With Valentineâs Day coming up, hereâs a reminder: Chocolate is toxic for dogs and cats!
Prevention is easier than cure, so keep all chocolate safely out of their reach and make sure that everyone in your household, including kids, knows that feeding your pets even a tiny bit of chocolate can kill them.Â
Hereâs what to do if your pet ate chocolate:Â
1. Access their condition. Are they showing any of these signs?
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Drinking excessively
Hyperactivity
Pacing
ShakingÂ
If they show any of these symptoms, itâs best to take them to your local veterinarian or veterinary emergency clinic as soon as possible. They already show signs of chocolate poisoning! Grab the package of the chocolate, so the vet can look at the ingredients. If you donât have a package, tell the vet the amount of chocolate your pet ate, which kind it was and whether it was filled with anything (nuts, raisins etc.).Â
2. If they behave normally and donât show any of these symptoms, call your veterinarian and ask for instructions. Make sure to tell them the information mentioned above. Listen closely to any advice they give you.Â
Please remember this! Onions are also toxic!Â
dont get yourself a cat if:
youre not okay with them sharpening their claws on the side of your bed, your couch, your cushionsâŚ.. NOTE: you CAN teach them which spots are okay to scratch on, but if youre going to punish them for doing whats natural to them, dont get cats
youre not okay with them counter surfing. either be sure to go through all the training needed to make your cat understand whatâs expected of them WITHOUT punishing them or dont get yourself cats
youre going to declaw your cat. dont fucking declaw your cats
youre not okay with cleaning the litter box or having them out in the open. NOTE: while some cats are okay with automated litter boxes and litter boxes that are built inside a cabinet or come with hoods, one negative experience can require you to swap out not only the litter but the box itself. in which case youll have to sacrifice your sensibilities for the well-being of your cat. if youre not ready to do that, dont get a cat.
you care about your decor more than you care about your catâs well-being and natural needs. cats need high places to perch on, and they need surfaces to climb on. NOTE: it IS possible to get fashionable and pretty climbing trees and cat shelves etc. but those cost extra money. either be willing to put that money towards them, or resign yourself to the fact that your perfect interior design might be disrupted by cat necessities.
youre not going to take care of your catâs natural needs pointblank. cats are way more high-maintenance than dogs are: as mentioned above, they need high places to perch on, they need places to hide and sleep in, they need objects to scratch, they need toys to keep them active so that they wont start acting out. if youâre not willing to âcatifyâ [what is this ?]* your home, dont get a cat
youre going to get one cat only and youre not going to play and spend time with it. cats are social creatures, not solitary. they NEED attention and social grooming to be healthy. even if youre busy with work or tired, you can AT LEAST say quick hello to them while passing by and let them hang around you while youre at home. catsâ behavioral problems like knocking things off shelves are usually a sign of them wanting your attention/having too much energy/being lonely.
youre not going to do some homework on how cats ACTUALLY communicate with you and what their behaviors mean and what they need to be healthy and happy. cats are not dogs. in my experience most problems people have with cats are caused by them not knowing the first thing about how cats communicate and expecting them to do so in the same way as dogs. learn how to interact healthily with your cat or dont get yourself one.
youre going to let them be outdoor cats. while there IS some exceptions to the rule, if youre cat is a normal house cat, either build yourself a cat patio, modify your balcony so you can safely let them hang out in the fresh air or harness train them. thereâs a lot of conflicting views on this but imho if youre willing to let your cat outside unsupervised despite the fact that it could be killed by predators/people/vehicles/accidents/weather/etc without there being a damn good reason for you doing so, youre an irresponsible owner and the cat would be in better hands elsewhere also, before my notifications and inbox are flooded by angry people: there is nothing your cat cannot get as an indoors cat that would make letting it outside worthwhile. you want it to eat raw meat ? feed it raw meat. theres lots to choose from, and by buying what humans dont usually eat (chicken hearts, fat, tendons etc) itâs usually very cost-efficient as well. you want it to get fresh air ? again, cat patio, balcony, harness. you want it to eat grass ? grow it some grass and other non-toxic plants inside for it to chew on. you want it to get exercise ? climbing trees and cat shelves. imho the only situations where having outdoor cats is acceptable is if you have a wildcat colony that youre taking care of or if your cat has a health condition that makes being an outdoor cat the best choice despite the risks.
anyway, these are just the things that i could think of off the top of my head, feel free to add to this !

This is to help you understand how to react to different positions and postures of your cat. If you react according to their mood, they will be happier over all. To get terror, threat, worry, and fear away, make yourself smaller, and close your eyes. Reach out, but donât touch them- just allow them to sniff you on their terms. Allow them to explore you. Do not make sudden movements or loud noises. This could take weeks! You need patience. Cats will often hide in new environments, especially with other animals, or children around. Always provide a high place for them to observe, and they will come around on their own time. Trust me, theyâre worth the wait.
