“Rao, give me patience.” Kara muttered. The air conditioning to their apartment had been out for a few days, and Lena was working out. Kara’s thirst, however, was fully on. Her girlfriend, all sweaty and barely wearing anything from the heat?
Yeah, Kara could get used to it. She was so distracted by the thought that she nearly didn’t hear Lena’s words. “I thought the saying went give me strength.” She teased, arching herself up on her tiptoes, arms spread out wide.
Kara wheezed, avoiding Lena’s gaze for a good two minutes before finally replied: “If Rao gave me any more strength, people would seriously fear me.” she shrugged. “I figure I should give someone else the chance for strength… However, I could use some patience.”
“Exercise your denial, huh?” Kara gulped at Lena’s words. “You’re a jerk.” She announced, laughing as she came closer to her girlfriend, a hungry look in her eyes. Eyeing her as Lena backed away, smirking. “You’re not being very polite and patient now, y’know.” Lena teased, her eyes darker and glinting with obvious desire.
“I’ll show you some denial, if you want.” Kara offered offhandedly. Kara listened for the tell-tale of her girlfriend’s arousal. And sure enough, there it was: Lena’s breath quickening, her heart beat faster. Everything was going according to plan.
“But what if I don’t want to be patient?” Lena whined, allowing Kara to pull her body closer to hers. The blonde’s abs touching the bare skin of Lena’s belly had her quivering, wanting more.
Kara grinned toothily. “Then you should have thought about that before teasing me allllll day!” She dragged the word out as she picked her girlfriend up, much to the woman’s surprise, and threw Lena over Kara’s shoulders.
“Kara Danvers! You put me down right now.” Lena shrieked, laughter evident in her voice. She couldn’t hide that it was making her more turned on though, the show of obvious strength her girlfriend had.
“Mmm, okay. Whatever you say, my love.” Kara unceremoniously dumped Lena onto the bed, relishing in Lena’s indignant shout.
“Okay, wow. I’m going to work out from home for the rest of my life.” Lena announced as Kara climbed over Lena, moving to straddle the brunette. They shared a heated kiss.
“Mm, love you.”
“I love you too, you absolute horndog.” Lena replied casually, letting hands drift over Kara’s abs with a shudder.
Betty Cooper had shown up at Veronica Lodge’s door unexpectedly one afternoon. It wasn’t one of those rainy day scenes like in the movies, no. It was just an average day. But there was something different. The air had changed between the well known best friends last night, they’d shared a moment.
It was all Betty could think about. Finally, when Veronica opened the door, Betty blurted out the first thing that came to her mind: “If my wishes came true, it would be you.” Elegant? Yes. Stolen lyrics from Taylor Swift’s new album? Also yes.
Veronica’s face fell. The unspoken words between them had finally been worded. She couldn’t run from it anymore. “Betty I-” Please take it back. Her father had barely even accepted Archie… this would be too much for his already weak heart to handle. It was far from her first time falling for a girl but back in New York Hiram Lodge didn’t go looking for faults.
“I don’t know what to do with that.” All the things that had been done to Archie while they dated- she couldn’t sit by and endure that again.
“I know.” Betty herself wished she’d been braver--- brave enough to tell Veronica when she had actually had a chance in hell for it to work out. “I know that I’m terrible for coming out about this— about everything— when the timing is so bad. But I can’t keep pretending anymore, V. I don’t want to keep pretending.”
Please don’t make me keep pretending. It was the unspoken plea between them. After everything that had happened with the boys in their lives, Jughead... poor Archie.... Betty knew that it was a bad idea, at the best of times.
“You and I both know this isn’t fair to either of us.”
“I know.” Veronica echoed Betty’s words from before. “I just … i don't know if I can do this.” She whispered, though somehow she was still stepping closer to Betty— an invisible string pulling her to the other.
“Try.” Betty urged her. “Try and let me in. I won’t desert you.” She vowed. “I’ll be the love you needed all along. Everyone always says how perfect I am, and you know I don’t believe them. But I believe in you. And I believe in us. We could be so good. I could be so good. At loving you. But… only if you wanted me to.”
