In Review // San Diego Comic-Con 2015

If you climbed under a rock and have been living there since Thursday, you may have missed the memo that the annual San Diego Comic-Con happened this weekend. There were so many panels you’d have to be Hermione with a Time-Turner to make it to all of them. But for all of my muggle friends out there, here’s the skinny on this Con’s biggest moments.

Star War’s The Force Awakens //

Precious little was announced at the Star Wars panel this year, yet it dominated discussions. Harrison Ford made his first appearance since his plane crash earlier this year. The one morsel we did receive? This behind-the-scenes reel which has spawned four major fan theories here.

Batman v. Superman//

There’s a new trailer and Wonder Woman/Lex Luthor have finally showed up to the party. Ben Affleck is set to direct and star in a future stand-alone Batman film. (Bonus: The Suicide Squad showed up with a teaser, but good luck finding it online. It’s getting taken down faster than Ke$ha can yell “timber”!**)

Fox //

New Deadpool trailer? Check. X-Men: Apocalypse teaser? Check. But they’re rare gems on YouTube for now. Even the new trailers for The Scorch Trials and The Fantastic Four have yet to make their way online. Happy trailer hunting, folks.

Living In A Van Down By The Riverfest

‘Tis the season for one of the most entertaining events of the year: Riverfest! It’s a celebration of all things Wichita, weird, but most of all fun. Centered in the heart of downtown ICT, this festival is jam packed with an array of food, music, and entertainment. Here’s a breakdown of the most exhilarating parts of this annual soiree:

The Medallion Hunt //

If you’re as competitive as I am, you’ll understand the joys and frustrations of this legendary establishment. Each year, The Wichita Eagle posts a series of clues designed to test even the most clever minds. A medallion is hidden somewhere in the city in this real-life, Goonies-esque treasure hunt. First person to find the medallion wins a prize. What is it? Honestly, who cares! Bragging rights about winning this brain-bending game are enough.

Music //

This year’s line up of musical guests really highlights the growth this annual event has undergone in the last few years. With groups such as Flogging Molly, Mayer Hawthorne, and The Village People showing up in the ICT scene, it’s obvious the event planners have really stepped up their A-game. And for only $10 per button, which gets you access to every event, your money is being well spent! Here’s a full list of the musical guests this year.

Checking In With Gaga // AHS Hotel

Fans of American Horror Story are going gaga for, well, Gaga! Our favorite Mother Monster announced a few days ago that she will be joining the myriad of talented individuals on AHS. She even gave us another bit of news. The show's season title will be Hotel. Many speculate Ryan Murphy will draw inspiration for this season from horror classics such as "The Shining" and "Psycho". This is promising for a creative and terrifying season and a return to what made Murder House and Asylum so great. Freak Show failed to deliver on several levels and left many disappointed after the strength of previous seasons. Murphy could make this the most horrifying season yet, so let's keep our fingers crossed!

In the meantime, many still wonder if Jessica Lange will make a return for Hotel. Original reports stated Lange would bow out after Freak Show. However, new statements hint at a possibility of her reappearance amongst the cast. But I have another guess as to what might be happening with the line-up for this season.

The casting of Lady Gaga left many baffled, but equally excited. But why Gaga? My theory? Perhaps Gaga will be playing a younger version of one of Lange's previous characters. It would explain why Lange is leaving for this season. It would also fit in with Murphy's confirmation that all of the seasons are connected. This might be his attempt at creating a large, binding connection between two seasons. Freak Show brought back Pepper and Sister Mary Eunice. Why not bring back a character like Constance from Murder House or a younger Fiona Goode? This leaves the door open for Lange to star in future seasons, but also gives someone younger the chance to play a large role in AHS.

There Will Be Tears // Saying Farewell

Today is the day we say farewell to our favorite employees of a government entity - the employees that started in a little office known as the Parks and Recreation Department of Pawnee Indiana. Over the years they've accomplished more than they could have ever dreamed, and inspired us along the way. It's been a journey for many, myself included. Which is why tonight I'll be seated on my couch, a box of tissues close by, and a plate full of waffles to send those beautiful tropical fish off on their new adventures.

Though they're leaving our lives, they've instilled in us some truly resounding advice. Buzzfeed does an amazing job summarizing those tidbits of gold here. I couldn't possibly expand on this list, because it perfectly encompasses what the show is all about. So tonight, hold your friends close, get ready to bawl like a baby, and remember that there's a little Leslie Knope in all of us. You just have to believe in yourself, your passions, and most of all the friends that believe in you, too. Now I'm off to stock up on tissues and breakfast food, I hope you do the same!

Awards season is rapidly approaching and the Golden Globes are nearly upon us. Why So Serious // Return of the Joker

Warner Brothers search for their next Joker is over and Jared Leto has some big clown shoes to fill. Leto, Oscar Award-winning Actor with hair so divine even Jesus might get jealous, is set to star as the Joker in the 2016 film The Suicide Squad. Some feel it's too soon to reboot the Joker and the legendary standard Heath Ledger set with his posthumous award-winning performance. But, if anyone can live up to expectations, it's going to be Leto.

