Video Portrait: Concept: Movement

My film doesn’t explore a single genre, it is meant to be an art piece that explores how movement expresses various emotions in different environments.
When taking on this project I continuously changed my idea, but I knew that I wanted it to be free form and to be a real exploration of the space around me. Hence, I took the camera and filmed things that I thought looked interesting. When reviewing all my footage I became very interested in how the movement of all the objects expressed their own emotions and personalities. The editing process essentially broke down all of these object’s movements to express something unique about each.
The shots that I chose to use all had a locked off camera to capture the movement of the objects in the space. I also wanted to make each element feel as natural as possible, therefore, the shots do not try to use bird or worm’s eye.
While editing this project, I understood that I wasn’t following a linear story line, therefore, I needed to maintain visual interest by creating a flow between shots. To create this interest I layered many shots to create an emphasis on the movement (windmills) or details of the shots (spark on plug), rewinded and repeated shots to emphasize the degree of movement (river flowing), slowed down shots to create contrast and juxtaposed shots to show the differences in movement.
The video is meant to just give a closer look into how we perceive the world around us. Movement characterizes everything that we interact with -we can create the movement or the world moving around us but when isolated, it takes on many characteristics, almost as if it were to coming to life.
