually trying to understand PoC’s experiences of enduring racism—which is, itself, perpetuating racism. No, maybe you didn’t partake in whatever act of racism we’re talking about in this very moment, but if you’re white, then you are benefiting from the systemic racism that allowed it to happen, whether you like it or not. Yes, listening to the ways that your privilege fucks over other people is uncomfortable. Yes, it can be embarrassing & lead to feelings of guilt, but it is not up to People of Color to censor ourselves to spare your delicate fee-fees. If you truly want to be considered anti-racist, you need to deal with those feelings with other white people & not add to the burden of PoC’s experiences of racism by saying that you won’t take us seriously unless we’re ‘nice’ about the emotional & psychological violence that we endure simply by being PoC in a racist society. So literally, all I want you to do is understand that being anti-oppression (of any kind) is about understanding how the oppressed group is affected & then countering those systems, activities, mindsets, etc. It’s not about you being comfortable, because if you’re doing it right, it’s not going to be comfortable.

Since the movement began on September 17 Occupy Wall Street has drawn criticism for not articulating specific enough complaints. But really it’s not that hard to figure out. At the risk of sounding like I’m speaking for the movement, the basic complaint is unfairness. A system that lets financial institutions run wild without any rules, collects taxpayer money to save themselves when things go terribly wrong, and then continues to make record profits as those same taxpayers fall into plight, ignoring their needs for personal and small-business loans, is simply unfair.

Zombie Virus Drives Caterpillars To An Explosive Death

Scientists recently discovered something that was causing European gypsy moth caterpillars to behave very strangely. The caterpillars were infected by a deadly baculovirus, and with their last bits of strength, they did something that would be out of the question if they were healthy: they climbed out onto the very highest leaves of their tree in the middle of the day.

There, their diseased bodies split open, raining infected caterpillar guts onto the leaves and branches below. The death ritual is so bizarre, that scientists started using the term ”tree top disease” to describe the virus that caused it.

In a recent issue of Science magazine, researchers reveal the cause of this odd final act: a specific viral gene that drives infected caterpillars to die in a way that offers the best potential for spreading the virus that killed it…just like a zombie (ScienceDaily).

The virus “ends up using just about all of the caterpillar to make more virus, and there are other genes in the virus that then make the caterpillar melt. So it becomes a pool of millions of virus particles that end up dropping onto the foliage below where it can infect other moths that eat those leaves,” study co-author Kelli Hoover told National Geographic.
