I want to comment that at this point, this man’s city just went through chaos, and suddenly these groups of people waltz into your town, aids you in the damages aftermath, and then suddenly an alert that THIS thing is coming back to know, wreck havoc to your home and it’s bad. This thing had killed his parents and it’s out for more blood.

Then one of the stranger, the one you just met a while ago and shared drinks by the way, just hear this thing that’s never been stopped and went “Hell YEAH, I’ll go and fight that train! Wouldn’t be the first time I killed one!” (If you played the Omega Questlines)

Remember he just MET us, but no one else is going to fight that thing so WHY NOT?

Yeah you can get your buddies, the more the merrier, to fight this train, it’s called the Doomtrain by the way, and he will drive the transport for you while you duke it out with the train.

Now speaking of the train, I want to note this train likely sees us, and the train Lumull’s driving in a way that we are intruding in its territory.

Another train on its turf?! That’s a no-no. Of course it’s going to destroy it, only one train can ride the tracks and that’s this thing.

Note also he has to keep mainly focusing on ahead and can look back in times he can, so he is blindly trusting us that we can kill it while it knocks away the carts. He doesn’t know how strong we are, has no clue if this will really work because the outcome is he dies or probably his sister gonna kill him. What he has to lose? He’s terrified, this thing is a war machine that terrorized everyone and taken many loved ones.

Yet his ass is going to sit on that conductor’s seat, drive that train no matter what damages are taken, and pray the thunderous heavens you will succeed or die trying.

Dude has massive stones.

I can't be the only person to think that Dawntrail is a sort of homage to King Lear, right? Someone else must have brought this up first, I'm sure. But from the central conflict (an aging monarch deciding how to pass his crown on to his three children), and the underlying themes of reason versus strength versus love, I feel like there's a lot of parallel, even though the direction the plot takes isn't exactly the same.

I don't think it's a stretch to equate Wuk Lamat with Cordelia--the youngest daughter, the favorite, she has the least to recommend her as heir (Goneril and Reagan's husbands being already accomplished and favored by the king).

In a weird way, Zoraal Ja and Bakool Ja Ja both get to play Edmund and Edgar, despite Zoraal Ja being one of the three children of the king. Bakool Ja Ja is both illegitimate as an heir, for not being of the Dawn's Promise, and simultaneously the true heir, the only Blessed Siblings in the bunch, historically the only contenders for the throne at all. Zoraal Ja is a trueborn prince, and also not, since his birth was never supposed to happen, and he isn't two-headed like his father. He gets Edmund's anger over the circumstances of his birth defining him in spite of literally being seen as the most legitimate heir.

Even Edmund's speech on astrology and nature feels like Zoraal Ja and, of all possible supporters the palace seer constantly telling him that his success is destined and natural while he feels like he's been isolated and overburdened by both.

I think it's an interesting inversion that Gulool Ja Ja does not ask his children to prove who loves him the most, but rather, who loves Tural the most. A challenge that, just like for Lear, one of his three kids has no possibility of passing.

Reason and madness being recurring themes in King Lear feels again very on point for Dawntrail. The loss of his reason pushed Gulool Ja Ja to make his children prove themselves worthy of the throne, and ultimately leads to his own death. In the patches, Calyx is the personification of reason taken to the point of madness. Sphene, who bears the title of Reason, isn't. She has neither strength nor reason, only love, and thus becomes the sort of dark mirror for Wuk Lamat.

And now we have Halmarut, once more the voice of nature and reason, assuring us that of course this evil is just the way the world works, you would understand and accept it if you were only reasonable...

A day late, but Gulool Ja Ja is the same kind of bad parent Cahciua is to me. Both obviously loved their children and their children loved them. However, based on the text and subtext we get in Dawntrail, they struggled with other aspects of parenting and actually understanding and meeting their children’s emotional needs.

Facts we can infer about Gulool Ja Ja through what Dawntrail chose to share and not share:

1. GJJ didn’t effectively mentor his children to be future rulers of their country

The entire concite of the Rite of Succession is about “crafting” a leader fit to rule Tural after he dies. I’m not even going to humor what the story could have been if he raised an effective heir from jump. The story we got is about crafting a ruler because he did not teach them how to rule all these 20+ years he’s had the chance.

2. GJJ didn’t teach his children about the country they rule, the country he loves so much

During the first half of Dawntrail, the trials given to us are largely educational in structure. They are designed to teach the claimant about that culture and their traditions. Largely we are shown that the claimants lack knowledge of each group of people we’re introduced to. They don’t know how they operate or the significance of their cultural practices or the history of how and why they joined beneath GJJ’s banner. GJJ didn’t think to educate any of his children on their own people even a little? No? Some dad.