A pretty blush covered Veronica’s cheeks at Betty’s words. “Okay.” She whispered. “I’ll let you love me.” She agreed finally, stepping closer again. They were inches apart now. Betty closed the final distance between them at Veronica’s words. Her hands sunk into dark hair, as they kissed not for the first time, but it was… it was beautiful. This was a kiss of hope, promise. A vow to each other.
“And hey.” Veronica whispered as she pulled away, slightly— their foreheads resting against one another’s.
“Mama!” Brandon Foster came running into the house one morning after school had been let out for the day. “Mama, are’cha home?” The third grader called out. Stef looked up from her place at the table. “I’m home, love. What’s up?”
“No mommy, mama!” Brandon enunciated the word carefully. He’d been given the right to call Lena ‘mama’ in the first grade, but he couldn’t help getting so much joy every time he was allowed to say it again.
Daddy didn’t necessarily like the name, but that was okay. He knew Mom did, and so did Mama. Two versus one! Right? Besides, Brandon wanted to call her mama. She was there every night. She helped him with homework. She’d earned the title.
“Ohhh, well love, she’s not home yet. Is there something I can help with?” Stef felt herself get a swell of pride then and there, as well. She loved Lena, and now that things were going steadier, and steadier, she hoped they’d be able to stay that way. Forever.
“No, I want a mama sandwich.” He explained. It’s something he’s been wanting in increasing amounts.
“Well I can certainly call her. And then, how about we count cars until she comes home?” Stef suggested gently.
“Yeah, please. Then we can all cuddle!” Brandon beamed up at her.
“Good idea.” Stef dialed the familiar number now, touching the numbers as if by heart. She placed her phone up to her ear. “Hey babe, Brandon wants to know when mama will be home.” She cheerfully said when Lena picked up the phone.
“I’ll be home any second now. You’re on bluetooth speaker, love.” Lena answered. “Tell him I should see him ‘fore he sees me. I’ll be there in a sec, love you, bye!” Only after Stef returned the sentiment did Lena hang up the phone.
“Okay, cuddle bear. Mama says she’ll be home in just a second. And….she said to give you as many kisses as possible! She loves you a bushel and a peck.” Stef set to work on doing just that, covering her son’s stomach in kisses. He laughed.
“Yay! Come on, mommy. Let’s go wait on the couch.” Brandon said at last after he’d caught his breath. Stef nodded, scooping her nine-year-old up in her arms and walking into the living room. “Oof, baby boy. You’re getting so big.” Brandon rolled his eyes, laughing again until he heard the familiar sound of the door opening.
“MAMA!” He bounced off the couch he’d been placed on, and ran into the foyer. Sliding with his socks on, he rushed over to Lena until he was picked up. “Hi mama.”
“Hi there, lovebug.” Lena let out a little laugh, putting her keys and purse on the coat hanger before she walked into the living room. Brandon hung off of her like a koala. “You okay, Brandon? Have you had a big day or something?” Lena asked as she set herself down, cuddling into Stef’s side with a quick peck on the lips.
“Yeah! We have an art project.” Brandon confessed. “Stupid homework assignment.” he complained.
Stef looked over Brandon’s head to Lena in alarm. What’s the project?
“Oh, are you doing that already, honey?” Lena asked, clearing her throat to hide the lump in it.
“We’re doing a family tree, Mommy.” Brandon told his mother. “I don’t wanna. Most of the kids only have one or two parents, but I have THREE and there’s nobody else like me and what if they all laugh?” He said in a rush.
“Nobody’s gonna laugh at you, babe.” Lena promised. “They’ll be sent out to me if they do.” She reminded him gently, as she was still the vice principal of the school.
“Oh honey, your mama’s right. No one’s gonna laugh, I promise.” Stef brushed her lips over Brandon’s forehead. “Do you like having three parents?” she asked. Lena held her breath.
“Of course I do. Mama is the best! Next to mommy.” he allowed at Stef’s pretend glare. “I don’t want to change anything.” He continued. “I just don’t want the other kids to make fun of what I get to have.”
Lena exhaled heavily, but smiled beatifically. “I love you too, sweetie.” She was so happy to hear how Brandon felt about the whole arrangement. “We’ll sort it out, okay? Don’t worry.”
set in a world where Kara is sure that Lena hates her.
