My attempt to explain Chris Marker's unexplainable yet fascinating San Soleil for the Stranger than Fiction documentary series:
"An abstract travelogue punctuated by dense, poetic descriptions and lush, vibrant imagery, Marker floats through his frames with an intentional dissonance that feels both reckless and precise. Regarded as a master editor in the days before Final Cut and non-linear editing, Marker bends and twists the documentary form in a way that never claims to know the truth about anything, and questions the very nature of history, memory and reality."

Pity Parade
Every year my Mom tells me to watch the Macy's parade on Thanksgiving, and every year I tell her I don't give a damn. I'm not quite the parade-ing type (unless, of course, the What Cheer? Brigade is involved), but this year I saw it, and it was glorious.
As I approached the corner of 54th and 9th on Wednesday night after my shift at the club, I saw a convoy of half-done and totally deflated parade pieces. It was hilarious and absurd, and it made me reconsider my behavior a bit. Yes, things are hard, but I'm working harder- and I'm done complaining.
My Wednesday evening was a hazy, one-block-bar-hop in Hell's Kitchen with my revolutionary-love-interest that gave way to a late, lazy dinner in Queens with a good friend who shared the impending pain of working retail on Black Friday.
I am grateful. And I am lucky. I have so very many things, and I have accomplished so much. Now I know how much more I am capable of. I may "only" be working retail/service jobs, but I'm working my ass off, and I'm making it work on my own terms. I've written more this month than I have since I graduated, and I've published more work in the past two weeks than I have in 5 years. That's progress, no matter what route you take or how your float looks along the way. What matters is that you get there in one piece, with enough breath left in your lungs to rise above.
