Closing Post
I really enjoyed this year in English class. I could've done without the Tumblr and busy work but overall it was beneficial. We read some questionable stories in the beginning and I don't think I learned a whole lot from Grendel and all of those stupid stories. The second semester really shaped me as a writer because I got to practice my response skills every week. Some of the things we did were a waste of time but the big things like reading 1984 and Hamlet really got me ready for college. I'm also glad that I finally figured out how to work Tumblr and I also realized that group projects are not for me. I work best on my own and I think the Tumblr really reflected the good work that we can do, not just the test scores that we can fake. Thanks for everything this year Mr. Z, I really appreciate it!
STRAW INTO GOLD Week 8 Assessment
1. I think that my parents have been preparing me to be a strong, independent woman. Life has been preparing me to work hard and to enjoy the little things because one day they could be gone.
2. What I thought was impossible was putting an end to the old things that I did an evolving into the more grown up and responsible person that I am.
3. Nursing school and becoming a nurse sounds impossible right now because that career path is so impacted these days.
4. I was really angry freshman year when I didn't make the softball varsity team. How could I have worked so hard to not have it work out? I ended up making it sophomore year because I worked even harder. Sometimes things don't work out for a reason and the experiences that we learn during those hard times can be even more beneficial than what you were working toward.
5. I think that our high school experience shapes us for the person that we will eventually be. What you do matters because everyone wants to be assured that they have made a difference. No, I haven't done anything important yet but I'm just getting started.
6. Whats next is college, followed by nursing school and then eventually finding a new job.
7. Maybe, I have no idea what the future holds for myself but I hope that I'm happy and content in my life.
THE MIRROR Week 7 Assessment
1. The narrator faces his fears by taking them head on. He still gets out of bed even when everything feels wrong. That's how we should take life; head on. He may be scared but he still goes through his assignment like nothing is wrong.
2. I used to ignore anything that scared me and I would just pretend like the problem wasn't there. I've just recently started facing my problems head on because the hardest step is the first one and after that it gets easier.
3. I was scared that I wouldn't fit in or find new friends when first starting high school. I was scared that classes would be too hard and that I wouldn't make the softball team. Those fears were so frivolous looking back because now I'm worried about things that affect my entire life not just 4 years.
4. Now that high school is coming to an end my scared that I'll mess up and screw up all of the good things that are happening to me. My personality is just to worry and over think things and that gets me in trouble sometimes because I have a hard time living in the moment. I'm worried that everything that I envision going right in my life will go horribly wrong. I don't like how I always assume that I'm going to mess stuff up because so far I've done a pretty good job with my life.
STRAYS Week 7 Assessment
1. Uncle Trash- a drunk, selfish, "white trash," greedy
Narrator- loyal, main caregiver, young, confused, a stray
Mom- mentally ill, poor, dead beat parent
2. The story reveals their traits by describing all the times Uncle Trash got wasted and did dumb things like getting in a fight. He's selfish because he disappears and doesn't watch the kids and he takes all of their clothes and toys during their game. " White Trash" because he is poor, drinks too much and just overall matches the description of a podunk small town drunk. Greedy because he takes the kids' things and steals anything he can get his hands while gambling. The narrator is loyal because he stays with his brother no matter what. He is the main caregiver because he is the oldest and everyone in his family has left. He is both young and confused because he doesn't get why everyone has left or why the strays come under the house at night. He himself is a stray because his owners have abandoned him just like the dogs. The mom is obviously mentally ill and can't take care of the boys any longer. She is poor and a dead beat parent because she leaves her kids all alone and only leaves them a house to live in.
3. “ Don't burn the house down," this is important because it foreshadows the kids actually burning the house down. It also shows that the house is really the only thing that Uncle Trash cares about because he just leaves the kids by themselves.
4. Emotional poverty can be as stressful as poverty
In the end we are strays hopelessly wondering the earth
It is hard to find differences between abandoned children and stray dogs
5. The story is literally about abandoned brothers trying to live with their Uncle Trash and they listen to stray dogs walk under their house at night. It is figuratively about emotionally and physically poor children who have the same parental problems as stray dogs. It is thematically about the emotional problems that not belonging to anyone brings.