3. What the fuck happened to Zoraal Ja?

Hot take but people don’t want to commit patricide out of nowhere. I wish ZJ was explored more in Dawntrail. His character had so much potential for depth and nuance. Even just one extra scene with him could have been great. Instead all we can do is look at the subtext.

ZJ was being crushed under insurmountable pressure. Through his comments about “the miracle” and the missing head in his corrupted monster form, we know this weighed on him heavily. Why didn’t GJJ do anything to help him? Did he say kind words to ZJ? Did he try to take the weight off? Did he try to steer ZJ down a kinder path? We’ll never know because we barely see them interact before ZJ is killing GJJ!

4. Didn’t tell them their other dad died

The dramatic reveal was effective and I audibly gasped. HOWEVER… that was messed up. WTF Vow of Resolve?

in conclusion

Gulool Ja Ja is a bad dad. Now, as I’ve said before with Cahciua, being a bad parent is not a moral failing and it does not mean I think they’re a bad character. Characters can be good people and also bad parents, and this makes them more interesting as characters.

If GJJ was a good parent we wouldn’t have had the plot we got. I just wish the story explored his character flaws more.

Anyway, I’m just saying if Thancred is on thin ice then GJJ should also be on thin ice, thank you for coming to my TED talk, peace.

I don't read a lot of meta so there is every chance that this has been discussed before but my new ffxiv conspiracy theory is that the Garleans are an Allagan creation.

Reasoning:

Not being able to manipulate aether is an incredibly unusual trait for any creature on Hydaelyn considering that like fish can do it.

There is no mention of a Garlean equivalent on the First. (This can be explained away by the Flood but we are noting this as part of the larger picture here, ok?)

The origin of the people who would become the Garleans is said to be Goug, a Clockwork City. The Allagans were well known for their clockwork soldiers. (Note: The Gougians "abandoned" their clockwork city.)

The Gougians/Garleans eventually settled as peaceful farmers in Corvos and were forced off the land by the magic wielding races of the area. This information is obviously suspect given that only the Garleans seem to corroborate it and this is their basis for their imperialism, for now, note that the only other race known to be active in the area for certain is the G tribe of Miqo'te.

The Garleans have no problem using Allagan technology. This can also be explained by Emet-Selch but given how into bloodlines and bioengineering the Allagans are I think it's worth keeping in mind.

In the Bozja storyline, Gabranth is both said to have been researching Garlean ancestory and to have found "lost knowledge" about the Allagan Empire. Adding in the fact that he wants to establish a new nation in Goug....

Thus I propose:

The Goug were a product of Allagan bioengineering that were to serve as a labor/slave race (like with the Ixal.) Their inability to manipulate aether would have made them reliant on technology and thus ideal to have doing maintenance on machina.

The Gougians got run of the Clockwork City after the Allagan Empire collapsed. Being an island in the post-apocalypse, they lacked the resources (and possibly the magical prowess) to maintain it and are forced to abandon it for the greener pastures of Corvos.

The G Tribe, having been entrusted with the Allagan Royal Blood and a load of Allagan artifacts seem like the ideal people to get the Clockwork City up and running again. The G Tribe, who do not want Allag 2.0, refuse to help them.

Therefore the conflict that emerges is based around the Gougians wanting the Allagan artifacts and the G Tribe not wanting to give them over to the wrong hands.

The Gougians obviously lose this conflict and are forced north to the region that would later become Garlemald.

They are then easily found and manipulated by Emet-Selch, who probably knew of their origins from the get-go meaning that he is able to twist the truth into the story the Garleans are spouting now.

I do not know if I am right, odds are I've missed some things but tis a fun theory nonetheless :3

i was thinking about kefka/wol earlier. or rather, how it wouldnt really be kefka/wol, bc from his fourth wall breaking i think he is the monika of xiv who would be more interested in the player outside the screen than the character you play, since he can tell that its a made up person. and if you think about it based on how you interact w the game, the wol can be a character in the scenario, but they usually just represent the player when doing content, right. and kefkas existence is very much inside content. ultimate content, even. so a relationship w kefka has to exist in the form of content, in my opinion. but! content isnt just battle. there are many other forms of content players can interact with. you cant really top an ultimate for the ultimate battle content, after all, so itd be better to look elsewhere. all that is to say i was imagining kefka/wol fanfic in the form of a crafting macro or guide to catch the elusive kefka fish

Stormblood is mostly pretty good with setup and payoff but this plot beat is wild lmao like where was this during the early Ala Mhigo portion of the story.
