— FROM, 4x06 "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter"
Kristine Frøseth as Annabel "Nan" St. George The Buccaneers, S02E03
Eva should’ve been satisfied in the knowledge that she’d been right all along. It wasn’t just her being anxious over nothing — approaching Kelly was a bad call. Her memory hadn't failed her. Yet she felt the opposite of comforted, the nervous pit in her stomach growing bigger, colder. Eva was alone there, friendless, and Kelly’s dismissal was hard to swallow despite having expected it. “I… don’t know,” Eva nearly stammered, the surge of confidence that had compelled her to come out in the first place quickly dissipating. She hadn’t been expecting flowers and rainbows of course, but for Kelly to have nothing to say surprisingly hurt more than being confronted by her. “I used to know you,” she tried, voice low, unsure. “We used to know each other better than anyone else. Back then, I.. didn’t think that would ever change.”
Kelly suspected that Eva was reducing this cold reception down to how their friendship had ended, to the argument they'd had over Jonas. It would've made more sense than the truth, and Kelly found herself wishing it were that simple. But living on the outside had opened her eyes to how horrific the world truly was, to how awful people could be. What Eva had done back home was nothing in comparison to what she'd witnessed since then; until now, she hadn't even thought about the betrayal. Still, it was uncomfortable to see Eva upset, hesitant. She was right, there had been a time in which they'd known each other best. Now, that role belonged to Alicia. If only Kelly had the words, and the strength, to explain herself, it might've helped comfort them both. "I didn't think it would change, either. But it has. The friendship we had... it feels so distant." Kelly pushed her drink away, realising the alcohol was only worsening her state of mind. "I've forgiven you. That's not what this is about."
"Shit," Ellie muttered, pulling herself up and wiping at her stinging hands, ignoring the new ache in her back. She'd just attempted to climb a fence, something she'd only ever done with Joel's assistance before but had now decided was entirely possible on her own. She didn't need him. She didn't fucking need him. That was the only thought in her mind as she tried it again, mustering all the strength she had, hoping it would reach her fingertips and allow her to do a pull-up. But alas, she fell again, the soles of her shoes sliding down the panels. Perhaps it was all the equipment she had stacked in her bag weighing her down. With another groan, Ellie stood back to survey the fence line, wondering if there was an obvious weak spot somewhere in Alexandria's border. She couldn't be in that house a moment longer, not with all the pitiful glances and hushed conversations. She knew her remaining guardians were just trying to protect her, but that only served to piss her off more. She didn't need protecting. What Joel had done was unforgiveable. It had turned her whole understanding of the world upside down, all of the trust and progress she'd made gone in an instant. He'd been her family, the lens through which she saw the world, and now she had nothing. Nobody else could understand that, no matter how hard they tried. So, she couldn't be there any more. Camping on the outskirts, exploring like she used to on her own, was exactly what she needed. Finally admitting defeat, Ellie dropped the heavy bag and began searching for anything useful, anything she could stand on to get her over the fence. Eyeing a couple of roadside bins, Ellie reached out to drag one closer when something darted out between the metal. Startled, she jumped back, pulling her switchblade. But it was only a cat. Gasping, Ellie's demeanor immediately changed. Gone were the frown lines that seemed to permanently mar her face, the simmering anger in her eyes. Suddenly, she was the picture of childlike innocence, crouching down to meet the creature. "Hi, kitty," she whispered softly, reaching out slowly like Joel had once shown her, letting the animal come to her. "What's your name?"
Kelly had found Sprinkles on the outskirts, en route to Alexandria. She'd been covered in a layer of filth, malnourished, but still tamed. Nothing the cat had experienced in the wild had dissuaded her from seeking out human comfort. So after a hefty round of begging, Kelly had managed to convince Rick and Daryl to bring the pet along, so long as Kelly took full responsibility. If it wasn't for Peeta and Jesus' intervention, the promise of a town with no strained resources, she'd have lost the argument. In fact, Sprinkles probably would've become their next meal. Now, she symbolised something else. Hope. Normality. She'd been a great comfort to Kelly since their arrival here, a promise of a better future to come.
Still, Sprinkles had evidently adjusted to the freedom of the outdoors, so often wandered outside alone whilst Kelly was with Judith, acting as the town's free pest control. Seeking her out an hour before the sunset had become their routine, one she enjoyed, as her cat never strayed too far. Today, it appeared that someone else had found her first. As she approached the bins that Sprinkles often scouted for mice, Kelly noticed a young girl there, hand extended in greeting. She watched on in silence for a moment, allowing the teenager to enjoy the moment, as it mirrored her own first encounter with the cat. A shred of innocence in their broken world.
It was only when the cat's name was asked that Kelly intervened, approaching and crouching besides them both. "Her name is Sprinkles." She reached into her pocket, pulling out a small bag, with contained meat chopped into small cubes. She held it out to the other girl to hold. "Give her a few pieces of this chicken, she'll become your best friend."
With Jonas occupied for the evening, Eva had opted for a night in, curled up on her bed with a bowl of ice-cream. But it didn’t take long for her insecurities to set in, feeling incredibly lonely, itching to call him, call anybody. The only problem was, she didn’t have any friends. Not anymore. Instantly, she thought of Kelly. Eva knew she was in town. The group she’d shown up with had caused a big fuss upon arrival only recently, and now they kept to themselves on the other side of town. Eva hadn’t dared approach. She wasn’t sure exactly what got her out of bed and into a skirt, but not an hour later, she was at the town’s only nightclub, scanning the room for any familiar face, anyone she might've met at school so far. Her stomach dropped when she realised she knew none. None but Kelly’s. Eva hesitated, seeing the girl alone at the bar. But that same misplaced confidence somehow forced her feet forward, and a few moments later, Eva was standing beside her. “Hi!” She called out over the music, announcing her presence. She was shot a glance, assumedly one of surprise, but was given little else. Eva sighed. “You can’t ignore me forever, you know. We both live here now.” Silence. She reached out, tapping Kelly’s shoulder. “Come on, Kel, say something.”
Kelly was unsure why she’d ended up in the nightclub. Rick had warned their group to stay close, to travel in pairs, at least until they’d found some semblance of trust with the rebels and their town. Yet here she was anyway, alone and disoriented, the music a dull throbbing in her ears. Perhaps she’d been desperate to rekindle with her old self, to find a glimmer of normality. The younger rebels seemed to be doing a good job at holding onto their innocence, but seeing Eva now, Kelly realised that part of herself was long gone. Her refusal to speak didn’t stem from their past, from their lost friendship, or their triangle with Jonas. It more so stemmed from fear, of how she might sound, of someone noticing the change. Rick, Daryl, Camden – none of them had known her before. Eva had. Kelly was far from prepared for the comparison, the reminder of a life that seemed so far out of reach.
The silence extended for a while, but Eva made it apparent she was in no rush to leave. Reluctantly, Kelly sighed, her head turning towards the other girl, her expression unchanged. The initial approach had taken her by surprise, not having expected to cross paths with anyone from her home District; but now she felt numb. Had the last few years been simpler, perhaps Kelly would’ve been thankful to see her. Happy, almost. Now the mere thought of conversing with Eva left her feeling tired. “What do you want me to say?” It was an honest question, her tone carrying weight behind it. “You don’t know me anymore, Eva. I’m not the same person I was.”
