Setting goals, even when life is uncertain
Life is so unpredictable! We don’t know what the next day is going to bring! let alone next year, I do have a set of New Years resolutions for next year, but they are all goals I have been trying to achieve I am just giving myself this opportunity to really reflect about my past year. 2013 has been an incredible year for me I was able to achieve several goals including graduating from NMSU with a BS, Going on my first mission trip, and leaving the Country ( those 2 are together I went to Honduras) , a few health goals and more! There are always challenges but it sure feels good crossing goals off of your list! I just want to share a few tips that I find helpful when deciding my goals
-Start small; this is different for everybody some people it may be walk a mile, or stop eating processed food. One of my goals is to be able to do a headstand without help! Another is to compete in a 5k!( February !!!!! http://pages.teamintraining.org/al/mercedes14/katierose)
- make them measurable – A common goal is to “lose weight” well how much? by when? is it manageable? This is very important in being able to follow through and assess improvement.
- just try to be better than yourself every day. We all make mistakes! Believe me I have had my share of plenty, probably made several today! We just need to face our issues and work on those! Mistakes are opportunities to learn, use them!
- share your goals- Share your goals with your friends and family. That shows them you are really serious and they may be able to help you!
- create a support group- Support groups can be a vital part in reaching your goals, and motivating you to excel. It is important to surround yourself with like minded people, if you are friends with successful active people then you are way more likely to do that, because you have a great example in front of you! So go ahead go out and meet new people! ask questions , find a mentor!
- Don’t be too hard on yourself- Like I said earlier we all make mistakes! It happened, get over it, move ahead and learn from it! Continue trying it is just a little set back but do not continue to demonstrate the same behavior.
- make enjoyable goals! Life is meant to be enjoyed. Set some fun goals that you can’t wait to achieve like going surfing, or traveling to Japan, create memorable life experiences that we can truly appreciate, learn from and enjoy!
Now like I said New Years is a great time to reflect and set goals but this can be done all the time! Goal setting should be looked at often and reevaluated. Think abut how you can better yourself each day, each month, each year, and so on! Goals can be very broad or very detailed. Depends on who is making them and what steps are necessary to achieve them; some people like list, vision boards, some people just know , some are so passionate they put all the energy they have into solving this goal! But sometimes it can be hard enough just getting through the day! At that point just think about what your body needs to thrive. Think about what would truly make you happy? What have you always wanted to do? What will help you grow as a person?
I hope this helps! Feel free to comment if you have questions, comments, or tips that you feel like could help someone! Have an amazing 2014!
