Maomao may be the main character of Apothecary Diaries but she wouldn’t be who she is without Jinshi. People who wanna be mad at fans for liking his character, enjoying the romance between him and Maomao and what their dynamic brings to the novels and anime don’t get that this series likely wouldn’t be what it is without his character. Maomao would still be an emotionally stunted apothecary with absolutely no power, stuck in a no-nothing existence in the pleasure district having changed nothing and no one’s lives at all without Jinshi’s influence and help. He does matter to the story as a whole and growth of Maomao as a character. So let’s not disparage people who like his plotline and don’t see Apothecary Diaries as just a single woman’s mystery novel series because that’s being too reductionist.

This is lowkey giving internalized misogyny to me. Both MAOMAO and JINSHI are important to each other's growth to be honest. Jinshi gets a deep look into his own privilege in the world through maomao and grows as a character and learns his place. He's still got a shit ton of entitlement over maomao and the way he is almost too comfortable touching her all the time (without her showing any sort of consent tbh), I hope there's more character growth coming for him. I'm diverting here but yeah ... Jinshi ain't the golden child of apothecary diaries keeping it alive. The series shines because of its excellent portrayal of the quite feminist struggle without demonising the victims of misogyny. Jinshi is a medium to show us the inside workings of this system. "She wouldn't be who she is without jinshi" oh for fucks sake she IS everything she is because of her life experiences and lessons so far - she is the orphan lakan and fengxian created, the manic scientist loumen nurtured, the emotionally stunted but thoroughly loved cat by everyone at the pleasure district, that's all her without jinshi ever being a part of any of it. She's a very well developed character on her own, and has earned her place in the rear palace of her own merit. That's not to say he doesn't play an important part in opening her up to emotions, but he's not an integral part to her character, that's extremely reductionist to say that actually. The story tells you despite how good or smart or talented or beautiful a woman is in this world and how kind or nurturing or understanding a man can become despite his social roles, they are still stuck in the godawful system - everyone from the emperor all the way to xiaolan are victims to the patriarchy. It hurts every single one of them and none of them are able to escape it. Maomao and jinshi are each other's crutches in this system. Making each other a better version of themselves.

You're very much allowed to be a jinshi girl but dismissing the very deeply feminist core of this story for sideing your fav is just... Missing the whole point of this story. It'll always be a story about maomao first. Jinshi is a medium , an important journey that she goes through - not the story itself.

To requote Cristina Yang,

"He's very dreamy. But he's not the sun."

Oh no…not internalized misogyny 😂 honestly though to come on someone’s post where they actually said don’t disparage fans and then say that, I swear. Anywho, my only question would be without Jinshi telling Gyokuyou who saved her daughter with the note on the flower, would we even have a story? This wasn’t a post about mutual growth, I’ve done plenty of those. This was about how Maomao wouldn’t be who she is without Jinshi, which narratively is true. Her accomplishments from start to finish at the rear palace were possible because of his access and her taking advantage of it. Her growth emotionally, opening up to greater challenges, learning to communicate better, all in part to Jinshi pushing her. He’s invaluable to the narrative, as I said, she may be the main character but he helps drive the story in a way that’s become central. Maomao is not this “strong woman who don’t need no man” archetype. She’s intelligent and uses the resources around her to the best of her abilities but she more than anyone knows that women are just as dangerous, cunning and powerful as men. She appreciates the help of men and doesn’t disparage their contributions so maybe we as readers and viewers shouldn’t either. We don’t need to devalue men to uplift women. Fictional characters or no, not everything is about “the patriarchy”.
