IF THIS AINâT ME IDK WHAT IS I SWEAR đ
âWitches tend to be animists. The word animist refers to one who embraces the concept of animism. Animism is derived from the words âanimaâ and âanimus,â the Latin words relating to the soul, intelligence, and having a living nature. In the eyes of the witch, everything is alive, and anything with physical matter contains life-force and intelligence. For the witch, nature is alive. The rocks, the water, the wind, the animals, the plants, the stars, the planets, and all things that we can perceive as existing within the material universe.â
Psychic Witch, by Mat Auryn
What is animism?
Hey there! Long time, no see⌠I thought Iâd make a post today about animism. It pops up now and again in the witchy and pagan communities on tumblr - but I havenât always understood it. Recently, I started a research project for my archaeology degree, and it involves the idea of animism. Anyway, here is a little introductory post to the concept of animism.
Animism is simply the belief that plants, animals and natural phenomena possess a soul or spirit. It is present in many religions and belief systems, both past and present, and across the world. Some people take this further, perceiving many inanimate objects to have a spirit, such as language and words, or human creations like photographs.Â
In animism, all plants, animals, geographical features (such as rivers and mountains) and natural phenomena (such as fire, lightening or snow) all posses agency. That is, the ability to act or to exert their own will. Many also see all inanimate objects in this light.
As a belief, it is one of the oldest and most key belief systems. Evidence for animistic belief systems can be traced back to sites such as the Mesolithic site of Star Carr, and the Neolithic site of Catalhoyuk. Many indigenous peoples today also practise animism in various forms, as well as many neo-pagans. Offsets of a belief in animism can include ideas of shamanism and totem worship.
Previously, those studying animism saw it as a belief system of people who had no understanding of scientific principles, or who were less advanced. The study was inextricably tied up with ideas of colonialism and racial disparity. As such, many academics have since dropped the term due to itâs negative connotations. However, it has been used by many indigenous groups and neo-pagans to self-identify their own beliefs.
In neo-paganism, those who call themselves animists do so in the assertion that they acknowledge and respect the wide ranging spirits within nature and the earth - with which humans share the world. For some, these are depicted as (or understood through) deities or fairies. For others, they are simply the spirits of living beings, or non-human persons. Because of this, many pagans have a deep respect for the earth (seeing it as a living entity) and do not wish to harm it. Many pagans express these beliefs by thanking these spirits, working with them in their magic; or by being vegetarian/vegan or campaigning for a more environmentally friendly future. Alternatively, it may involve the use of animal products in spells to imbue them with that animals spirit, for instance.
For many witches or magic practitioners, their belief in animism is the source of their magic practise. Rather than seeing humanity as outside of, or opposed to nature and the earth (or owning it), we are inextricably part of the earth, and share in itâs spirit.
For me, animism means that I acknowledge the unique essence of every plant, animal, and natural phenomena. It is not that I believe there is an anthropomorphised spirit living within each tree, for instance. But that a tree expresses itâs unique spirit by how it lives within the landscape, and I can respect this by the way I perceive and interact with the tree. We all share in a common spirit or essence that is the earth, but we all express this in a way that is unique.Â
I know this whole post has made me sound like some crazy hippy sort, which I probably am, but please donât think I believe these things because I am ignorant or stupid - this is the way I choose to perceive my world. Anyway, let me know what you think of this post!
âDonât Work with Death!â
âDonât work with death, because then you invite it into your house.â
Death is already in my house. Death is everywhere. Death is what decays the plant matter that feeds my garden. Death is what feeds the herbs I use in my spells, for each grows from what died before it.
Death is what feeds my family - death of plants, the death of animals. I would not disrespect the spirits of that which feeds us by ignoring their sacrifice.Â
Death is the veil between my ancestors and myself, keeping them at rest and then acting as the gate for them to step into their next life.