Week 6 Assessment
1. I really enjoyed Invisible Man and I plan to finish this book one of these days. I like how Ellison addresses many of the social and racial discrimination surrounding African-Americans. I also like how they address the two different types of personalities; the person who considers themselves socially invisible and the person who will pay to witness something that they can't do them self. I really enjoyed Mr. Arnold coming into our class and making us question the lessons that we have been taught our entire life. He made me question if education was an enlightening or made to keep us ignorant. I personally think that it is both because they teacher pushes their beliefs on us all the time but I would be nowhere in my life if I didn't learn key education such as math and english. Mr. Arnold should seriously consider going back to teaching AP English because he was not only engaging but he made me question things that I have never considered.
2. a) The veil on education has been lifted from my eyes because I now view people's opinions and teachings different. Take each lesson you learn with a grain of salt because although their viewpoint might not match yours, you can still benefit from the beliefs of others. Education is not meant to be one-sided but rather multi-dimensional. People contribute their ideas and own experiences to the teaching that others have passed down to them.
b) The veil has been lowered on me all throughout my schooling. Teachers put their opinions on you instead of guiding you to express you own feelings. We have due dates that surpress our learning because god forbid we learn slower than our other classmates. We should be taught how to find ourselves but instead we are taught how we are supposed to act or think. The veil has been pushing down over my eyes all my life but just recently it has been further shoved over my face. The veil has moved because everyone has been telling me how to be and how to be a success and I just let them. I need to find me and find what makes me happy because that will be the true success.
3. In the future to keep the veil from being pushed any lower down my eyes I need to find myself. I need to figure out who I am and find out what makes me happy. I'm starting a long journey of self-discovery but hopefully it will make me happy. I would like to finish school and discover my own belief about the subjects that interest me. I would also like to find a career that I love and not one that my parents love.
4. Strays didn't do anything to lift the veil from my eyes. I didn't see the point in reading it and I can usually find a reason for doing anything. If anything I just felt bad for the kids because they were innocent and their messed up family was pushing their horrible choices on their children.
MIXTAPE:
THEME: Things I Love. My audience is anyone who loves good music that has a good message and is catchy.
SONGS:
1. WHITE BLANK PAGE- Mumford and Sons- I love this song because Marcus Mumford is so angry in this song and I love it. When he says, ” You desired my attention but denied my affections,” I feel like pretty much every person can relate to feeling this way.
2. SKINNY LOVE- Bon Iver- I’m obsessed with this song. I love Bon Iver’s voice and the hook is so catchy. “ I told you to be patient, I told you to be fine, and I told you to be balanced, and I told you to be kind.”
3. HOME- Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zones- I love the whistling, the hook is perfect and I think everyone can relate to wanting to go home. Ahh, Home. Let me come home. Home is wherever I’m with you.”
4. SOMEBODY THAT I USED TO KNOW- Gotye ft. Kimbra- The male and female voices mesh so well and its a relatable song. “ Now and then I think of when we were together. Like when you said you felt so happy you could die. Told myself that you were right for me. But felt so lonely in your company. But that was love and it’s an ache I still remember.”
5. I WON’T GIVE UP- Jason Mraz- I’ve always been a huge Jason Mraz fan and this song is so catchy and has a good message.” I won’t give up on us. Even if the skies get rough. I’m giving you all my love. I’m still looking up.”
6. LITTLE TALKS- Of Mice and Men- This is one of my new favorite bands because I like how well the male and female’s voices mesh together.” Soon it will all be over, buried with our past. We used to play outside when we were young and full of life and full of love.”
7. AWAKE MY SOUL- Mumford and Sons- I had an “aha” moment when I first heard this lyric from this song. “In these bodies we will live, in these bodies we will die. And where you invest your love, you invest your life.”
8. SLOW DANCING IN A BURNING ROOM- John Mayer- The serene music and John Mayer’s beautiful voice help make this song so amazing. “It’s not a silly little moment, it’s not the storm before the calm. This is the deep and dying breath of this love that we’ve been working on.”
