“I can’t do this.” Helen tried to keep her voice steady, but it was nearly impossible. She hoped the strain would be covered by the sound of the waves crashing below them, but Aline knew her too well. She could sense when Helen was upset, even when she was trying hard not to show it.

“Baby.” Aline moved closer, wrapping her arms around Helen, brushing her lips softly with her own. “You can. You can do anything.”

Helen relaxed into her wife’s arms. When she’d first met Aline she’d thought the other girl was taller than she was, but she’d realized later it was the way Aline held herself, arrow-straight. The Consul, her mother, held herself the same way, and with the same pride — not that either of them was arrogant, but the word seemed a shade closer to what Helen imagined than simple confidence. She remembered the first love note Aline had ever written her. The curves of your lips rewrite history. The world is changed because you are made of ivory and gold. Later, she’d found out it was an Oscar Wilde quote, and had said to Aline, smiling, You’ve got a lot of nerve.

Aline had looked back at her steadily. “I know. I do.”

They both had, always, and it had stood them in good stead. But this —

“This is different,” Helen said. “They don’t want me here –“

“They do want you here.”

“They barely know me,” Helen said. “That’s worse.”

Can we talk about how right when JonxMarisol became officially canon CASSIE KILLED JON. Um are you kidding me, I loved seeing their relationship build in TFSA and seeing Cassie just kill him off absolutely destroyed me. When I saw that they would be mentioned in this book I was really exited but I was not expecting that.

LOS SPOILERS When reading LoS, we find out that Robert Lightwood's exile was lifted because of the Mortal War. If Jia does not become the new inquisitor will they lift the exile off of Helen with the upcoming events and possibly a war in QoAaD?

Hey! I was just wondering in Lord Of Shadows, does Mark ever kiss Emma in front of Julian? Or does Emma know that’s going to far for poor Jules 💕 I really love their relationships and I guess I wanna see a possessive side to Jules like storming away etc etc though I’m aware he doesn’t seem like that type. I just have so many question to ask but not enough time. I’m so excited for you book release and next week I start reading Lady Midnight for the third time before Lord Of Shadows comes out

I guess I would say that Julian is the kind of guy who keeps his feelings bottled up. He isn’t the sort to throw jealous fits, or to stomp away — there’s a brief scene when he gets angry about something in front of Emma, Cristina and Mark, and you can see how shocked they all are that he’s letting his anger be visible and how much it throws them until he shuts it down.

We do see into his head, though, and we do know what he’s thinking — and of course when people who keep things bottled up finally explode, it’s quite something.

Hi Cassie, i was re-reading tid for nth time (thank you for Will, by the way, he's been a huge help during my teen years) and i was curious about the angel feather in cortana's hilt: is it because of it that cortana "can cut anything" or the feather is an additional "trick"? Thank you so much and CIAO from italia!

It’s a big part of what gives Cortana it’s special powers, and is the reason Cortana is able to do something in LoS no other sword has ever done.

Hi! So CoHF it's mentioned that faeries don't allow other faeries to address them by their real name and I was wondering how that works? Like what's the point of someone having a name that nobody uses? And is there a reason behind that? Also in the interview you recently posted, you said that faeries aren't immortal. So is time going differently in Faerie the reason behind them being centuries old eventhough they're not immortal or is it some magic they have to perform or smth?

The idea that faeries do not allow others to call them by their “true names” is part of faerie folklore (which is why you will also find it in, say, Holly Black’s faerie books.) From the Wikipedia entry on True Names:

According to practises in folklore, knowledge of a true name allows one to affect another person or being magically. It is stated that knowing someone’s, or something’s, true name therefore gives the person (who knows the true name) power over them. This effect is used in many tales, such as in the German fairytale of Rumpelstiltskin: within Rumpelstiltskin and all its variants, the girl can free herself from the power of a supernatural helper who demands her child by learning its name. In the Scandinavian variants of the ballad Earl Brand, the hero can defeat all his enemies until the heroine, running away with him, pleads with him by name to spare her youngest brother. In Scandinavian beliefs, more magical beasts, such as the Nix, could be defeated by calling their name.” 

The point of the name that isn’t used is the power vested in it. You can use it, just as it can be used against you. You can demand entrance using your real name, or a hearing in front of the King/Queen, or rightful ownership of a thing. Kieran isn’t Kieran’s true name; “The Seelie Queen” is obviously not her real name either. Kieran is however still his name, it’s what Mark calls him and what everyone calls him. Kieran Hunter when he’s in the Hunt, Kieran Kingson when he’s in the Unseelie Court. 

Faeries are not immortal, but they are very long-lived and age slowly.

Was rereading CoHF when I noticed that the Seelie Queen said that no faerie would allow another to call them by their real name, wondering if we will ever find out Kierans real name?