When I do hospice work and sit with someone who is accepting their approaching death, I donât tell them death is something to fear or avoid. I tell them death is the friend that walked beside them, every step of their life, maintaining the balance of the world, and waiting for them with open arms, to escort them to rebirth.Â
âDonât work with death!âÂ
I would not ignore lifeâs partner, not for arrogance or fear or ignorance. When I go to my own, I want to greet death with respect, acceptance, and gratitude.Â
Helping the earth and animism go hand-in-hand, so I thought I would make a list of simple ways you can make a big impact. Even picking just one of these changes can help đż
Re-useable Ziplocks. There are times when ziplocks come in handy, but reusable ziplocks help the earth by keeping thousands of ziplocks out of the landfill(and ocean) and will save you money too. Get the dishwasher-safe ones if you donât like hand washing.
Make Your Lunch. Many people buy their lunch packed in plastic, but you can save the planet and your wallet by pre-making lunches. Tip: make extra portions when you cook, and freeze them. This way you have a variety of leftovers to choose from for lunch.
Re-useable Food Wraps. Replace plastic wrap with food wraps made from fabric and beeswax.
Re-useable Grocery Bags. Replace plastic shopping bags and produce bags with planet-safe options
Re-useable âPaperâ Towels. Cut squares of cloth and put them in napkin holders. When they are used, throw them in the laundry.
Wool Dryer Balls. Not only do these dryer balls help with static, but they also cut drying time, saving you money
Shampoo/Conditioner Bars. No more plastic bottles, and the bars often have more uses, saving you money
Eco friendly Toothbrush. Wooden or similar toothbrushes to stop plastic
Reusable Makeup Remover Pads. Just throw them in your bathroom laundry basket with your towels to save you money
Metal Razor. Shave with a metal re-useable razor to stop with the plastic, and, you guessed it, save money
Liked this? Let me know and I will do another one with more!

beginner witch here so if this is a dumb question iâm sorry but how do i go about charging a sigil/making it work iâve already made one that i love (using your sigil wheel post so thank you) what am i supposed to do next? thank you for all the help!!
Well there are 2 types of ways to make a sigil work.Hereâs a quick post on which method is best for what result1. Charging
Giving the sigil energy periodically to keep it working (think of it like charging an electronic)How:~Pouring personal energy into it   Place both hand on sigil and visualise your energy flowing from your body into the sigil
~Sun/Moon Energy  Â
Place the sigil somewhere it will get good exposure to sunlight or moonlight and the sigil will absorb the energy from that.   (Note: Sunlight and Moonlight have different magical properties, so you should look up what those properties are before doing this)
~Charged Water/Watercolour      Dripping some charged water (think sun/moon/storm/or otherwise charged) on the sigil.   Some people add watercolours to the water they plan to put on the sigil with an intention-based colour to drip onto the sigil. OR you could draw the sigil with these watercolours instead so itâs automatically charged.
~Tracing/Kinetic Energy      Constant movement on a sigil can charge a sigil. This can be done by tracing over it with your finger over and over again till you feel itâs charged enough or through other means like tapping it or putting it under something people regularly step on.
~Heartbeat      If you draw or tattoo a sigil on yourself that sigil will be constantly charged by your heartbeat.   You can also put a sigil youâve drawn over your heart or wrist somehow and as long as you wear it your heartbeat will keep that sigil charged
~Electronically
Have a sigil pulled up on an electronic screen while the device is charging
~Other      Thereâs thousands of unique ways to charge a sigil, the ones listed here are just a few, feel free to look around the witch tips on tumblr or try some different stuff yourself
2. Activating
Destroying the sigil with something that often creates a quick burst of energy, sending it out into the universe to be done.
How:
~Burn it
~Rip/Shred/Cut it up
~Stabbing it
~Ingesting it
~Flushing it down the toilet
~Let it blow away with the wind (if itâs biodegradable)
~Any way you can think of that destroys the sigil
Important Notes:
~Sigils can be used as spell components on their own
~You can charge and then activate a sigil for stronger results

Easy Tarot Cleansing Ideas
đŽ knock on the cards the times you dispell unwanted energy
đŽ set them outside/in a window during a new moon
đŽ pick the deck up and blow on it (as if you were trying to blow off dust) to send away old energies
đŽ feel you need a stronger cleanse? blow on each card individually
đŽ light a candle (black or white) or some Cleansing incense and set the deck beside it until it burns down
Easy Self Cleansing Spell
So, I posted this spell a couple times before l, but I canât find it. So here it is. I doesnât require candles, a big fancy ritual, etc. It only requires you. This spell is perfect for when you feel drained and need a boost, or if you have been around toxic people all day.
