small enclosed space, no escape while it's locked and moving. forced proximity
power: to move, evade, escape. and to race against time.
danger: the latent potential risk of an accident - or deliberate crash; a car can be a weapon.
the extent to which that power, danger, and associated responsibility belongs to whoever controls the car.
shelter, but limited shelter. you can sleep in a car but it's not exactly comfortable. you can use a car to prolong survival in an extreme environment, but not always for very long.
hiding: so few places to hide (or be hidden)! but a (cramped) hiding spot can be contrived...
familiarity: most readers are familiar with cars, so they're easy to imagine and fun to recontextualise.
personal touch: they can belong to a character and be very much their personal space. you can tap both the intimacy + vulnerability of having someone else enter your space, and the power you hold within it
environmental/prop-based storytelling: you can tell a lot about a person by their car!
i'm just gonna say . bloodstains. whumpee either being kidnapped or rescued but either way they're on the run being dragged between vehicles and their pursuers are busting open their last vehicle (left abandoned in a parking lot) just barely too late and finding drops of dried blood on the seats. smears of blood on a steering wheel. whumpee shoved into the boot or footwell and the floor is already crusted with it
uhhhh you can make your characters get car-sick đ yay!
restraints during recovery. medical bands to keep them still because they really do need that IV, and if they keep pulling it out, they'll be sedated. team brawn holding a thrashing, terrified whumpee, two arms braced across their chest so they can't hurt anyone. putting the chains on for a cover up, for an act, but slipping too far into the mindset they had as a prisoner, counting the scratches on the metal. gagging a whumpee to keep them quiet during escape. muzzling a starved vampire because they can't feed until it's safe. restraining a recovering whumpee and watching their eyes glaze over, like they never left.........
⢠Sleep can function as mental bondage. If you're asleep and can't be easily woken, you're completely helpless and vulnerable. If you're sufficiently drowsy and out of it, you're still basically helpless, but with the added bonus of potentially being somewhat aware of what's happening.
⢠The many ways to be forced to sleep -- surgical drugs, chloroform rags, hypnosis, sleeping spells and potions, tranquilizer darts, hidden sedatives in food or drink...
⢠The onset of sleep can be quick, barely giving you time to react before you're out, or so gradual you won't even realize what's happening until it's too late (and everything in-between).
⢠Uncertainty -- being put to sleep against your will, not knowing what will happen to you while you're defenseless. Being carried away as you fall asleep, not knowing where you'll be when you wake.
⢠The fight to stay awake, because it feels like something you should be able to fight, to overcome with enough willpower, but...
⢠The inevitability of being put to sleep. You might not feel the effects of the drugs or magic right now, you might feel wide awake, but sleep will be coming for you.
⢠Heavy eyelids fluttering and straining to stay open, drooping and closing all by themselves.
⢠Confusion and disorientation as the drowsiness sets in.
⢠Floating in and out of consciousness, perhaps just able to hear people discuss you or feel them handling you.
⢠Deep hypnotic sleep where your conscious mind is shut down and your subconscious is utterly vulnerable to suggestion.
⢠Glassy, dazed eyes with nothing behind them -- your eyes might still be open, but you're still fast asleep.
⢠Sleepwalking, wandering around in a trance, unaware of your surroundings -- or perhaps your sleeping mind is following someone else's commands...
⢠Memory gaps and not knowing what happened while you were sleeping.
ahh temperature dysregulation. whumpees who can't get warm under three blankets, wearing four layers and that extra thick pair of socks, huddled away in corners where they can conserve their body heat; on the other hand whumpees who can't for the life of them cool down, swallowing and exhaling a hot breath, head tilted against the nearest wall, listless and exhausted and sweaty. water bottle pressed to their forehead, hair stuck to the side of their face, sun beating down without mercy.
Whumpee still biting and snarling at Whumper but they're now flinching whenever Whumper moves too fast
Refusing to scream but now letting out whimpers
Whumpee glaring at Whumper the whole time as they get on their knees.
Snapping back at Whumper constantly but immediately shutting their mouth when Whumper brings up a specific punishment
Still tugging on Whumper when they're dragged to the torture room but now also going limp when they eventually reach their destination
"For fuck's sake can you just give me a break for one day? Just one fucking day." "Hm, before you would have shouted at me the entire time. Now you want a break? My my, you've changed Whumpee." "Yeah well, I don't like getting beaten. That's all."
Whumpee letting out a loud, desperate, "NO!" when Whumper suggests they should be whipped before they immediately shut their mouth and look away.
⧠Broken ribs suck. You donât just âwalk it off.â Breathing hurts. Laughing hurts. Existing hurts. Characters with rib injuries wonât be doing heroic sprints.
⧠Concussions arenât instant naps. Dazed vision, nausea, dizziness, maybe even personality changes, but theyâre not going to collapse neatly like in the movies.
⧠Blood loss is sneaky. Itâs not just about dramatic pools of blood. Itâs dizziness, confusion, and the body getting cold as circulation tanks.
⧠Adrenaline lies. Someone can take a serious injury and not feel it until the fightâs over. That âI didnât realize I was bleeding until laterâ trope? Very real.
