03 of 05 - Modern Compendium, Part 9 - Megami Maria Lionza An amalgamation of several different figures from Christianity and indigenous Venezuelan and African mythology, Maria Lionza is a goddess of love and harmony with a difficult and complicated history. She’s actually one of three main figures in a largely nameless shamanic religion which is extremely popular in Venezuela. It bears some similarity to Santeria, in that it combines aspects of shamanism, Christianity, and native cultures. Personally, I find Maria Lionza particularly fascinating because her religion is one of only a few that not only survived Western colonization attempts, but actually managed a little bit of reverse colonization. See, when the Catholic Church failed to eradicate belief in this goddess, they actually beatified her, naming her Santa Maria de la Onza, meaning Saint Mary of the Jaguar. Which I thought was a nice little, “Okay, we can pretend we won now,” from the church. :P Anyway, Maria Lionza is usually presented as a muscular, powerful woman holding a female pelvis (a symbol of fertility) and riding a tapir, which provided some unique and fun symbolism to work with. She’s also our first Megami, which in the Modern Compendium will be dedicated to demons that fit the “Mother” role in the three faces of Eve trinity. For more information on this and every demon in the Modern Compendium, take a look at our burgeoning Data File, right over (here).

Nostalgic - by Ariff Razalin I know Aries folks aren't fans of looking to the past. However, if there's a word that might describe me the best, that word is "Nostalgic". It has been like that my entire life, but I acknowledge Nostalgia grew stronger as an adult. Not sure if being a writer has something to do. Giving a lot of value to memories, documenting them on paper or on camera, letting them speak for themselves when spoken words might fail... I don't feel comfortable looking back. I prefer to work on building new memories... But it's hard to ignore the value of the paths behind... -KJ
"Add a huge hug." Highly appreciated ♥.
I know it’s trendy to fight the system and cry that we are all becoming slaves of technology, but this attitude overlooks that computers and phones are tools for communicating. When someone thinks I’m an idiot smiling at a machine, I’m actually smiling at my girlfriend who is 10000 miles away and whom I would have never met if not for these newfangled electronics. As they say: when the wise man points to the moon, the fool looks at the finger. This is a topic that I’ve been wanting to tackle for a while now; much credit to this excellent post for bringing it to the front of my brain.

Been thinking about Skull Kid and Majora’s Mask. The more I think about it, the more I realize what a wonderful game it really is in context of the series. It’s a game about alienation, loneliness and the importance of friendship, and in its own strange way it just may be the saddest and most personal Zelda game.
Vivo en El Trópico (Sep. 2013) - by KitsuneJey Walking under the rain wearing a raincoat and an umbrella, sheltering anywhere that could be an observation post. That's my afternoon today. Every time I stop, I think, I remember, and I dream... I got a smartphone instead of a notebook, and my fingers do the writing in silence... Suddenly, I think of Totoro and the Catbus. I think of Japan. I think of the Midwest and Asia. My mind is a cup of tea far from being empty. Drops of water fall on the screen, activating menus and commands... My surrounding reality interacts with the digital frontier for a second. A heart yearns for overcoming limitations and frontiers. The rain stops. No trace of Totoro or the Catbus. I'm a kid that must keep walking. -KJ
Reporters worldwide are grappling with government censorship and limits to reporting. Some are even accused and convicted of activities against governments that are landing them in jail. In the past week alone, the following reports have been made: An Egyptian blogger has been convicted of insulting the president. In China, most mentions of the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre were censored from the Internet. Turkish protesters accused media of ignoring unrest; reports of anti-press attacks amid Turkey protests raise questions of censorship. Congo Republic suspended four independent newspapers Burundi enacted media law that reporters say curbs press freedoms. Guinea media set strike after government shuts opposition radio. The Palestinian Authority arrested the general manager of a Bethlehem radio station. Ethiopia arrested a reporter after he covered the story of evictions in dam region. Toronto Star reporter was arrested and ticketed after taking photos of injured public transit employee. Imprisonment of journalists worldwide reached a record high in 2012, driven in part by the use of charges of terrorism and anti-state offenses against reporters and editors, reported the Committee to Protect Journalists in its annual census of imprisoned journalists. CPJ video summary of the 2012 report on media imprisonment:

Toby Ng - The World of 100 Have you ever asked yourself, what would the World look like as a small community of 100 people? Probably not. However, it is something to think about, as the reality would be startling - as much as you’d think so, the village would only have 7 computers, and only 1 person in the World Village would be educated at University level. These facts are something that designer Toby Ng has thought about very carefully, and turned the results of his findings into a series of twenty infographics depicting ‘The World of 100’. Although aesthetically beautiful, with sharp lines and bold, vibrant colours, these infographics are often horrifying. The posters look as though they have come straight out of a children’s book; is this to mirror the naivety of those that are most likely to be looking at them on their computers?
“Look, this is the World we are living in.”