Now, normally, I will focus my energy into my hands, but I understand some people donât have energy to spare. And thatâs okay. Itâs about intent, lovelies.
Focus your mind as much as possible
Using your hands, begin at your head. Say âIn the name of the Divine, I cleanse my mind.â As your saying this as throwing all the negativity of you.
Cross your arms at your chest, âIn the name of the Divine, I cleanse my body.â Throw negativity to the ground.
Place hands behind your back, âIn name of the Divine, I cleanse my soul. Throw negativity.
Repeat 2 more times.
Say, âI send all my negativity to Mother Earth, that she may turn it into positivity for the good of all the Earth. So mote it be.â
If you are still feeling sluggish, you can repeat it again. If you feel like it worked, you should feel relaxed and weight lifted off of you.
Also, keep in my mind, this Spell can be tailored to individualsâ needs and beliefs. This was taught to me by a local witch who owned a store. She was veryâŚold school. Things had to be done a certain way, but Iâm not like that. I hope this helps! Merry meet!
i havent done any sort of witchcraft in idk how many months and im a little afraid to get back into it again because i feel like i have to cleanse everything but i dont feel clean enough to let myself touch any special items. do you have any tips for cleansing myself and lots of items or how to ease back into witchcraft?
First I want you to question why you âdonât feel clean enough.â Are you struggling with mental illness? If so, (or even if not) I need you to know that you are not tainted! What matters in witchcraft is your focused intention. If you can direct your energy into your actions/tools then youâll be fine. Just give it a try! If you still donât feel ready even after trying to just dive right in, go back to the basics and educate yourself. That may be enough to inspire and reassure yourself.
If you still feel you need to cleanse, I have a whole tag for cleansing that Iâll attach on this ask (edit: I canât attach tags right now for some reason so you can find my âcleansingâ tag in the post linked in my bio)
So, you wanna get started with divination? (Masterlist)
Well, I am hardly an expert, but I can point you in the direction of others who are!

Environmental Witchery
I would truly love to think itâs at the top of our to do lists to be good people. I would love to think that and also see it put into place. We can pray to our gods for others, we can (consensually) do a kind spell or sigil for them too, and itâs all well and good. But what can we do for the environment? I got you covered, letâs take a look at my many ideas on how you can be a conscious witch for natureâs sake!
But, Ariel, donât you usually use a million links in your posts? This is true, but Iâm writing this based on everything my amazing teacher taught me back in my Environmental Science class in college. Except without all the big science words because I didnât do great at that part, however, I did great at solutions and human theory, which is exactly what we want here. So, I encourage you so much to be inspired by this and look for more sources online! Never stop reading on what you can do to help the environment!
And without further ado, this is a quick stop of A-level Environmental Science by someone who cannot for the life of them remember terminology, woo!
Devote An Activity
Whether this be an organised beach clean up, picking up trash on a footpath, helping a charity store or a petition sign up, or any other environmental activity, devote it to your deity/ies! Just some examples would be going to a beach clean up and praying or just speaking in your mind to, say, Poseidon about how you honour him with this action.
Side note, itâs also a good meditative practice as you clean something up or fulfil a list/sheet.
Pick Organic
You guys thought this was just about shopping, didnât you? Well, it isnât, but I do want to say that if you can buy organic you should consider it because it means no artificial chemicals and fertilisers have touched the food. Farmers have to leave previously chemically-touched land to rinse itself and be scientifically declared ânaturalâ again before using it for organics, so when you buy organic, itâs a sign to farmers that itâs worth their time and money!
But no, this is about how you can make sure your plants are organic. Put down the chemical pest control and pick up your phone to research! Something as simple as a two foot board can keep out carrot flies, or planting marigolds and keeping coin or egg shell barriers can stop slugs. Thereâs alternatives and theyâre usually fun to learn about, interesting to undertake, cheaper for your wallet, and better on your little plants and environmental microcosm you have going on there.
