You can hate the marauders ofc, even I got the ick in that part of thp, BUT no one will ever convince me they (expecially James) are the ones to blame for how Snape turned out.

Sorry, but I’ll always choose the working-class kid with no resources who was groomed and recruited into a terrorist group because, from his perspective, it was the only way out, especially when the “good guys” were either his bullies or the people who enabled them. Then he regretted it, spent 18 years making up for his mistakes, and worked his ass off to save everyone else before himself, over the aristocratic abusers who mistreated people because they had the economic and social capital to do it, as well as the privilege to be seen as “good,” yet never once regretted being classist pieces of shit.

I’m also not someone who throws around Nazi comparisons lightly. Call me crazy, but I’m really not into comparing a fictional group of nationalist terrorists to the Nazis who put my grandfather in a concentration camp. Fucking clown.

This is exactly what has always baffled me about the specific type of marauders fan that sees it as, like, a competition between James/Sirius and Snape as to who is “the good guy” and who is “the bad guy.” They fundamentally seem to really believe that it comes down to “choosing” one or the other of them.

I’ve seen Snape fans do it, too, but they’re a lot more likely to appreciate the character for what he is: someone with good qualities and bad qualities, neither of which diminishes the other. I can give marauders fans the benefit of the doubt by saying that I don’t usually interact with them except when they overlap the Snape fandom, which is usually to fight, and so maybe there are marauders fans who specifically like them because they recognize that they are flawed people, but I have never seen it.

What James is has nothing to do with what Snape is. James was a bully. There is no downplaying that. He was also a loyal friend and ostensibly on the “right” side of the war. Marauders fans love to claim that James changed and Snape didn’t, but that’s a complete fabrication on both accounts. We don’t KNOW if James changed, because he DIED. The ONLY evidence that indicates he changed was that Lily stopped hating him, and his friends say that he did. Neither of these is particularly strong. Lily could have simply stopped caring if he bullied Snape because she was angry at him, or he could have continued to do it behind her back, as is implied. His friends say that because A. his bad behavior is also an indictment of themselves, and B. they don’t want to speak ill of the dead to their friend’s orphaned teenage son. Since very few people stay the same at 30 as they were at 15, it’s reasonable to assume he would have changed in some ways. But no one will ever know because he died before that.

The claim that Snape didn’t change is so completely against his entire arc that you have to be functionally retarded to make this claim and so I won’t even bother to argue it, the people who say this either never read the books, only care about fanfic, or are being intentionally obtuse so they can lamely excuse their fave’s behavior towards him. None of those people are worth engaging. Source that he changed: literally his entire story. He gave his life to try and make up for what he did by telling Voldemort the prophecy.

Whether James changed, or would have changed, has exactly zero bearing on whether Snape changed. They are separate characters whose lives completely diverged after school. Arguing that Snape is evil because James is good, or vice versa, is moronic as fuck.

James has good qualities and bad qualities. Snape has good qualities and bad qualities. Most Snape fans aren’t out here defending Snape bullying children, whereas most James fans I’ve come across spend quite a lot of time trying to defend him bullying Snape. Which is insane! If you have to find excuses that aren’t textually justified to back up why you like a minor background character, which James is, then I don’t think you even like that character at all. I think you like the hot rich bisexual jock you see in fanfic. You’re allowed to like a character without that character being morally perfect. There! You’re free! You can like the rich jock bully background character guilt-free! You don’t have to “choose” between them! You don’t have to go around defending it by putting down other characters and making yourself look stupid!

Imagine when these people find out you don’t have to choose which fictional character you’re interested in based on who you think is most morally sound

This isn't my preferred rudimentary-body theory either, but this is the exact sort of thought process that I hate most when it comes to character analysis. It's nonsensical that it would be remotely out of character for Voldemort to be an expert on a type of magic that you're imagining was his chosen method of beginning to regain a body. In fact it's very in character for Voldemort, who was an extremely capable sorcerer and over-prepared (SIX horcruxes) his immortality situation, to be an expert on what needs to be done in this situation (or the only alternative I see is that his self-confident stubbornness, i.e. what made him try the Killing Curse on Harry with the Elder Wand just one last time, prevented him from preparing for losing his body at all because of denial this could ever happen to him). It's completely ridiculous to decide that oh fertility and baby-delivering aren't Voldemort's vibe and therefore he couldn't have used those things to regain a body. That is unrelated to whether this theory is plausible—if that were what needed to be done, he'd obviously know how to do it... This is not evidence or logic at all. I mean it's circular logic I guess. You made all of it up and justified it with itself

#not to even mention that we have no idea whatsoever whether wormtail was interested in those sorts of magic #not to mention that you haven't taken magic into consideration at all re: the short timeline #the department of mysteries time jar grew stuff very quickly so it's obviously possible who's to say voldemort couldn't do that

There is something so interesting about the way Crouch described the torture of the Longbottoms as "a crime so heinous that we have rarely heard the like of it within this court" and what it says about Bellatrix.

I believe torturing two aurors until they literally lose themselves in their own minds is not easy to achieve. On the surface, it does tell us about the extent of the sadism and cruelty, but when you take Bellatrix's love for Voldemort into account, I think it says a lot more about her grief.

She believed he'd return, but that doesn't mean Bella wasn't grieving his disappearance for months (I'd guess at least four months since people were starting to feel safe again).

Also, Voldemort had been in power for a decade and I'm sure that court had heard about plenty of horrible things committed by the captured Death Eaters. And yet one of the worst crimes was committed by Bellatrix while she was grieving Voldemort...

I think Bella's grief and desperation played a major role in the Longbottoms' fate. I wouldn't be surprised if Barty was telling the truth when he denied the charges and that Bellatrix alone carried out the torture. I also think she used a lot of Legilimency on Frank and Alice, but that's another story.

Two Thoughts:

People forget that Quirrell is the only other person in the series besides Harry to experience being a horcrux. He is the temporary horcrux; Harry is the accidental one. It blows my mind when I think about that because I can’t even fathom what that must’ve been like. I imagine maybe similar to when the kids wore the locket. Except that Quirrell was alone. Every day. For almost a year. With no support and no one to share the burden, his body dying by inches from the possession.

We know Harry was emotionally unpleasant for Voldemort to possess. I wonder if Quirrell was any easier to tolerate? They both seem more willing to accept the costs of certain outcomes, at the very least. The text tells us Quirrell was punished more than once for resisting his master's commands, so that's a strike against him, I suppose. If I put on my Voldemort hat, I suspect Quirrell's persistent feelings of inadequacy would be irritating, too, but useful. Still easier to tolerate than Harry, maybe?
