NEW SERIES TO FOLLOW: A lovable tale of a necromancer trying to find others of her kind in a world that fears them. Bethany, the necromancer, is a naive but endearing character on a heroes quest. I am enjoying this series and I look forward to where it goes.

NEW SERIES TO FOLLOW: What is the story of the disciple that betrayed of Jesus of Nazareth? This dark story follows Judas Iscariot after he commits suicide over the guilt of what he had done. It is always very challenging to give a new and alternative perspective to a historical or biblical story, but Jeff Loveness does so very tactfully. A guilt-ridden Judas is approached by Lucifer who says that they are both victims of God’s sadistic plan. Should Judas feel shame and self-loathing if it was his destiny to commit this heinous act?

NEW SERIES TO FOLLOW: An African-American chain smoking reporter follows a story that takes her into a wold of black magic in 1970′s Detroit. Elena Abbott sticking it to the man as she fights to find the truth in a chauvinistic racist world. This a definite must read for fantasy, thriller, history, and mystery lovers. I was hooked on this comic from the very first issue and I can’t wait to see how it ends.

NEW SERIES TO FOLLOW: This intriguing story starts with aliens negotiating the development of a port on Earth that would serve the intergalactic community. Earth is viewed as a culturally and technologically inferior world that is only being given this opportunity because of it’s location in the galaxy. I love how this story reflects a lot of what is happening politically in the world today. I would definitely give this series a couple of issues to world build because so many things are happening in the story.

NEW SERIES TO FOLLOW: I am not particularly a fan of horror comics but I have to make an exception for this series by W. Maxwell Prince, Martin Morazzo and Chris O’Halloran. There is nothing more ominous than an odd man in the presence of children and this comic utilizes that theme. We follow the Ice Cream Man as he gives the kids of the neighborhood ice cream to then see darkness of their lives of these children. I find this brand of storytelling refreshing in the wonderful world of comics.

DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE WEEK: STARFIRE #8: I’m going to lead with a positive by saying that I have loved the artwork in this series from the first issue. So I’m giving a big thumbs up to all of the Artists that have participated in creating this project. I had my doubts about the progression of this series because it took a complete turn from Red Hood and the Outlaws. I understand the decision to make the story campy but I think they missed the mark. I am not against campy. I am huge fan of the ongoing Harley Quinn series. Where I find the Harley Quinn series charming, I find Starfire to be incoherent. There isn’t one writer in particular that I think has done a poor job. I believe the direction of the story and the characters in it are disingenuous. The characters are one dimensional leaving very little room for Kori to grow as she learns from them. I give this series a 4.
COMIC BOOK OF THE WEEK: CLEAN ROOM #1: I have always been a fan of Gail Simone. I read her entire run of Red Sonja Vol. 2. and Batgirl. Her characters have always been strong women that are witty and inspirational. I stumbled on to this new thriller series and Gail Simone has provided the same level of quality that she usually brings to the table. The mysterious Astrid Mueller and the tortured Chloe Pierce are the main characters of this story. As Chloe seeks to find the answers about her dead fiancé, Astrid Mueller holds secrets that may be too much for Chloe, or anyone, to handle. I look forward to reading this series monthly. I give this series a 9.
COMIC BOOK OF THE WEEK: THE MIGHTY THOR Vol.2 #3: "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor." These words hold a great deal of meaning in the new adventures of Thor. Jane Foster was revealed to be Thor at the end of volume 1 of the new series. She’s struggling through the effects of chemotherapy for breast cancer but she’s formidable when she wields Mjolnir. In this issue, she’s confronted by Loki with a proposition. This series has been compelling so far. Watching the Odinson, deal with the loss of his hammer and the birth of a new Thor has given the character depth. We see Jane sacrifice everything as only a true hero would. I give this comic a 9.5.
COMIC BOOK OF THE WEEK: STAR WARS DARTH VADER #15: The final segment in the Vader Down in story arc adds another piece to the Star Wars story. Vader thwarts the rebels attempt to capture him as he hunts Luke Skywalker. I am not saying that this is the best comic of the Darth Vader series but this story arc gave us a great look at the true power of Darth Vader. This was the first time you got to see Vader take down a whole rebel fleet single-handedly. You also get to see Luke receive guidance from Obi-Wan one last time. I give this comic a 7.5.
MISTBORN TRILOGY: This is one of my favorite fantasy trilogies. Scadrial is the world in which Mistborn takes place with a rich history and vibrant culture. The world grows exponentially from book to book. The idea of metals having a physiological effect on a certain percentage of the population is a unique concept. I love the traditional chosen one prophecy story. I also love the overlooked forgotten orphan becomes the savior of all story as well. The characters are all well rounded with their vices and virtues. The story is epic in scope and is truly the stuff of legends. I give this trilogy a 9
BEAUTY: I am a huge fan of this comic! Beauty, the comic, measures the weight of vanity against life or death. What is the price of beauty worth to you? Beauty, in the story, is a sexually transmitted disease that grants the infected a new more attractive self. Watching the effects of this disease on the community is a fun social experiment. Betrayal, jealousy, elitism, murder, and mystery are all huge themes found in this comic. If you have not read this series, you don’t know what you’re missing! I give this series 8.5
COMIC BOOK OF THE WEEK: LAZARUS #21: I have been reading Lazarus since the comic began. It’s had it’s ups and downs but it has been building to an eventual cataclysmic point. I was pleased to see the exchange of power in Carlyle family and the transition of Forever. The end of the Poison arc was action packed with a touch of resolution. The Carlyle family rules!!! I give this comic an 8
RAT QUEENS: An Elven mage, a human witch, dwarf warrior, and a halfling thief are the members of the notorious questing group, The Rat Queens. These foul-mouthed, drinking, fighting, promiscuous women are the best comic book team that I have read in a long time. Their adventures lead the readers through a world of magic, mystery, and mayhem. While these women kick ass and take names, they are also vulnerable. They are dominant women fighting against the sexism of their respective cultures. I give this series a 9
ROBIN WAR: The Robin War is a story arc that crosses the Bat Family comics. The Robin Laws has been enacted in Gotham and anyone wearing the Robin logo can be arrested. It’s been a while since I have been intrigued with a storyline as much as I am with this one. Not since The Night of Owls story arc. There is still one more week left for the story to be completed but I highly recommend this series. I give this series an 8
MORNING GLORIES: I have been following this series for 49 issues. It began filled with mystery and suspense. A group of teenagers from all over the world at a secluded boarding school with their teachers conducting sadistic tests on them, sounds like comic book gold. This series unfortunately falls far from the mark. As the story progresses, the reader is simply presented with more questions than answers. I have recently finished issue 49 which finally revealed a mysterious omnipresent that appears to be antagonist of the series. I was not at all satisfied because the moment was completely underwhelming. We still have no idea about the rules of this world, nor do we understand who these characters are. So at this point, you are not any closer to understanding what is happening. The redeeming quality of this comic is the beautiful art and color work. I give this series a 8
ROGUES OF THE REPUBLIC (TRILOGY): I love this series. I am giving it an honorable mention because I recently finished the last book in the series, The Paladin Caper. Patrick Weekes has successfully merged High Fantasy and The Heist genre. The array of characters are humanly flawed and relatable. Weekes has created a complex world that interweaves modern society issues with a very diverse community of humans and magic folk. His comedic timing between the Rogues is always on point. I highly recommend that everyone reads this series. I give these books a 9
PAPER GIRLS: This is a new series written by Brian K. Vaughn and the art is by Cliff Chiang and Matt Wilson. If you like chain smoking, trash talking, no nonsense taking paper delivery girls, then this is right up your alley. The comics does take an unexpected turn. There is a very “Night of the Comet” feel to this story. The girls are very likable characters and the art only compliments the theme of the comic. I am intrigued with the story and very curious about where it’s headed. I will give this series a 7
