everyone acts like your only choice is total excess or complete abstinence. what about moderation… what happened to my good old girl Moderation?
Always always always tell people you love they are so smart and capable. I will die on this hill. More often than not people are raised in unforgiving environments that tell them they are inherently “stupid” and not good enough for things, whether that be parents or cruel bosses or unsupportive friends. An underrated way of supporting people is reminding them they are brilliant no matter what anyone has ever said about their intellect and potential. People can do wonders when it’s affirmed to them their limiting beliefs are just that: limiting beliefs.
To my 25 - 35 year olds, you've reached the age where people around you are starting to give up on themselves because they think it's too late. Don't let that energy rub off on you. It's not too late.
I became a tattoo artist at 49.
Married the love of my life at 50.
Got my Class A CDL at 59.
You've got time.
As long as you're breathing, you've got time.
the most important virtues for the young woman are as follows: time theft, selfishness, orgasms, irreverence to authority, sacrilegious behavior, a questioning mind, and eating regular meals.
Everything about this is a masterpiece: the girl that says “wow” and the girl that says “hi” shyly and bill awkwardly lifting his hand to say hi to them I’m cracking THE FUCK UP
The way they all immediately straightened up their postures like the fuckin pope walked in 😂 the sheer power this cool science man has over the american people is palpable

Through the Looking Glass: A Search for the Self in the Mirror of Relationships by Richard Idemon
Now why would you base your sense of self on the distortions of people who don’t know you. Idealization / demonization are both not accurate portrayals of someone.
I so wish everyone the peace and maturity that comes with truly understanding and honoring the grey area in all things, the maturity that comes with learning that opinions are not currency, and our society’s instinct to make them such is very dangerous. The desire to say “x person has x opinion so they are this category” only gets you so far before you find yourself isolated and disconnected. Find comfort in more evolved ways than knee jerk reactions, it will set you free.
if you're quiet as an adult they kill you
“Sorry I don’t want to spend my precious free time reading a 400 page Russian novel about depression”
“Film bros when you tell them you like having fun instead of watching a 1923 Greek film about divorce”
Okay so like I’ve already talked extensively about people who say this shit are largely shadowboxing against their insecurities about not having what they perceive to be elevated tastes rather than addressing any meaningful “gatekeeping” in the broad realm of media consumption as a whole, so rather than that I’d like to ask why everyone who says shit like this feels a need to emphasize the foreignness of a particular work as another aspect of how undesirable it is to engage with.
Like obviously these people are not literally saying “lmao I’d NEVER read a Russian/Greek/whatever book” but once you start noticing this you start seeing it everywhere and idk man! Not a fan
OPINION | WHY MAKE FELLINI THE SCAPEGOAT FOR NEW CULTURAL INTOLERANCE? — Martin Scorsese, 1993, The New York Times.
Still a hopeless romantic after all this time. Very insane of me.
very irresponsible of me
when I was in high school I had a literature teacher who had a policy of unlimited extra credit. All you had to do was read a book by a notable author (his discretion) and have a little chat with him after school to prove that you read it. No limits, no need for variety (one month I decided I really loved Kurt Vonnegut and just read everything of his I could get my hands on).
Yes, I was tearing through books constantly, and talking to this teacher at least weekly. Because even though I always loved reading as a kid, literature was always a very weak subject for me in terms of a teaching-to-standardized-test school setting (I just do awful on "what color were the curtains" type multiple choice questions. Those details don't stick in my memory THEY JUST DON'T). But that didn't matter for this class. I could just read my way out of any bad test score. I have always had fond memories of how I "fudged" my way through that class and "abused' the extra credit policy.
I was thinking about it again today, and only just now realized that he absolutely tricked me into being well-read, while my teenage self thought I was totally getting away with something. THAT MOTHERFUCKER. I hope he's doing well.
going with the flow in a face down in a river kinda way
