Just watched twinless and I can’t stop thinking about it. I feel like everyone is talking ab the sex which, valid because I went into it blind and was not prepared at all. But!! Like first can we talk about how incredibly amazing the actors were. I mean it is Dylan O’Brian but god I forgot how stunning of an actor he is, it’s been so long. Literally the last time I watched him was as a teenager (will forever have a soft spot for Stiles and TW) And James Sweeney directing and acting and producing all at the same time??!? And then everything else oh my god!:!!:
It was just so mind blowing for me just to see the film spiral the way it did. One thing about me is I love a good queer codependency plot. Combine that with awkward gay, and morally ambiguous gay, lying, and mental breakdowns, I just felt so seen. I also love to also see the spectrums of gay. It’s so fun watching how each character behaves.
I adoreed Sweeney’s character, Dennis especially. He’s weird and there’s something seriously wrong with him and that’s what I love about him. Roman too, he’s a bit harder for me to understand personally but he’s so compelling. He’s blindly naive to Dennis’s purposeful deceit. I think the relationship between him and Roman is so complex and dynamic. They are both very messed up individuals. They cannot live without another person, each carrying that mindset in a different way.
Roman has no sense of identity outside his twin identity and Dennis has no sense of identity outside whatever he fixates on. It’s why they work so well and hit it off in the beginning. Dennis is able to give Roman that relationship he needs. Even after the truth comes out, we see Roman still craves that connection. I absolutely loved the ending because it’s very ambiguous and I feel open to interpretation.
I don’t think that Dennis can be truly happy with Marcie, I think she gives him a sense of satisfaction and security and I don’t doubt that they don’t love eachother, but Roman isn’t functional in a normal relationship. He intrinsically craves codependency. Dennis craves it as well, he doesn’t know who he is without it. In my head while, I can’t picture them to be romantic or even sexual but their relationship is still so intimate.
To have someone understand you and see you and know your ugly and your lies and still want to talk to you and to be with you always, but not like, “oh I want to be in a relationship with you”, but in the sense that I need you to come with me anywhere and everywhere I go because I don’t know how to be without you, in that sense.
They aren’t good for each other but why does that matter? I think that’s what the film was pointing to at the end. How they might not have been friends under different circumstances but the events that played out and their intrinsic nature connects them fully.
So while it’s not healthy or realistic but they’re both such messed up individuals they work so well together. They can see one another in a way no one else is able to. That’s something we all strive towards, and to see it displayed so clearly in this film I felt a pit in my stomach.
I don’t know what I expected going into it but it definitely wasn’t this. I’m exhausted and my thoughts are all over the place rn but I just needed to get this out. I loved this movie and I know it has its faults but who cares it made me want to throw up and peel my skin off and crawl inside in a good way.
