Mark The Date In Your Calenders!!!!!!
VERY IMPORTANT NEWS FOR EVERY DOCTOR WHO FAN
So incase anyone wasn't aware one of the regions, like Brazil and the US, outside of the UK that has a substantial Who following is China. Unlike the former two though China has it's own bespoke merch line and, for whatever reason, they market the show like it's Miffy or Hello Kitty.
They're so adorable, I love how Eleven looks completely Gormless and Ten looks infuriating to talk to. Both are very accurate
Twelve's attack eyebrows and Fifteen's Moustache are so cute too.
Continuing with my costume nerding, here are some photos of the TVM costume on display at a con (could have been either Gallifrey One in 2012 or LI Who in 2014) from @thedoctorswardrobe on Instagram, in which the lining of the coat can actually be seen!
I had thought it was brown, but that’s lighting for you, and on the skirts it doesn’t appear to be a satin or lining fabric, rather something textured; the Instagram post suggests it’s a quilting cotton with a raised pattern. It’s not common to use cotton to line coats like this but it could have been chosen because the designer liked the pattern, or possibly to add some extra weight to the skirts. You can see in the last photo that the same fabric as that on the lapels has been used for part of the body and presumably the sleeves, possibly a satin but definitely a more slippery fabric, which is required for the garment to be able to slide on and off easily; if you use cotton to line sleeves it just catches on whatever you’re wearing underneath. Unusually, the facing on the skirts extends an inch or so further than normal on a frock coat.

anyways, I'm still so angry over that Deadline article about Disney nuking Ncuti Gatwa's era of Doctor Who because of "woke" (not even kidding), because they received "overwhelming" feedback that the show was "too woke" for international audiences. It will never not piss me the fuck off how woke was/is literally aave for being politically aware that's been so co-opted by white establishment conservatives that this bastardised co-opted colonised concept of "woke" is now weaponised against Black people, people of colour and other marginalised people to justify casting us down and out. A literal fuckinf alien was played by a Black gay actor and old white people lost their shit and now a 60 yr old show is basically dead because some white people hated they weren't being directly pandered to. I'm never not gonna be pissed the fuck OFF

that is true, thank you big finish doctor who actor chris walker-thomson
I feel like "the Doctor often thinks of his human friends as pets whether he realizes it or not, which leads him to make decisions for them and disregard their agency because he is from an ultra fascist spacetime empire, and he will often internalize that he is a detriment to their lives"
and
"crucially, the Doctor is wrong about this because his companions are his friends who choose to travel with him despite the danger the Doctor's lifestyle poses because they love him and he loves them, and he is more at home among humans than time lords"
are two truths that coexist

Experience the Eighth Doctor's debut in stunning 4K and well as a whole host of special features.
They're *finally* remastering the 1996 Doctor Who movie starring Paul Mcgann from the original film, not just to upscale everything, but make it the correct FPS and pitch for the first time in decades!🩵🩵🩵🩵
Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor (1996 & 2022)
An unearthly child, her grandfather, and two teachers.
I think one of the reasons the 70s UNIT era managed to feel so much more anti-militery than the current depictions of unit, apart from the Doctor's interactions with them as he has way too much trust and faith in the current unit, is that Kate has so much more power than the Brigadier ever did.
Currently (I haven't watched twbtlats, this is just from the main show) although Unit's funding is dependant on public opinion, Kate has a ridiculous amount of power when it comes to getting not only the British government but also governments all over the world to listen to her and accept her being in charge in emergencies.
With the Brigadier on the other hand, he may be in charge of Unit but so much of his role in the 70s stories is
a) trying to convince the higher ups to either take action, or not take action, and he very rarely succeeds. Or
b) trying to assert Unit's authority as an international security force with emergency authority over local/national governments and also failing often due to legal technicalities or again orders from higher ups
The Brigadier is usually focused on saving civilians and can pretty often be (eventually) persuaded to consider the aliens' side or to stop or at least delay violent action.
The show isn't depicting the Brigadier as being evil for being part of the military, instead it's very cleverly depicting the military itself as being bad by showing the Brigadier as a (mostly) good character, but due to being in the military is both unable and also unwilling to disobey direct orders from those who do want violence.
So many things could have gone better if the Brigadier was ever willing to disobey orders he disagrees with, but he's not, even for the sake of the Doctor and even when presented with all the logic of why he should, and why it would save lives. He'll try literally everything he possibly can to change the minds of those giving orders, or find loopholes, but at the end of the day, he's a soldier and he'll follow orders.
That's why it feels so much more anti-militaristic despite Unit being some of the main protagonists because it depicts the military itself, and the obedient mindset of those in it, as the bad guy. And it's pretty clear that when the Unit protagonists have to obey orders because they're in the military, it's a bad thing!
Present Unit on the other hand feels more like "sure they still mess up occasionally but look! Now the Doctor has an army and soldiers on his side, who have power over all governments, making it much easier for him to win! This is a good thing and the implications and ethics will not be explored!!"
