My boyfriend the type of dude that carries my inhaler around for me, orders my caesars and reassures me that he still loves me at 4am after I push him away cause I had a bad dream. I will always roll my eyes when he jokes that I’M blessed but I can never argue. I love him so much.
A late post of my 2016 1SE! 2016 was an amazing year for me. I had the opportunity to take part in an exchange semester which allowed me to live my dream and travel - at least for a little while. I was able to meet new people, make lifetime friends, visit places I could have only imagined and make my mark in SE Asia! Honestly, an opportunity I would take over and over again with no regrets. As cliche as it is, I truly learned so much about myself as well as the places and cultures I found myself appreciating. From 2016 I will never, ever forget: - Being thrown my first surprise (going away) party, thanks to Astrid and Rox! - Getting trapped in the Guangzhou airport and not being allowed to leave with Nicole. - Penang, Malaysia where I called home for 5 months. - The friends I made at USM: Scooter Gang, the million group chats, planning out of country trips the day before, the food. - Oh my God, the food. My taste buds are forever changed into liking spicy foods. Red Garden for mango sticky rice or Super Tanker for our sushi guy and pancakes. Our Thai place, benny place, or Indian place. I'm actually so shook writing about this. - Staying above a club in KL, a literal meaning of partying to sleep. - Seeing a Mama turtle lay eggs on the beach at the Perhentians. - Participating in the most sketchy exchange to see a Ping Pong show in Bangkok. - Visiting my family in the Philippines. - The sand bar and the perfect sunset in Koh Lipe. - Getting asked out by my boyfriend in Disney, Hong Kong. - Having the most emotional, yet amazing ass time in Singapore and finding the tallest rooftop club with the world's best view. - Elephants and first time surfing in Bali. Also, the $30 über. - Taking the bus from Cambodia to Vietnam. - Getting lost and I mean SO lost in Tokyo. - Coming back to my family and my friends and my boyfriend. - Crabbing with my family in Seattle. - The hilarious ass time we had at the Ghost tour in Portland. - Kanye West with the Fantastic Four. - I finally got to go to zoo light (so I know he da one, hehe) - A very lit Christmas of 2016. Honestly, one can only hope that 2017 could even compare but I'm SO grateful for all my blessings and the experiences I've had. 💖
A lot of people ask me what my biggest fear is, or what scares me most. And I know they expect an answer like heights, or closed spaces, or people dressed like animals, but how do I tell them that when I was 17 I took a class called Relationships For Life and I learned that most people fall out of love for the same reasons they fell in it. That their lover’s once endearing stubbornness has now become refusal to compromise and their one track mind is now immaturity and their bad habits that you once adored is now money down the drain. Their spontaneity becomes reckless and irresponsible and their feet up on your dash is no longer sexy, just another distraction in your busy life. Nothing saddens and scares me like the thought that I can become ugly to someone who once thought all the stars were in my eyes.

I never expected this to be my most popular poem out of the hundreds I’ve written. I was extremely bitter and sad when I wrote this and I left out the most beautiful part of that class.
After my teacher introduced us to this theory, she asked us, “is love a feeling? Or is it a choice?” We were all a bunch of teenagers. Naturally we said it was a feeling. She said that if we clung to that belief, we’d never have a lasting relationship of any sort.
She made us interview a dozen adults who were or had been married and we asked them about their marriages and why it lasted or why it failed. At the end, I asked every single person if love was an emotion or a choice.
Everybody said that it was a choice. It was a conscious commitment. It was something you choose to make work every day with a person who has chosen the same thing. They all said that at one point in their marriage, the “feeling of love” had vanished or faded and they weren’t happy. They said feelings are always changing and you cannot build something that will last on such a shaky foundation.
The married ones said that when things were bad, they chose to open the communication, chose to identify what broke and how to fix it, and chose to recreate something worth falling in love with.
The divorced ones said they chose to walk away.
Ever since that class, since that project, I never looked at relationships the same way. I understood why arranged marriages were successful. I discovered the difference in feelings and commitments. I’ve never gone for the person who makes my heart flutter or my head spin. I’ve chosen the people who were committed to choosing me, dedicated to finding something to adore even on the ugliest days.
I no longer fear the day someone who swore I was their universe can no longer see the stars in my eyes as long as they still choose to look until they find them again.

Accept the fact that you will grow apart from people you’ve had significant relationships with. Understand when someone no longer positively affects your life. Let them go. Don’t hinder your growth.
How did I go from being so high up to feeling like crap about every single aspect of my life 😪
SO FAR.
Been studying and chilin at random cafe’s all day and... I still can’t believe I went through with this exchange. It’s already been two months since I flew halfway across the world from everything that was safe and familiar, and it’s already been so amazing. This is probably going to be one of the craziest learning experiences I’ll have and although it gets hard sometimes - it’s been WAY worth it!
2015 1SE!!!
It's funny watching these and you can literally see/tell when things start changing... This has been such a crazy and unexpected year, so a big shout out to all the people who were apart of it and spent time with me! It's been the best year and I honestly couldn't ask for anything/ anyone else that I would have rather spent 2015 with.
This is my second year doing 1SE and it just keeps getting better. 2016 is just beginning and I can already tell it's going to be amazing... OFFICIALLY booked my flight for next month and I'm both equally as stoked and terrified that I'm going to be living in a different country with strangers for months. Obviously stoked for all the travel oppportunities I'm going to have, and terrified because of how much I am going to miss home.. And my dog. I've been so blessed this last year and it's both weird and annoying that people just seem to walk into my life during the worst times. I'm not complaining though cause I honestly don't know how I get so lucky... But here's to me chasing dreams in 2016 🙏🏻💖