Lena is sure that the reporter is uninterested.
Here's how that turned out.
read it on ao3 here.
It wasn't like Kara necessarily hated Lena Luthor. No, she actually quite admired the startup CEO. Thing was, she was pretty sure that Lena Luthor hated her. Every single time that Kara's boss, Snapper Carr, forced Kara over to Lena's office (L-Corp) to interview, Lena seemed red and uncertain what to say. Maybe she was just nervous, but that was definitely not the feeling Kara got from it. Even when Kara began to speak to Lena, tentatively like she was a mouse squeaking up to a cat, Lena would mimic her stutter, or perhaps she was simply nervous herself. But that was a ridiculous thought for the Ice Queen herself. She would never get nervous over a mouse like Kara Danvers.
This time, however, when Snapper demanded that Kara go over to the L-Corp building and get a quote about Lena's new prototypes of watches --- they were deemed Hopeful, as if it were helpful but....with a twist. Rao, Kara hoped she wouldn't stammer that way in front of Lena. Last thing she needed was to make Lena's product seem dumb to Lena herself. Anyway, back to the watch. Ms. Luthor had managed to get the watch that talked back to you, like a Siri, but without all the corporate stealing your data and Google trying to sneak into your thoughts and anticipate your next move. Hope was, simply put, a helpful voice who would do a number of things for you.
That was stuff she could tell Lena right? Talking up her product like that wouldn't be offensive to her, surely. Even if it did sound rather....picturesque for a reporter. In Kara's defense, she was still new at this part. Oh, maybe THAT'S why Lena hated her so much! Because CatCo kept sending the rookie to meet with her. Oh, it all made so much more sense now. Hopefully, and that was a big hope she had there, if that was all the problem was, then it wasn't with Kara herself. Kara hadn't somehow offended the pretty lady who was a multimillionaire with connections everywhere. Lena could RUIN Kara if she misstepped.
Gulping now, Kara went into the office where she saw Jess, L-Corp and Lena's personal secretary. "Hello Ms Haung, I'm uh, I'm here to see Ms Luthor again?" It came out like a question. Kara immediately winced. "With CatCo." She coughed out. "I have an appointment---" she promised.
"I know, Kara. Not to worry, Ms Luthor is ready to see you now." Jess interrupted with a kinder smile than what Kara was expecting. "By the by, how are you enjoying all of the fl---" This time it was Jess who got interrupted. By Ms Luthor herself.
"Ms Danvers," Oh, there was none of the stuttering today. Just a polite smile, one that showed all of Lena's teeth. Maybe it was a little offputting. Maybe it was more than a little. Okay, so Kara needed to get a grip. "How lovely for you to join us again." She nodded towards her office, indicating that Kara should follow.
Complying immediately, Kara gave Lena her best smile. "Thank you for having me again." She managed not to stutter as well. Rather proud of that, yes, but well, it was deserved. She didn't need to be made a fool of again in front of a beautiful woman. That's just --- cruel.
"I assume you're here to discuss Hope, today. Unless...." Kara nodded before Lena could finish the sentence. "Yes Ms Luthor, sure am!" She beamed up at the woman, only to see Lena's face falling. Just for a split second, and then she was professional once more. Kara wondered how she'd mucked up this time.
"Great." It was a singular word, so how the heck did it have that much force behind it? To be fair, Kara supposed the woman saying it was a force to be reckoned with as well. Ms Lena "Never stand behind a man" Luthor. L-Corp was way too amateaur for Lena's capabilities, but Kara was not going to say that. Kara was not going to say anything else wrong. She wouldn't!
"So what made you decide to make Hope in the first place?" Kara pulled out her notepad and sat, only once Lena did the same.
"My mother, actually. My biological one, make sure you clarify that." Lena corrected herself. Kara nodded, making a show of writing it down. Lena cracked a smile before sobering up. "As I'm sure most of CatCo by now knows, I've been recently reunited with Mum in the first place." She bit her lip and Kara had only a second to wonder what that would taste like if she did the same before Lena was speaking again. "If I had been wearing a Hope watch on, or if she had, we could have found each other faster. Never been separated at all ---" She broke off. "When I finally did find my mother, it was not before she'd had a fall in her tub."