Leto hasn't acted since his appearance in Dallas Buyer's Club. However, his ability to completely transform and transcend the boundaries of his own image in DBC gives us a glimpse of what might be in store for us come 2016. Ledger set an incredibly high bar with his grittier take on The Joker. Leto is one of few, if not the only actor, who is currently capable of taking this character and making it his own.

The Fuss about Frankamp

It's official, Conner Frankamp has found a new home with the Wichita State Shockers. The Kansas University transfer will be eligible to join the Shockers on the court after the first semester next season. But at the end of the day, what's all the excitement about?

First, Frankamp was ranked on average in polls as a Top 40 recruit for the graduating class of 2013. Rivals.com placed him at No. 34 while ESPN gave him a solid No. 46 ranking. Second, at North High, he scored 2,295 points and averaged 31.1 points, 3.8 assists and 3.5 rebounds as a senior. Frankamp made 93 three-pointers, shot 49.2 percent from three-point range and 91.7 percent from the free-throw line. Third, he was a major asset to KU in their NCAA Tournament run, hitting double digits in their win over Eastern Kentucky and an unfortunate loss to Stanford.

The numbers don't lie. Frankamp seems to have bountiful potential to work with for Coach Marshall and the Shockers. And if all works out, he'll be on the court on December 12, 2015 once WSU finals have ended. Frankcamp would also be eligible to play in the 2016-17 and 2017-18. Rumors of Baker leaving early for the NBA increase the excitement around a strong player like Frankcamp joining Shocker Nation.

Only time will tell. We'll all have to wait until next December to see the fate of Frankamp and the Shocks. Until then, Play Angry!

Small Business Saturday // ICT Local Favorites

After the madness of Black Friday and national retailers holding the spotlight, it's time for the little guys to shine. Today is National Small Business Saturday. It's a day when local retailers especially encourage shoppers to spend at businesses within their own community. And why not? Studies show that local businesses return three times the amount of profit to the local community than that of their national counterparts. So celebrate the little guys and the town you inhabit by shopping small.

If you want to keep drinking crummy coffee and think it's okay, then don't go to Reverie. But if you do wander into this Wichita treasure, your coffee world will be turned upside-down in the best way possible.

Reverie Coffee Roasters provides artisan roasted coffee while educating their customers on how real coffee should taste. They roast their own beans every week, which is a delightful sight to behold (and smell). What started off as a roastery, with intentions to sell bulk beans to other coffee shops and restaurants has evolved into so much more. They began a tiny cafe in the roastery shortly after opening, not expecting anything to come of it. However, the cafe's success pleasantly surprised them with how popular it's become. Reverie offers their roasted beans in bulk, a fully stocked cafe, coffee brewing accessories, live music on occasion, and a wonderful education center to help you become a coffee guru.

Reverie Coffee Roasters is a little piece of Heaven in Wichita and you're missing out if you never visit this local gem.

5 Reasons to Be Mega-Excited For Wichita State Basketball

The 2014-2015 season for the Wichita State University Shocker Basketball team looks promising. With star players gaining seniority and more basketball prowess, one of the best college basketball coaches in the nation and a fan-base that bleeds black and yellow - it's a great time to be a Shocker! Here are five reasons you should be pumped for this season, even if you're not from Wichita State.

1. The Point Guards // VanVleet and Baker

Welcome to the VanVleet and Baker show! The two were given All-American status in the preseason, making it the first time in history for Wichita State to have two All-Americans in the backcourt. It's also the first time in the university's history to have a single All-American guard. Now we have two. VanVleet and Baker have been power players since their Freshman year when they helped take the Shockers to the Final Four. Now as Juniors, they're even more formidable players. It'll be exciting to see what's next for these two fan favorites.

2. The Senior // Tekele Cotton

Standing at 6'3", he's by no means the tallest Shocker basketball players. But when you see the Senior dunk on men half a foot taller, you know this guy can fly. Just watch this, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. In his years playing for Wichita State, he's become one of the strongest players on the team and has a way of sneaking past opponents to find the net. 100% Cotton deserves 100% respect.

3. The Coach // Gregg Marshall

Simply put, Gregg Marshall is a basketball legend. His ability to recruit players with nearly unlimited potential and letting them shine on the court is something to behold. He's one of the smartest coaches on a college level and just plain fun to watch courtside. His method of coaching has helped take a team who hadn't seen the NCAA since 2006 reach the Final Four in 2013. The Shockers appeared again in 2014 to be knocked out after a 35-0 season. The last time the team had lost? The previous Final Four game. Pretty amazing for an underdog team who came out of nowhere for bigger schools like Louisville and Kentucky, giving them both a serious run for their money.

Bingeable // Fall TV Guide // Part 1

With Netflix and Hulu Plus, among many other online streaming platforms, it makes watching just one more episode of Scandal oh-so easy. What's a girl to do? Well, blog about being a serial binge-watcher of course! This Fall is brimming with shows that vary from hilarious to down-right dramatic. Here are two of my favorite comedies I'm currently watching and you should be, too.

