What if there are imposter Will-s out there in the academy? Instead of bumping into someone as Will, a clone observed a group who entered the maze from afar, until one was taken by the darkness, then borrowed their form and approach the group, integrating himself within it using a different identity. What if there are more Will clones in the academy just with different faces? We know the clones don't immediately recognize each other, Will would never know.

Do y'all think Will survived so long in the dark in the maze only because of his spectre's cloning powers? He just kept surviving by feeding clones after clones to the monsters, until one batch lasted long enough to bump into Montresor and one of them got lucky to be taken out of the maze alive. Because as long as one Will is alive they can keep doing mitosis right.