Kara looked up sympathetically, wondering how she would have felt if Eliza fell. "I just want to make the world as safe a place as posible, especially after what Lex did." Lena shrugged quitely. "Can't you understand that?"
"Can't imagine if my mum lost her footing whilst she was in the shower. I'm glad yours is okay." Kara said gently. "Mine wears Hope now as well." She offered.
"I'm honoured, though I hope she never has to use it for that kind of thing." Lena responded genuinely. It was the longest conversation they'd had without being stuttery and nervous (angry?)
"So um, I take it this wasn't a plot to overthrow Google and the other companies?" Kara quirked a smile at Lena.
"Definitely not. Just wanted some safety for my mum." Lena agreed softly. Kara nodded, writing that down on her pad as well.
"Do you have any other questions for me, Ms Danvers?" Lena asked formally at last.
"No Ms Luthor, just about done here." She promised, writing down the last few notes she'd wanted to put in her article. "The article should be up on CatCo's site tomorrow, and come out with the newspaper on the next day." Kara added. "Assuming Snapper doesn't call it too biased."
"Biased?" Lena raised an eyebrow. Shoot. What had Kara done?
"Oh, um. You know, because I like you so much!" Kara blurted. "I mean--- your work! It's fantastic. And I'm so happy you got reunited with your mum, I'd kill to be with mine again, and---"
Kara was cut off with a shaking hand placed on her arm. When she looked, it was Lena's. Her eyes were softer than she'd ever seen.
Impossibly green. Beautiful in a way that Kara had only noticed in her dreams. And now they were getting...closer to her face. Scrutinizing her.
"You said you like me." Lena whispered. It didn't sound like she was opposed to the idea, merely in disbelief. "You like me?" She repeated as a question when Kara said nothing, too afraid to voice her feelings.
Kara nodded fearfully. "Listen, I know you probably think it's insane. And you probably hate the idea, I mean I hate it too, sometimes." Kara said in a rush. "But even when you're mocking my stuttering, or saying things that are kinda hurtful like.... well it doesn't matter.... but anyway I promise I'll stop coming by! I won't let Snapper deter me from having an opinion on the matter this time, I promise!" She said with wide eyes.
"Wait a second." Lena spoke in a wondrous voice. She was still looking at Kara as if she were Santa Claus. "You think I hate you?"
"I mean..... I'm not sure what the right answer is here." Kara confessed.
"An-and that when I start to stutter, that I'm mocking you?" Lena looked crestfallen. But dawning was starting to show in her eyes, and Kara definitely liked the way it made them glow.
Kara nodded nervously. "I'm sorry. Have I got everything wrong?" She asked, her eyes nervously following Lena's fingers as they began to wring anxiously.
"Uh, yeah." Lena nodded affirmatively. "Very wrong. So wrong. I'm like..... in awe of how spectacularly wrong we've both been." Kara looked up at her, confusion glittering in blue eyes.
"What do you mean?" Kara asked at last.
"I am in love with you, Kara Danvers." Lena stated in a serious voice. "And I have been ever since you first walked into the office with your cousin and you weren't even a reporter yet, you were just convinced in my goodness. How could I not love you? I'm always so nervous around you that I can't help but get shy and stutter, or say the wrong things. I just want to impress you, Kara. That's why I sent all those flowers--- and then you just... ignored them, so I thought, fine, she's not interested. It's no big deal. But now you say you like me and I'm...."
Kara cut her off by very literally launching herself over Lena's desk and kissing the ravenette. It was a mistake and one that they'd both paid dearly for, but they had a lot of missed time to make up for. She slid off the other side of Lena's desk, crawling into her lap as Lena pulled her even closer, they were sharing the same breath when Kara finally pulled away for clarification. "You sent me flowers." She asked, running a finger over Lena's lips. "And you thought I ignored them. I never--- I didn't get any."
Lena looked both crestfallen and relieved at the very same time, and also just a little like she'd been thoroughly ravished. "You didn't get them."
"No. I assure you, I would have noticed them." Kara promised, stealing another, slow and serious kiss as she wrapped her hands around Lena's neck.