9. I WILL FOLLOW YOU INTO THE DARK- Death Cab for Cutie- I like the melody and the lyrics are beautiful, I would love someone to love me enough to follow me into the dark. “Love of mine some day you will die. But I’ll be close behind. I’ll follow you into the dark”
10. HAUNTED- Taylor Swift- I love Taylor’s voice in this song and I could relate to the way she feels. “Oh, I’m holding my breath. Won’t lose you again, something’s made your eyes go cold.”
This I Believe Final Draft
I am unsure of the type of person that I am. I’m currently on a journey of self-discovery. I believe that the ability to change frequently and bend without breaking is the greatest strength that human beings possess. On the brink of the first huge transition of my life, I find myself unsure and conflicted.
High school is supposed to be the greatest years of your life. No responsibilites, no big expectations and a strong dependency on your parents. Personally, high school was amazing but the transition to adulthood isn’t quite as fun. I’ve become less carefree and much more responsible because now my life choices matter. I want to make an impact on this world and without a strong drive and some determination that will not happen.
In this life to succeed you need to broaden your interpretation of reality and start to see that we all believe in our own reality. Recently I’ve had a chance to broaden my interpretation of a reality that I had never experienced prior. I’ve been working at a resort that caters to the 1% or the insanely rich. At work these people come in and thow money around without even thinking about it. Everything is about public perception to them. I went to a charity event where wealthy people were the attendees. These superficial, phony people were so brainwashed that they could care less about the charities’ message, but rather how much money they could spend. It was disgusting because they were stuck living in a false reality. A reality that they created for themselves and curiosity never lead them to explore other people’s realities. To me morals and hard work are really all that matters or counts for anything. Money never measured any person’s self worth.
To get to the top you need to create strong relations with others and have a contagious attitude. These lessons and obervations that I have made will take me far if I choose to learn from the examples of others. My dad has been a huge influence in the way that I now see the world. He told me, ” some people take sidesteps instead of moving forward, but the key is to never take a step backward.” As human beings we are always changing and reinventing our perception on either ourselves or others. To move forward toward my future, I need to learn from the past. This quote from the +44 song, Baby Come On,” the past is only the future with the lights on,” represents the lessons that we have all learned and will continue to carry on for the rest of our future.
LitIn6- Week 5
1. Hamlet is indecisive but very calculating.
2. Claudius is the villian of Hamlet.
3. Incestuous sheets= the mother of Hamlet.
4. Everyone dies, oh what a tragedy!
5. Ophelia wears a mask of deceit.
6. King Hamlet wants revenge on Claudius
Hamlet Week 5
1. I believe that one can have all of the right information and make the wrong decision. Hamlet has all of the information pertaining to his father’s death and he knows that Claudius is guilty. Even with all of these facts, he is still aprehensive towards making a move to get revenge. Hamlet needs to make a desicion before it is too late and the opportunity surpasses him. Sometimes making no descion at all can be the wrong one. He needs to be nobel and avenge his father’s murder!
Loyalty to one’s self is more important than loyalty to friend when that friend could either get you into trouble or get in trouble themself. Hamlet’s friends will be loyal to a point while he is pretending to be mad. The second that Hamlet gets himself into danger they will rat him out in a second. Sometimes the right thing to do is to not support someone’s terrible actions or decisions.
3. I’m for Prop 28 because it will enable inexperienced politicians to gain experience and help pass important legislations and laws. Being in the office longer will weed out the non dedicated and bring up the politicians that enjoy hard work and bettering America.
Act 3, Scenes 3&4- Hamlet Week 4:
King Claudius is talking to Laertes the entire time. He is trying to convince Laertes the his father died and the man who did it tried to kill him. He is trying to say that Hamlet did it and he is going to protect Hamlet but Laertes needs to do something to get back at Hamlet. King Claudius is such a liar and he will do anything to become more powerful.
Now Laertes is saying that Ophelia has gone crazy but she used to be so normal. Claudius os also trying to say that he is going to help guide Laertes to get revenge because Polonius deserves to be avenged.
Laertes, like Hamlet, is conflicted on whether it is best to take action now or later. Claudius basically is convincing Laertes to kill Hamlet and get revenge the entire act.