The Mindy Project

This comedy is a must-watch for anyone who proclaims to have a sense of humor. In true Mindy Kaling fashion, this show demonstrates her ability to write hilarious comedy, as well as act it out. But she's not alone. Chris Messina, macho New Yorker Danny Castellano is a fantastically adorable and grounding balance to Mindy's eccentricities. But fellow actor Ike Barinholtz truly steals the show as Morgan Tookers. And Adam Pally? Perfection! After Happy Endings was tragically cancelled (the biggest mistake in sitcom history as far as I'm concerned), Pally found a new home on The Mindy Project and I couldn't be happier that he's joined this quirky and wonderful cast!

The Mindy Project has entered it's third season this Fall and I cannot wait to see where they take this delightful ride.

Bonus: Tons of wonderful comedians and actors drop in from time to time, such as Mark Duplass, Anders Holm, Bill Hader, Seth Meyers and many others. Julia Stiles will be joining the cast tonight as a potential love interest for Morgan Tookers, cue the "Ooooo's" and "Awwww's".

FOX // Tuesdays // 9:30/8:30 Central

Marry Me

While there aren't many episodes to binge with this series, as it's only three episodes in, Marry Me is already proving itself with some major comedic chops. Casey Wilson, another Happy Endings veteran (woah, second Happy Endings reference in one blog post?), and Ken Marino of Party Down play an engaged couple, and of course, hijinks ensue. It's a wonderfully funny show that's off to a great start with potential to become a massive hit.

Bonus: John Gemberling of Broad City stars in this and is priceless. Also, after Dan Bucatinsky's departure from such a dramatic role on Scandal, it's nice to see his acting diversity in a comedy.

NBC // Tuesdays // 9/8 Central

I have a slew of other series I'm addicted to. So have no fear, I'll be back soon with additional shows I just can't get enough of. In the meantime, if you have any suggestions for this girl, I'm always down to binge-watch a new show!

Halloween How-To

Hello folks!

Halloween is today, yikes! And for those of you who like to procrastinate as much as I do, you might still be searching for the perfect costume. I'm not afraid to get down and dirty in a DAV or Goodwill at the last second to find just the right thing to complete my look.

For those of you who are equal parts perfectionist, competitive and creative like me, here are a few quick and fun ideas to out-Halloween your friends!

Holly Golightly

Audrey Hepburn's famous role as the young socialite in Breakfast at Tiffany's has inspired many Halloween trends. Chic black dress, multi-layered pearl necklace, stylishly arranged bun and cigarette holder are all you need to complete the look. But if you want to take it up a notch, try another look of hers that's not often seen at parties. All you need is an oversized white dress shirt, statement earrings and a blue sleep mask. (You can quickly add some gold ribbon embellishments to make it more similar to hers.)

Dancing Emojis

For the ladies looking to get their Halloween on with friends, here's an adorable and easy idea! Just grab a black leotard, or a black tank and shorts, cat ears and black heels. This look will be super budget-friendly while you and your pal look "totes adorbs".

Chipotle Burrito

Ladies and gentleman, here's a costume that you can both pull off and be the fan favorite at any party! All you need is an emergency blanket, the Chipotle logo, a few well placed safety pins, and some tissue paper or fake lettuce leaves. (That last item is totally optional.) Wrap the blanket around you like a toga, pin it and tape the printed out Chipotle logo on top of the safety pin. Voila! (Tip - Emergency blankets are only a few dollars at Target. Also, try finding a sombrero for that extra bit of spice.)

Vroom vroom! Over the past few years, America has seen a trending boom in the food truck industry. Not one to miss out on a good time or a quirky idea, Wichita has become home to many eateries on wheels. In honor of what I'm dubbing "Tasty Tuesday", here's what you need to know about a few of Wichita's most notable food trucks.

The Flying Stove

By far the most widely recognized food truck, The Flying Stove creates some seriously tasty treats! They've been in the biz since 2011 and have served up pure deliciousness every day since. Similar to many other trucks, their menu rotates weekly, so unless you keep up with their website or Facebook/Twitter, you'll be in for a surprise each time you go.

Tasty Tuesday Tip // Try their Truffle Fries, they're out of this world!

B.S. Sandwich Press

Another delightful addition to the food truck assembly in Wichita is B.S. Sandwich Press. As their name suggests, they serve up a mean sandwich. They've been spinning those wheels and feeding hungry Wichitans since 2012.

Tasty Tuesday Tip // Their Gourmet Grilled Cheeses are better than a day of binge-watching on Netflix.

Hopperoni Express

An extension of the Wichita Brewing Company, this lovely eatery rolls around with some of the best artisan pizza in Wichita. Inside their truck is Wichita's first wood fired pizza oven on wheels. Pretty cool, right? What could be better than that? How about their handcrafted sodas!

Tasty Tuesday Tip // They make Cream Soda and it's incredible!
