hey for tgcf, can you explain the phrase “with heavenly official’s blessings, no paths are bound”? i don’t get the meaning behind it 😅
Sure!
To start with, the Chinese phrase is:
天官赐福,百无禁忌!
(tiān guān cì fú, bǎi wú jìn jì!)
So, it’s based on a couple different things:
First, the ‘tian guan’ part actually comes from a particular Daoist deity (called Tianguan), although in TGCF, it refers to any generic official in heaven. The full phrase ‘tian guan ci fu’, for Daoists, is a prayer for blessings from the god Tianguan, who presides over fortune and is associated with the Shangyuan festival (I got this info from this twitter post zhang made--see that post and this wikipedia page for for more info about Tianguan).
As for the second part, it’s a chengyu (that is, a four-character idiom) meaning ‘all taboos are off/anything goes/nothing is taboo’ (although Suika translates it as ‘no paths are bound’). It was recorded in the Qing Dynasty in Fan Yin’s Yue Yan. (Source)
As for how this phrase relates to the themes of TGCF--in chapter 3, we first have Ling Wen saying the first four characters and Xie Lian saying the second four--Ling Wen is basically saying good luck, while Xie Lian is replying in a carefree manner--I think his main point in saying ‘anything goes!’ is to convey that Ling Wen doesn’t have to be so polite to him; it won’t make a difference in his luck. Xie Lian is used to not thinking much of himself and getting caught in all sorts of misfortune--he’s been through the worst, so nothing is taboo to him anymore.
And, over the course of the novel, we see that indeed, nothing is taboo for most of the heavenly officials--they all have skeletons in their closets. So, it’s a bit tongue-in-cheek, pairing a prayer for good fortune from the oh-so-holy heavenly officials with the phrase ‘nothing is taboo’. Xie Lian is thought to be the worst, most taboo and unlucky god, but in the end he is actually the most honest and most generous.
The phrase comes full circle with the ending lines of Ch.244--previously, Xie Lian has been suppressed by all sorts of taboos, so no one in their right mind would worship him. But, with Hua Cheng’s help in exposing the wrongdoings of heaven and freeing Xie Lian from his shackles, it becomes possible for Xie Lian to once again accept prayers and bestow blessings, without any taboos in the way.
So,
By heaven official’s blessing, all taboos are off!

Alright I just can’t look at this anymore. It’s not where I wanted it to be but I don’t think my skill level is quite there yet still.
It’s better than the original piece that it is a re-draw of (seen under the cut), so that’ll have to be good enough.
Happy Hanguang June!

I was feeling agitated and artblocked yesterday so I decided to give my brain a rest by watching TV and then the next thing I knew these were in front of me
Congrats to YQY on winning the poll LMFAOOOO
This is an awesome use of what is probably a master's degree if not a doctorate and I am 100% thrilled that she shared it even though it was embarrassing and she squeaked.
Thank you, adorable scientist, for making people's lives better.
As an Australian, THIS WOMAN IS A FUCKING GODSEND.
Californian (sup, fellow desert-havers) i've been using this since i saw it and it works so fucken good dude (i often have to put like 8 dogs in my car, so it's extra important my car isn't attempting to go super-nova when we get in)
Happy Pride month 🥰🌈
I don't have a pride post planned but I was recently made aware of the new ace flag and wowie I really like it!
This flag was created by Ashabi, a queer Nigerian-American artist (she/they)!
I love how it explicitly includes the ace mircolabels, and how it highlights multiculturalism and intersectionality. While I do like the look of the old flag, it was odd that it highlighted allies and only represented 2 ace mircrolabels.
Plus, it's quite a nice color scheme! Reminds me of huckleberry lemonade.
I Just found this and let me thank you so much because its such a beautiful flag! Thank you!
Been wanting to work more with texture and find a style of rendering that doesn't stress me out. I think we are getting there
i get that americans love their cultural imperialism, but it really does piss me off that june is “international” pride month just because something happened in the united states.
in aotearoa, june isn’t our pride, it’s theirs. marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera are their historical figures, not ours. the phrase that “you owe your rights to Black trans women” is true there, but here we owe our rights to (mostly) Māori historical figures. i have the freedoms i do because of the legacy of an entirely different set of people operating in an entirely different context at entirely different times.
But because of american cultural imperialism, most queer people in Aotearoa don’t even know our own queer history. Carmen Rupe, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, the Dorian Society, Gillian Laundon, Georgina Beyer, and the Wolfenden Association are some of our queer history. We should know their names! we should know what they did for us! but because of the power of the american imperial machine, we don’t.
our national pride month should be july, the month that the Homosexual Law Reform Act passed in 1986. our two largest cities hold their pride festivals in february and march, respectively. american queer history has very little (or nothing, depending on who you ask) to do with our queer history. anecdotally, from my own queries, queer youth in aotearoa know more about american queer history than our own.
anyway, happy pride, americans. i’m truly sorry that most of you don’t see the negative impact your nation’s culture has on the rest of the world. and to the rest of the world reading this, try searching for your own country and culture’s queer history, don’t accept the american narratives as your own. we deserve our own histories divorced from the cultural hegemony of the USA.
TW; talks of colorism/racism in fandom
okay I have a feeling this is gonna be controversial- and I am not attacking anybody- but I am asking y'all to consider that fanartists who make Binghe consistently the darker skinned character without investigating the undertones this has is in poor taste at best.
This is something I've seen a lot of black people on here talk about, and I want to give them credit (especially Creating Black Characters) for this obviously because they have been actively dealing with this form of bigotry and have a lot more experience with racism than me- but I've yet to see this applied to the SVSSS fandom, and it's making me kind uncomfortable.
To explain, having the dominant partner, who is in-text aggressive, be the (often one) character you headcanon as a deeper skin tone than the rest is all too common. It plays into a lot of nasty stereotypes. There are worse versions of it, and the idea this originated in this fandom, or it is the worst here is incorrect, but it does not mean it doesn't play into the stereotypes.
I do think there are ways to do it well, you can look at his half demon heritage as an allegory for racial hatred in our world. But that will say things about those who then hunt demons (like Liu Qingge). Hell, I think Tianlang Jun's storyline of being locked away for loving a cultivator, and how everyone assumes the worst of him for being a demon can play into this as well. But, just because this is written in a fantasy novel doesn't mean it doesn't have real world consequences.
I'm not saying you can't draw Binghe with darker skin- but maybe consider drawing other characters with dark skin too. And maybe think about how portraying the sexually aggressive and demonic character as the only one with dark skin reads.
And I love Luo Binghe's character. I think he's a great blorbo- but I also want SVSSS to be a safe fandom for everybody. I've had so much fun here, and I want my friends to be able to participate without feeling uncomfortable.
If anyone has anything to add please be respectful.
