one of my favorite fic authors sends out christmas letters + a small printed ficlet every year and it’s honestly one of my favorite holiday traditions, receiving that letter. and like, I was thinking how I would love to do the same

How do you introduce another person into your story in a school AU?

There are a handful of ways!

The transfer student. “Hey, I dropped a class to take this one instead but I’ve been going to this school the whole time.”

The new student. “I’m new to school and my backstory could range from a financial need to military family to a promotion or more! Endless possibilities and cliche, but effective!”

The mutual friend. “We both know [x] and they are either having a conversation or an event that we are both involved in.”

The project partner. “We both have this class and we haven’t talked before but we’ve been paired up to work together so we have to now, I guess.”

The casual introduction. “You passed by me, said hello, or something similar that was quick and you can get more to me later!”

tips on writing a high school au set in new york, from a high school kid in brooklyn (lookin @ u, avengers fic writers et al)

there are hundreds of high schools in new york. your characters are not going to be attending a school called ‘brooklyn high’ or ‘manhattan high’. this is not high school musical. ‘east high’ does not exist. 

there are little to no open spaces in a city high school, unless theyre indoors. no football fields, unless youre going off campus. probably no swimming pool unless you hop down to the y a mile away. most high schools have a gymnasium and some bleachers though, so ur gay af chars can kiss under em but they wouldnt be sheltering from the rain or w/e

unless they go to a super fancy schmancy private school and have the dough to pay for it, these kids arent gonna take a yellow school bus to school. think city bus, subway, walking, biking, or uber cars. 

no seriously the only school i can think of that gives kids a yellow school bus is NEST+M and even then the kids have to pay a fare

u want ur kids smokin cigs or drinking or otherwise obtaining products legal for adults and illegal for teens? have them hit up the smunion market in brooklyn. corner of smith st and union st. dont tell anyone i told u

the gowanus is a cesspool, literally. nobody is gonna hang out there unless they want radiation burns

when thinking of the way you want your fictional school to be designed, think UP not OUT. ive seen all yalls sprawling suburban schools stretched out over like, MILES of country road and lemme just say,, what the fuck

thats all ive got so far hope this is helpful i just saw i lot of urban fics sounding VERY suburban or rural and i could not let that stand
