The BASICS-Making Your Speech Treatments Great!

Speech therapists (and all you other wonderful ancillary services)- do you ever feel like your treatment sessions have become more "blah" than "AHA!"? If so, this post is for you. From time to time over the years I too felt like my work had become dry, or stale.  To combat this, I found several tried-and-true B.A.S.I.C. components you can put in each and every one of your therapy sessions to turn it from "meh" to "HOORAY!"  Not only will YOU find the missing joy in your work, but your STUDENTS or CLIENTS will benefit and recognize the value you provide as well. Whether your patients are in the same room as you, or online and many miles away, including these B.A.S.I.C. components in every session will improve the quality of your therapy.  If you work with children, or with adults, utilizing these B.A.S.I.C.S. will change the way you think and do therapy. These B.A.S.I.C.S. work for both short sessions with short length of stays, as well as long sessions over an entire school year. The B.A.S.I.C.S. are: Be successful. Start the session with an exercise or activity that is "easy" and utilizes "errorless learning." Errorless learning is a technique that ensures the response is always correct. As it was for everyone worldwide, 2020 was a year of loss.  People lost jobs and whole industries were erased.  Public events and social groups came to a halt.  Traditions, routines, and time-honored holidays became unrecognizable. Healthcare Took Center Stage. Although healthcare took center stage, it too was served a devastating blow, leaving gaping holes in service and needs unmet.  Health care workers struggled to survive the torrential rains of information, and to stay afloat in the tsunami of urgency and demand. With Loss Comes Change, However.  As One Door Closes, Another Door Opens. The field of speech pathology experienced this cycle of loss and change as well.  As a speech pathologist in a medical setting, I saw firsthand how experience, norms, and practices were struck down and replaced by quickly enacted rules, regulations, masks and PPE to protect both speech pathologists and patients.  Therapy activities that motivated and enriched patients were no longer possible, and we had to fill that void quickly and creatively.  This change had us blasting our way through digital landscapes, conquering communication across vast distances, and compensating for barriers of impenetrable plastic and textiles. 2021 is a New Year of Change and Creativity That Will Breathe Fresh Life Into How Speech Pathologists’ Practice. How to Effectively Communicate While Wearing a Mask at Work.

If you wear a mask at work, you need these communication tips. Since the start of the covid pandemic, my job as a speech pathologist has become increasingly difficult. The people I work with are often hard of hearing, some have difficulty seeing, and others just don't know what is going on. If I want to talk to someone at work, I am required to wear an N95 respirator, a face shield, and a gown and gloves as well. Everyone in the facility who talks to a resident is required to wear the same mask, shield, gown and gloves attire. Therapists, nurses, housekeepers, aides, and cooks included. We all look the same. Because of the layers of mask and face shield, we all sound the same. And no one can hear us. We can't even hear each other. If you are hard of hearing and lip read--too bad. No lips to see. We therapists are not alone in the struggle to talk to others through layers of magic plastic shields and textile fibers. Masks and face shields are required at many businesses that meet with the public such as retail stores, grocery stores, and gas stations. If you are having problems talking to people when wearing a mask, or hearing others who have a mask on, read on. These communication tips will make your life easier. Communication Tips: 1.