"I sent them to Ms Kara Danvers..... at CatCo." Lena looked confused, but when she received the second kiss she relaxed into it.
"The entire office only recognises me as Kiera. They probably, uh, they probably got thrown out when no one realised it was me." Kara confessed. "It's an issue I'm working through."
Lena let out a soft laugh, looking relieved. "Well then, KARA Danvers.... I'd like to treat you to lunch. Maybe have some more kisses too." She bit her lip. "Is that something you're interested in?"
"Very much so." Kara promised. "And I'd like to take you out for dinner. And give you a lot more kisses then, too." Kara murmured as she pressed kiss after kiss on Lena's face, all over the adorable, blushing cheeks.
"I like the sound of that." Lena admitted. "Maybe I can meet.....whoever is in your life."
"As long as I can meet your mum." Kara hummed. Lena arched her neck.
Kara had hardly noticed Lena’s entrance into the living room. That was the first clue that something was wrong. “Mm, good morning.” Lena murmured, stepping over a blanket to get to her girlfriend. “Rough night?” She asked sympathetically as soon as she saw Kara wincing at her touch. That never happened, so it was obvious something was wrong.
“Yeah.” Kara managed. “There was a fire.” The words whispered into Lena’s belly as she turned to face her. Kara wrapped her arms around Lena’s waist as well, understandably needing that touch from Lena. Lena, for her part, stayed quiet, humming as she ran hands through her love’s hair.
“Mm.” Lena offered, showing attention to her girlfriend’s words. “You do smell a bit burnt.” She tried to see Kara’s sunny smile. It unfortunately didn’t work. “Kara? Darling, what is it?” She whispered, pulling the blonde away just enough to push her head up to look at her.
“I couldn’t save the daughter.”
Kara hadn’t said it very loudly at all, but Lena heard it nonetheless. Her heart broke in half for her girlfriend and the mother of the daughter. “And how many people did you save?” She quietly questioned.
“Ten, but…” She trailed off at Lena’s gesture to stop. The universal sign of holding your hand up. But when Lena did it, it was always accompanied with the famous Luthor eyebrow. Any other time, it would have made Kara smile.
“You did the best you could, Kara.” Lena promised, giving her a short kiss on the forehead. “I know you hate it, but you can’t save everyone. It’s unfortunate, and I hate it too. But you can’t blame yourself for not being perfect, Kara. You certainly don’t let me.”
Kara sighed, leaning back against Lena. “I know… It just makes me wish I could do more, you know? I know you know.” Kara amended, sighing again. “You’re a force of good, as much as I am. You know that, right? I’m pretty sure you’re the true Paragon of Hope.” She whispered. “You keep me going, my love.”
“I love you too.” Lena smiled, beaming down at Kara. “Now, why don’t I tuck you back into bd, and you let me make you some banana pancakes?” She suggested, humming as she leaned down, kissing the Kryptonian on the lips.
“I think that sounds like a great idea.” Kara admitted. “You’re really too good to be true, Lena Luthor. One day, somebody’s gonna wife you up.” She warned, grinning. She allowed herself to be pulled up to full height, only a couple inches taller than Lena. The two shared another, slow kiss before Lena led her to the bedroom with a laugh on her lips.
A few minutes later saw Kara being literally tucked in by Lena. First came the blankets that they shared, so Kara would be soothed by the scent of Lena’s perfume. Lena fluffed her girlfriend’s pillow up. And then, Kara moved to pull the weighted blanket on top of her. It was fifteen pounds, but Kara moved it like a throw blanket.
“Show off,” Lena muttered playfully, smiling over at her. Kara laughed. “It’s not my fault.” She stuck her tongue out at Lena. “Alright, I want my pancakes.” She hummed as she tapped Lena’s nose. “OK, OK.” Lena laughed. “Be patient. It’s gonna take a few minutes for me to make the batter, and then even longer to make enough for you!” She warned.
“Alright. I’ll try not to waste away.” Kara teased, pulling out the book she was currently reading from her side table’s drawer. Lena rolled her eyes. “I’m sure you’ll be fine, Ms. Danvers.” She threw back. “Mm, whatever you say future Mrs. Danvers.” Kara retorted with a wide smirk. Lena whirled back around from just outside the room, mouth open and spluttering.