Plant Cloning
So plant cloning can be easy or difficult depending on the species at hand, but for the most part all you do is take a cutting, snip it diagonally, and put it in water until it sprouts roots and can be planted. This is called micropropagation, but itâs also some pretty awesome green witchery if you ask me!
You can do this for your herbs so you donât have to buy more, which is good for your purse, but I also thought that if you consider yourself a good gardener with abundant native wildflowers nearby, or some in your garden, why not try your hand at cloning one? Native wildflowers are the absolute best thing for your native pollinators (did you know some wasp and fly species are also pollinators? Itâs not just bees!) Not only that but also native plants are a really good thing to encourage right now because in our current era weâre seeing the negative effects of invasive species. Rhodendrons are a famous invasive plant around the world because it just grows⌠All year⌠All the time⌠Swallowing anything in its path. It also happens with fauna species: Harlequin ladybirds, cane toads, west african giant killer snails (which Iâm sure wasnât the actual name, or was it?), european rabbits, and so on and so forth. Now, we canât fix the fauna part, but we can do our own little bit for the flora part. Also, if you manage to grow wildflowers, youâve beat my environmental science professor because he could never get them to survive in his garden, so props to you!
Create Habitats
This is a really great one you probably see people do all the time but never considered to be witchy. Buy birdboxes (or make some!), set up bee-friendly hives (have you see the nests you can get? Google!), but also consider actually leaving dead wood around. I can see the confusion you have right now, but hereâs the thing: a fallen tree is an ecosystem for all manners of insects. It creates another level of ecosystem within the bigger environment. For instance, if you go to a nature reserve, ever notice they donât cut the trees down at the same times? Forgive me, Richard (my enviro teacher), for I have sinned and forgotten the name of the method, but itâs done because it creates different types of environment. Where the trees are pollarded and light hits the floor, flowers may grow and that encourages certain types of fauna. Where the trees create a canopy overhead and the ground is left to be darker and cooler, it again attracts different species. In this same way, a fallen tree is great for certain species. Give it a little research and see what you could attract by leaving that log out a little longer!
Act Consciously
Iâm not even kidding with you: trampling is actually a really serious issue with environmental protection and reserves. It straight up makes it onto the Legal Quantative Sheet Thing that people have to fill out when trying to assess if the plans for the land are going to be a gain or loss. Itâs why you see designated footpaths and raised walkboards in SSSIs (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) and various other areas of designated protection. Itâs really important we think more about how our visit reflects the visit of many. To throw some Kantian Ethics in here, using one of the three maxims, we should think universally. This means we should assume when we do an action, it permits everyone else in the world to do it and they have also done it. When you walk off the boards which are clearly labelled not to, so does everyone else. When you litter, so does everyone else. Honestly Kantâs maxims are a really good way to encourage yourself to be a more ethical person. Just donât read too much into his whole ethical theory. Itâll hurt your brain. Anyway! Hereâs things to try to be more conscious of actively doing:
Pick up litter
Stay on designated paths
Use walkboards when provided
Step around flora where possible
If it says keep your dog on a lead itâll be because of the wildlife there - usually for safety both ways - so do so until you get to the lead-free zone
Visit the visitors centre to learn more about helping the site or what native plants they have
Donât practice activities banned in the area, as in fires or driving, because itâs probably because the environment canât take it
Just donât invade natureâs space, friendsssss
Donate A Little
Sometimes, nature runs low on funds. If youâve got ÂŁ2 for the charity bin to help your local reserve build a visitors centre, why not chip in? Visitors centres allow for education of the public and also visiting school groups. Itâs places like that that teach you information like this.
Pray
Simple one here, folks. In between the prayers to deities and thanks and wants or whatever you happen to pray for, pray for the environment. Yours or globally. Also pray for general world atrocities, but thatâs another post.
