I love this because it means that everything that is in the show was in personal logs. Picard is depicted as hating Lwaxana Troi specifically because he just couldn't help but bitch about her in his personal logs every night. We only know about that one conversation because Garak was so appaled he made an entry specifically about how vile rootbeer is. The doctor that transferred Dax from Curzon to Jadzia went home and wrote "dear diary, today I operated on a trill who fucked himself to death".

[Spoilers for a minor character's arc in Deep Space Nine below the cut]

Legit me and my wife watched Lower Decks before we watched Deep Space Nine, so the first time we ever encountered the character of Rom, he was already Grand Nagus and married to Leeta. -- And then we started DS9, and my wife was like, 'wait.... is that the future Grand Nagus?!?!??'

Not only is it low-key delightful to watch every Rom scene knowing he basically becomes king of the Ferengi (especially after the first season or so, at which point the writers figured out he's WAY more fun as an underestimated sweetheart than as a generic loser/asshole), it also gave my wife the idea to frame the entirety of Deep Space Nine as a series of holo-novels written by Ferengi authors about the life story of the Grand Nagus.

And that's why characters will suddenly act really weird and inconsistent - it's not necessarily a gas leak on the station making Sisko randomly sexist for one day, or Dominion brainwashing making Julian forget he's in love with Garak; it's just that some of these Ferengi authors either didn't do their research and/or they have a LOT of trouble understanding Federation values.

I've always had the theory that TOS is just a reconstruction of the (mostly falsified) logs, made into a Ferengi holo program. It explains the lore inconsistenties, the quality of the set, and the treatment of women