“Future who now?” She asked at last once she regained her composure.
“Like I said, Lena. Someone’s gonna wife you up one day.” Kara shrugged. “Now shoo, I want my pancakes."
Ship: Stef/Lena (mentions of past Stef/Mike, mentions of Brandon.)
Set pre-show, an AU about the first time Lena is called ‘Mama’.
Read here on ao3.
The first time it happens, Lena Adams is convinced it’s a fluke. Doesn’t think much of it at all. Actually, that’s a lie. When little Brandon Foster came running up to her, fresh off the bus, shouting a cheery, “Hi Mama!” she can do little other than think about this for the rest of the entire day. It was all too easy to wrap her arms around his tiny body, squeezing him tight to her for a hello hug before he followed his class the rest of the way into school.
She kept thinking about it, him, and his mother the rest of the day. Suffice to say that not much work was done that day. Instead, she fretted over what Stef might say, whether or not the ex-husband even knows about her yet… Lena bit her lip, trying to banish the thoughts as she went over paperwork. It didn’t quite work. Instead, she found herself toying with the idea of taking a break to call Stef herself. Maybe it’d be better that way? To hear it from Lena herself. She wasn’t sure.
“Ugh,” She muttered to an empty room.
Finally giving up around noon, she picked up the phone. Dialed Stef’s number, and took a deep breath. “Hi love, do you have a minute to talk?” She asked as soon as she heard Stef’s lovely voice greeting her.
“For you? Maybe even two minutes.” Lena can just picture the slight smirk on Stef’s face as she says it, too. She laughed, fondly shaking her head even though she knew that Stef couldn’t see it.
“So, something interesting happened this morning at Brandon’s pick up.” Lena could immediately sense Stef’s panic, realising that she’d used the wrong terms. “Nothing bad. At least, I don’t think it’s bad? He’s not hurt!” She added in a rush.
“Start with ‘he’s not dead’ next time, would you?” Stef teased her in response. “Is this something you’d rather talk about in person? I can pick you up for lunch in less than five.” She offered, sensing the serious tone this had taken within seconds.
“That would be great. We’ll have like, half an hour.” Lena warned. “But I would like to see you, definitely. I’ll meet you outside.” She promised.
“Great. See you then, babe.” Stef responded, letting Lena add a goodbye before hanging up.
Lena went about straightening her desk, then filing some papers. Once done with that, the assistant principal made her way out of the office so that she could meet Stef outside. She took a couple of deep breaths as she waited, leaning against the brick wall.
“Hey beautiful.” Stef greeted her a few minutes later with a kiss.
“Why hello there,” Lena replied, smiling against the other woman’s lips. They joined hands and made their way to Stef’s car with quiet small talk about how their mornings had gone.
“So what’s up with Brandon? I’m dying to know. Is he okay? Did he trip and will now have a bruise in the shape of an angel on his cheek for the rest of his life?” Stef guessed, nudging Lena.
“No no, nothing like that!” Lena laughed, smacking her girlfriend’s arm playfully. “He um, he called me mama? And I wanted you to hear it from me first. I didn’t tell him to do it, obviously… Stef, say something.” She bit her lip.
“How do you feel about that?” Stef asked instead of a direct answer. Lena wanted to hit her again. More painfully.
“I— I mean, you know I love that kid. He’s a beautiful, smart little boy. How could I not?” Lena ran a hand through her hair, nervously. “But I don’t want to encroach on your territory, y’know? And I… I’m not even sure I want to know what Mike thinks about me at this point,” Lena ruefully added.
“I’m sure Mike will see reason. Eventually.” Stef offered. Lena gave her a look, and so Stef continued: “Look, it’s certainly not what I expected to happen today, either, but it is what it is, right? At least we are dating, and not like— just hooking up or something.” She pointed out. “Could be way more awkward than this, babe.”
“You’re right. So does this mean…?” Lena bit her lip, watching Stef closely.
Stef leaned in, hugging her girlfriend tightly. “Welcome to the family mama.” She murmured in Lena’s ear. “We’ve been waiting on you for so long.”
