Over Thanksgiving, my wife's mom said to her that she grieved "the son she lost". It pained my beloved so much that she asked me if I ever mourned her like that (we had been dating for like 10+ years before she realized she was trans). I said no; and, when asked why, I thought about it for a second.
Being a very metaphorical thinker, the image of a butterfly came to mind. This beautiful thing that grew out of something else. No longer what it was before, but something new and wonderful. A continuation, a becoming, a realization of self.
I turned to my wife and said "you do not mourn the caterpillar".
She loved that so much that I got @vaspider of NerdyKeppie to put it on a pennant to hang in our home.

The thing is when my kid came out to us it didn't make them magically a new person
It just made them happier
Our main concern was how other people would treat them and we wanted them to know that we were firmly in their corner
But they were still the same kid
Researching trans and non-binary stuff also unlocked my own gender journey but that's unrelated
But my husband, who is as cis as they come, was like "yeah that's the same kid"
And maybe that's because we had put no expectations on our kid. We just wanted them to be happy
My personal experience with being asked this question and then given that line, is that the neurotypical person expected you to feel shame. I have some slightly less anecdotal evidence to back up this anecdotal experience. I took substitute teacher training once, and we were told that the best thing to do with middle schoolers "acting up," was to shame them, to figure out how to draw attention to them and this negative attention in front of their peers would shame them into good behaviour, or at least silence. I raised my hand, having already distinguished myself as the "weirdo" of the group, and said, "Is this the reason I spent a lot of time in the principal's office for truthfully, loudly, and clearly answering questions like, 'would you care to share your thoughts with the class?'" And was told yes, that was a perfect example, but I was the rare case where it backfires.
Since then, I have responded to that type of question with, "Do you want an explanation, or was your intent simply to indicate that I need to feel inferior, right now?" and it does tend to turn the tables a little bit.
I'd say for many people the difference is based on the presumption of whatever happened being intentional or not, and people are really bad at discerning this, especially for neurodivergent people and children. If a person gives what they think are clear instructions and someone doesn't follow them, or they see someone doing something that to them feels obstinate for "no reason," etc., they can't always grasp that something they think is simple couple be misunderstood. Instead they assume that person is being difficult on purpose, and thus view any explanation of why the person is acting that way as a sort of lie or deflection from responsibility rather than a rational explanation. A teacher who can't figure out the difference sees two kids with no homework - one is a slacker who says the dog ate it, and the other is an undiagnosed autistic who insists the instructions were unclear - as the same, because doing the homework "should" have been easy and automatic, when the two kids are not actually the same at all.
I still remember having a frustrating, circular conversation with my kindergarten teacher where she told me to pick up some crayons someone had knocked on the floor, and I kept insisting that they were not my crayons. This is because it had been drilled into me that we were supposed to clean up after ourselves, and I had not made the mess, so asking me of all people to clean it up made no sense to me, because I was five. In my mind, once I asserted that the mess was not mine, she should have moved on to the next student until she found the culprit, and had them do it. She only saw that she had given me a basic order, and I was talking back to her, and she assumed that "they're not mine" was avoiding the task out of spite rather than genuinely not understanding why I was being ordered to do the task in the first place.

this is a vegetarian potato curry recipe that's about 75% spices; once you get the potatoes in there you can really do whatever you want with it
this is literally just pasta, broccoli, and cheese babey and you can live off that shit for DAYS it makes such a big portion

don't let the name fool you these potatoes are delicious any time. not just breakfast.
this is slightly more than five ingredient when you add them together but if you have time and really wanna fuckin treat yourself I recommend these chicken strips + this cornbread + either these potatoes or these buttered veggies on the side.
These are my two favorite comfort foods. They're very easy to make and dont take long to cook.
Garlic butter rice
Orzo mac and cheese (comes out a little bit soupy)
this recipe for gogumabap (sweet potato and rice) saved my life when i couldn't eat hardly anything for a long time. the recipe itself calls for a heavy bottomed pot but you can absolutely use a rice cooker and put the rice and diced sweet potato in together and just let the machine do its thing
If you have a crockpot, I do a really good pulled pork carnitas that is:
Pork - any cut boneless
Onions- chopped anyway you like
Orange juice - about one cup (you can use about 2 tablespoons of the condensed frozen stuff if you have it)
Root beer, pepsi, or other cola soda - about one cup
Preferred chili mix seasoning - 1-2 packets depending on how intense you like your flavoring and how much pork you put in
Garlic - as much as you wanna, specifically smashed not cut
Canned or frozen corn - to your preference
Dump all that into your crockpot in the morning (or the night before) and let it run on low until dinner. Cook some rice if you feel like it, or just serve over tortillas.