⧠Twisted ankles are brutal. One bad step and suddenly running is off the table. Even walking hurts like hell. Perfect way to ground a chase scene.
⧠Burns linger. Even small burns hurt more than most people expect. Blisters, infection risk, constant pain, itâs not just a cool scar later.
⧠Dislocated shoulders = useless arm. Characters canât keep swinging a sword or firing a gun. Theyâre basically fighting one-armed until itâs fixed.
⧠Shock is a thing. Pale skin, trembling, rapid heartbeat, and eventually disorientation. A character might not even realize how bad their wound is.
⧠Stitches arenât magic. Getting sewn up is painful and recovery takes time. Theyâre not instantly battle-ready after a needle and thread.
⧠Scars tell stories. Some fade, some donât. Some stay sensitive forever. Donât forget the aftermath when the wound becomes part of the character.
WHUMPTOBER is a month-long, prompt-based creation CHALLENGE (think: Inktober, but whumpier). There are four prompts for each day of the month, giving 124 for you to play with! There is also a list of 18 alternative prompts that can be subbed in for any day to give participants as much creative freedom as possible.
All prompts are meant to serve as inspiration without being taken literally (e.g. you donât have to include the exact wording of prompts into your work). Feel free to run rampant on interpretation. For example, if the prompt is âflame", you could create something with reference to a candle/campfire, your character could have suffered a burn, or the flame could be a reference to an âold flameâ - an old relationship. Itâs truly down to you!
You can produce work in any media you choose, including but not limited to: writing, visual artwork, photo/video/audio edits, paper crafts and elaborate recommendation lists (not just a list of links). You can participate as much or as little as you want (i.e. you donât have to do ALL the prompts if you donât want to) and prompts can be used in any order. They are also free to use even after the event ends.
Please make sure to read the Event Info and FAQ carefully, as most of your questions will be answered there already. For everything else, you are welcome to come to our ask box or ask questions in our Discord server here.

the teamâs mission didnât go to plan. countless injured, dozens killed, the enemy still at largeâ a failure in its entirety. Leader, inevitably, blames themself.
back at headquarters, they work nonstop. moving from place to place, giving orders, taking calls, checking on injured teammates. even when the fighting is over, thereâs still so much to do.
Leader approaches Right Hand to update them on the situation. words tumble over one another as they try to remember everything they need to say, so afraid of forgetting anything because itâs their job to clear up the mess theyâve made. the least they can do is try and make up for the damage they caused, the chaos, the lives they couldnât save.
then Right Hand interrupts. they put one hand on Leaderâs shoulder, lean in close and ask:
They get tied up and gagged while Whumper takes their belongings
They just wait for it to be over until they realize that Whumper isnt just taking valuable stuff.....they take Whumpees clothes and Hygiene items aswell
They are not robbing Whumpee they are packing for Whumpee so Whumpee can " move in with them"
⢠falling asleep fully clothed, possibly with jacket and shoes still on, legs/feet hanging off the foot of the bed or sprawled half-on half-off a couch
⢠the âoh shit, iâm gonna faint/nevermind iâm goodâ face (and aborted grab for nearest solid object or person)
⢠a character losing their footing for a moment on rough terrain. someone reaching out to grab them so they donât fall and they both hold on for a hot second
⢠closing their eyes and leaning into a gentle touch
⢠shaky hands, shaky voice
⢠falling asleep at their desk at work/tucked away in an odd place
⢠doing things that are out of character & having others start to notice: losing their cool, being extra chipper or extra quiet, jumpy
⢠zoning out
⢠someone getting between them and whoever theyâre having a heated exchange with, gently pushing them back with a hand against their chest or shoulder
⢠slipping out of sight from the others to lean against a wall, tip their head back and close their eyes
I love when they mistake the gentlest character for the most terrible villain and unnecessarily extreme force is used to imprison them.
They are locked away with every precaution; dozens of guards, restraints of every sort⌠They are treated as uncommonly dangerous with maximum security when in reality, they could never harm a soul.
That feeling of having multiple unfinished WIPs but youâve hit a mental block and canât seem to complete that next chapter in them but suddenly a different storyline pops into your head for an entirely new fic and all you wanna do is write it but what about all those other WIPs youâre already neglecting that people are waiting on and youâre just gonna push those ones that you do love but canât seem to write right now to the side to start a new one? You canât do that but you fear if you donât write something then youâre gonna write nothing and god you really wanna write SOMETHING
âIf you obey, Iâll give you a little treat.â
âYou look so good on your knees.â
âDid I say get up? Stay.â
âRight now you belong to me. And my possessions do not address me with such a tone.â
âDo not touch them. Theyâre mine.â
âHold still. Easy there. I didnât mean to hurt you that badly.â
âStop whimpering. You know that pisses me off.â
âIâm going to beat you senseless and then youâre going to thank me for the lesson when you wake up.â
âGo on, clean my boots. Noâ not with your hands. Thatâs itâŚuse your tongue. Good.â
Whumper grabbing them by their shirt collar. âYou think youâre anything without me?â Whumpee snarling. âIâm what you made me. And I bite now.â
âGive me your weapons and stand with your face to the wall.â
âWaitââ
âNo begging, no screaming. If you lose count of the number of lashes, Iâll start over.â
