Eleven months and change. From awkward sex and sweaty bare legs on cheap leather couches in the sticky end of summer to red wine and double dates passing a comfortable cotton fall. From cold winter nights welcomed by warm hands, musty radiator smells masked by coconut candle wax and spiked apple cider to new years kisses and goofy dog slobber on clean sheets. From emotionless “I love you’s” to drunk kisses and pretending to fall asleep to avoid going all the way. From silent tears to undefinable loneliness, wide awake in that underground room, reaching out to a faceless figure, trying with all of me to reshape this physical presence into something that maybe could pass for love.

 From endless empty wine bottles to questions far too uncomfortable to actually ask out loud. Just thinking them and thinking them and thinking them on repeat on repeat as if maybe if I thought them loud enough you would answer me with your eyes. To postponing physical loneliness for one more stamp of approval, one more picture, one more try. Because maybe if I could make them see that we were happy and in love then maybe I would see it for myself. I wanted it so fucking badly. I swear I remember being happy even if the evidence isn’t substantial enough to support the claim.

 I wasn’t brave enough to put words to what I knew from the beginning. I’m sorry I pretended not to notice and I’m sorry I couldn’t stop it from getting bigger and bigger and bigger but I’m not sorry for hoping that the spring sunshine would make it all go away. My sunshine came but what I didn’t know was that while I was planting seeds and praying for flowers you were asking for storm clouds and earthquakes and brain tumors because only disaster could excuse the escape you had planned.
