I can’t believe I’m going to defend anything related to, “A Bee Movie” but this is seriously not why she left him. She did NOT Leave him for a BEE- she did not, fall in LOVE, with a BEE.
Did the Bee fall in love with her? Yes, most definitely. They make it pretty obvious. Is that weird? Yes, yes it is. Did she fall in love with him? No, she only ever TREATED him as a friend. A friend she happened to click and get along with. Does that have romantic implications? No. WAs the ending of the movie a sign of being together romantically? No. Two friends working together does not mean they are “together.”
But back to my point. She did not Leave Ken for Barry.
From the very beginning we see Ken very self-involved with himself. He’s delusional. He’s made his Resume Into a Brochure and Listed things that no employer is going to care about into his list of skills. He’s loud, he’s taking center stage, just to talk and gloat about himself. Does this make him horrible? No. It doesn’t mean he’s horrible either, just- … off the wall and unaware that he’s not the center of the universe.
But after that, when He freaks out and tries to kill Barry, who, at the time, Vanessa only sees as an animal- he is absolutely stunned when she stops him from killing the bee. “I’m allergic!” He says. “He’s not hurting anyone!” She says. To her, life is important. She makes it clear she doesn’t like killing something, even as small as a bee, very clear. And Ken does not respect that, in her own home. He gets mad and takes it personally.
Later, we see him again, upset at her, and for what? Yes, she shooed him out during Yogurt night, but lets be real here. She’s recently learned Bee’s can talk. She has literally befriended a Bee. This is insane, this is crazy, this is WEIRD, but for her, probably also really cool. That and she takes a special interest because she’s clicked with the bee and wants to HELP HIM. So she’s making some changes in order to do that. And Ken again, makes it about himself- and disrespects her decision. He is absolutely, incapable, of handling a change in schedule/routine and refuses to see it outside of his own, personal view.
Then the scene of her kicking him out of her Apartment. After she has already made it clear, that this is her friend, that she does not agree with killing other life - animals or bugs, just because you are afraid of them. What does Ken do? Make an absolute Mess out of her bathroom trying to do just that. In her own home. A g a i n. He doesn’t care about her feelings or her beliefs. He only cares about his own. Which is jealousy.
The saddest thing here, is not that she sided with a Bee and kicked a man out of her apartment over it. It’s that A Man grew jealous enough over a Bee to make that big a deal out of it.
I’ll repeat. A Man. Was Jealous. Of a Bee.
- but yes, let’s just translate this as, “she loved a bee” and “left a guy for a bee.” Cause that was totally the point the movie was making here.
