Whenever I’m worried I’m stupid I just remember that there are people out there who think the vampires in Sinners “came out of nowhere” and seriously don’t understand that they’re a metaphor for white culture vultures who appropriate every aspect of black culture they can and (figuratively) suck it dry of everything that makes it special. Delta Slim says it out loud (“See, white folks like the blues just fine. They just don’t like the people who make it.”) Honestly, it got me to examine some of my own behaviors to see where I’m guilty of disregarding the cultural context of black art, or to check up on “brainrot slang” to see if it’s actually just horribly misused AAVE for the umpteenth time. The message is not hidden at all, and if you didn’t pick up on it I’m going to assume that you were actively shutting your eyes and covering your ears until the vampires showed up.