I starred revenge because it is an excellent motif for this play. I also starred, ” Laertes, was your father dear to you? Or are you like the painting of sorrow, A face without a heart?” I like this saying because Claudius is asking whether Laertes actually loved his father or if he was just pretending too. Lastly, I starred ” So moral that, but dip a knife in it…,” because it is saying that anything is moral until you corrupt it.
Act 3, Scene 1- Hamlet Week 3:
I starred “To be or not to be that is the question:” because it is a super famous question of ones upcoming decision. My summary is, is it better to take lives outrageous fortunes or is it better to fight back? Suffer or persist? The Analysis is that Hamlet wants to know if life is worth living. I sympathize with him because no one is there to help him make tough decisions.
The next summary is conscience makes us cowards. We don’t know our future and it is making Hamlet freeze up. I think that Hamlet needs to decide what he wants to do and stop whining and feeling sorry for himself. His fear slows him down and if he doesn’t take this opportunity it might pass him.
When Ophelia enters it is clear that they are both lying about something and they need to stop the act and drop their facade and be together. ” Rich gifts was poor when givers grove unkind.”
Is she honest? Beautiful or fair? If you are beautiful, honesty might be overshadowing the underlying meaning that they love eachother and have to act a certain way to appease spectators.
Hamlet tells Ophelia not to have a sinner’s baby, Hamlet is a sinner an he names all of the reasons. Reiterates his sins and tells Ophelia to leave.
Ophelia is two-faced and Hamlet rips women saying that they act innocent but they are ignorant. Hamlet is both angry and crazy. Hamlet has anger towards women because his mother married Claudius so quickly and he needs to give Ophelia the benefit of the doubt.
Ophelia says that Hamlet has gone crazy and she feels rejected by such an amazing man. They need to stop picking on each other and start being honest.
Quickwrite Week 3-
" Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud."
- 1 Corinthians 13:4
I use patience everyday of my life. I literally have to exercise the most important virtue at every second of the day. I wait for school to be over, I wait for practice to begin, I wait to graduate. This quote is describing how love is the most virtuous act in the world. Love will wait forever and it will never betray you even when the love of your life does.
Hamlet Week 2 Analysis:
In the play Hamlet by Shakespeare, Hamlet says that he is angry with his mother because she moved on so quickly with his uncle, Claudius.
He supports this claim by first explaining that he is angered by his father’s death. He is so mad that he wishes he could die. The world is also a terrible place, ” ‘tis an unweeded garden that grows to seed, things rank and gross in nature possess it merely.”
Then, Hamlet describes how much his mother and father loved each other, “so loving to my mother that he might not beteem the winds of heaven visit her face too roughly.”
Toward the end of the text, He explains different scenarios that describe how quickly his mother moved on to Claudius. ” O, most wicked speed, to post with such dexterity to incestuous sheets.” He also compares his father to the almighty Hercules because he looks up to his father so much.
Hamlet wishes his mother had not moved on quite so quickly to his on uncle because he feels that his father was an excellent King and man. He also believes that his father deserved much more respect than that.
This speech is significant because it explains how angry Hamlet is at his mother and uncle at their hasty, disrespectful marriage. It also shows the high pedestal that Hamlet held his father up to.
Act 1, Scene 2 Annotation- Hamlet Week 2:
In Act 1 Scene 2, Hamlet questions life and explains how “rank” and “gross” our world has become. His own mom remarried his uncle not even 2 months after his father was buried! He goes on to explain what an amazing man his father was, he even compares his dad to Hercules. His anger and frustration comes out when he calls out his mother for, ” A little month, or ere those shoes were old with which she follow’d my poor father’s body.” He basically is saying that his father’s new shoes weren’t even a month old before she married his uncle. Hamlet is so cynical towards life at this point that he is considering suicide.
” To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, ‘tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish’d. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there’s the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause: there’s the respect
That makes calamity of so long life;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor’s wrong, the proud man’s contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law’s delay,
The insolence of office and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscover’d country from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o’er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action. - Soft you now!
The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all my sins remember’d.”
- Hamlet
Hamlet by William Shakespeare