Compost
Literally everything made of some natural material is compostable somehow if you do your research on what conditions and so on, but at the very least all your vegetable peels and fruit slices can be left to one side to decompose into dead organic matter. Dead organic matter is like gold to plants because its natural nutrients which seep back into the soil which originated from the earth anyway! You get to decrease what you send to landfill whilst also giving a little home brewed offering to your plant babies.
Reuse and Recycle
Collect your candle wax to fashion into new candles, collect the ash when you burn things to put into your soil, when youâre done working with magic water, pour it into your plants, turn an old shirt into a braided witches ladder, and so on and so on. There is magic in putting time into fashioning a disused item into something entirely new, or in giving away what you no longer need. Iâm going to start calling this The Phoenix Rule and itâs going to be my new witch code as of now (15th June 2019, you read it here first, folks). This is about doing what you can to grow from your own ashes or plant something good out of something old.
Paper? Leaves
Do you find yourself using a silly amount of brand new paper for sigils or intent in spells? Start collecting leaves (or old newspapers and things!) and use these instead of brand new paper. In fact, you could match the folklore of the plant to your spell and sigil. Bay leaves for accomplishing dreams, oak leaves for wisdom and knowledge, there is endless possibilities. Start picking up those fallen leaves! Theyâre free and theyâre not using lots of water and chemicals to make them. Okay water, but water from the sky and ground that isnât excessively farmed and pumped from nature for the paper bleaching industry.
And I think thatâs where Iâll stop for now, but this is definitely not the end of all the things you could do to incorporate environmentalism into your witchcraft. And also, since it wouldnât be written by me without them, I found some articles to get you started on researching this all further if (hopefully) the eco flame burns on in you~
None of them are witchy because when you Google âEnvironmental Witchcraftâ itâs all some very angry blog posts about who even knows what. Zealots in one. Such strange people. Anyway:

witch tips #1 - lack of motivation
đ practice outside of your home, only if it is safe for you! sometimes a change of scenery is enough to get you in the mood to work!
đ read up on plants in your area, and if you can, take a basket or other container and go foraging! (just donât ingest things you arenât sure are edible!!)
đ if you have adhd, or are autistic like me, try incorporating your current hyperfixation into your craft! you could try creating a practical spell based on your favorite character, making a sigil, or even coming up with a new tarot spread!
đ spend a little while browsing the baby witch tag on tumblr, even if you donât use any of the information. just immerse yourself in a witchy mood until something sticks!
đ create your dream space for practicing your craft in a home design app, minecraft, the sims, or even just drawing it out! envision yourself practicing in it and/or do something small to make it more real!
đ challenge yourself to do some research on a subject you havenât practiced before and write a few pages in your grimoire about it! donât forget to reward yourself when you finish!
đ thereâs no rule about where to practice! try doing some spellwork in your bed or another cozy place! (be very, very careful with candles if you do this, consider using led candles or battery-operated tea lights instead!)
đ enchant your favorite food or drink with intent to motivate you and focus on feeling the energy as you consume it!
Davy Jones Heart Binding
To Put Away Affections for a Past Love
Word of advice: Â This is best done long after the relationship has finished, but the heartache remains. Itâs not wise to act hastily when emotions are running high.
What you will need:  - Sea water (real or self made)  -  Strawberry  -  Thread or string  - Clam shells, walnut shells, a natural/biodegradable container. Â
Slice the strawberry thinly (from top to bottom). Â Take one of the slices, make it more heart-shaped. Â Place it in the sea water. Â The rest of the strawberry, either eat it or feed it to someone to whom you trust your heart (current lover, family member, close friend). Â
After letting the strawberry soak for a little bit, remove it, place it in the container, and close it. Â The halves should fit together nicely. Â As you wrap and tie the string around the container, speak:
âI beseech the ocean, to wash away my pain Forever lock (name) out of my heart Our time together has come and gone Stay where you belong, in the past.â
Once youâve sufficiently tied it, you may bury the container, throw it into the ocean, or bury it on the beach. Â If you have to wait to bury it, keep the container in the sea water in the meantime.
If you happen to work with or worship an oceanic figure, feel free to place their name in the recitation. Â
