My Christmas tips 2: a stress free Christmas lunch. 2011.11.18
Like many of you out there, I do find Christmas lunch a little bit stressful. Pleasing everyone is impossible and there is just so much to do!
I have hosted Christmas lunch at our house on many occasions so I have picked up some handy tips along the way that you might find useful. If you have any tips of your own, please share them!
Get started by writing down who is coming to your lunch.
Try to estimate how much people will eat (overestimating this is usually the best idea) and then write a shopping list.
When you have decided on what meat you are going to have - order it!
To reduce the overall cost, allocate each guest to bring one item (this is also a very good way for you to reduce the stress of preparing a Christmas meal).
Once you have your shopping list, make sure to buy all non-perishables as early as you can.
Try online shopping it is a very stress-free and easy process. Though make sure you book your delivery on time for the big event.
Try to get any last bits before Christmas eve - supermarkets and shops are always a night mare on this day!
Decide what time you want to serve your food and then work backwards to plan a schedule of when things need to be started.
Assign each guest with a job to do for the Christmas lunch. Let children join in, they can set and decorate tables and do some of the food preparation just as well as adults!
if you would rather put your feet up for Christmas, why not book a table at a restaurant? Its a great way to spend a relaxing Christmas without any dishes! Although you will need to book early as restaurants do get booked up early.
Whatever your plans, why not send all of your guests a Christmas ecard lunch invitation?

Katie's Christmas tips: Present buying. 2011.11.16
Like many of you, I am extremely busy on the lead up to Christmas. Christmas parties, Christmas plays and other Christmas-related-events take up a lot of time and that is not to mention the fact that Christmas is actually the busiest time of the year for Katie's Cards! Therefore it is essential for me to plan our Christmas early. I have picked up quite a few useful tips over the years so I thought I would share them with you. Please share any additional tips you have with me!
I will add some different tips each day for every part of the planning. Today I am looking at buying gifts:
Many people overspend on the lead up to Christmas. I have done it many times. Its very easily done especially if you are rushing! Here are some helpful things that you can do to plan your present buying so that you don't spend too much money or waste time and so that you can get it all done before the big day:
I usually work out what I have to spend on presents for people in early November.
I make a list of everyone I need to buy gifts for and add any present ideas that I have onto the list as I go.
I assign an amount of money I am willing to spend for each person on the list. I then add up all the money to make sure that it isn't over what I have to spend. I This helps me to make sure I can afford what I have planned and if I can't, I edit the list and remove anyone who shouldn't be there and reduce the cost for some on the list until the total matches what I have to spend.
I set myself a deadline for all presents. I stop ordering gifts online 3 weeks before Christmas (I had an incident a few years ago when my order didn't arrive until after Christmas) and traditional shopping 1 week before.
As soon as I can, I go online and try to find special vouchers or deals that I can use to buy my gifts. Here are some great websites offering discount vouchers that you can use: Groupon, Discountvouchers.co.uk, moneysavingexpert.com, myvouchercodes.co.uk, couponcodes4u.com, myvouchercodes.com, couponcodeusa.com, latestdiscountvouchers.com. I then browse online shops, a great place to start is Amazon.
I try to plan my first shopping trip soon after completing my list and try to plan which shops I need to visit so I can get round them quickly. Remember to take any discount vouchers that you need and if you have a smart phone, try using the 'Facebook places' app once you have reached your shopping destination as you can find lots of special deals linked to specific shops just by checking in and they are usually not promoted anywhere else on the internet!
I try to pop into shops such as Boots who offer some great 3 for 2's around Chritsmas time.
I make sure to tick off the people I have bought presents for and keep a rolling tally of what I have actually spent.
Thankfully you don't have to be anywhere near as organised to send your Christmas e cards, as you can have them delivered instantly!
