maybe he would get into trouble for trying to cover for someone else. tian hoped not, but you could never be all too sure when it came to the professors. some of them were nicer than others, but it was not like he wanted to be covering for someone, he’d sort of been forced into it. sure he could have refused, but then would have just gotten himself beaten up and tian really didn’t want that. “a….seat?” why did he want him to sit down, he had just come here to pass along a message and was sort of hoping to escape now. however, he did do as he was told, anxiously nibbling on his bottom lip, eyes nervously darting around the office. he did blink a little in confusion as he was handed an ice pack, but took it all the same with a small mumbled thank you, pressing it lightly against his nose. it didn’t even really hurt anymore, it was just one punch which had caused a nosebleed, and that was rather obvious by the tissue still stuck up there and the drops of dried blood on his shirt. “i don’t think he’s planning to go to any detentions,” he just added in a rather small voice, still feeling as though he was in some sort of trouble, even if the professor wasn’t shouting at him or anything, he still felt pretty rotten about it. “i’m tian… zhao tian. i’m not in trouble, am i?”

Sometimes, Seungcheol wonders if he’s intimidating. Well he had to be because he was a professor, but he liked to believe that the smile on his face was at least harmless and not at all like Ara’s permanent frown. But he couldn’t help but let out a defeated sigh because of course the college kid would refuse to attend any sort of detention. Well I’ll let Ara deal with that one. “Hmm, I see. I hope he’s ready for Ara-ssi to come after him then.” After all, Ara’s reputation wasn’t one to take lightly. “Zhao Tian. Nice to meet you. You’re not in any trouble no,” he said as he took a sip of his own cup of tea. “But I hope this is the only time that you’re doing this, and for a college kid at that. Don’t let the older kids push you over.” And in a sense, he spoke from experience itself.

mina hadn’t really dressed up much, and if anything it was difficult trying to pick a dress that suited her figure now and how she was looking. but after a while, she’d at least found a nice red dress that fitted the occasion, it was fancy enough, yet also staff appropriate so that she could monitor the dance with the other staff members. it was just interesting for mina, seeing those that she knew formerly as a student, now all around here whilst he was a staff member instead. she hadn’t bothered with a stupid mask though as she moved over to the side where she saw another standing. seungcheol, apparently. “you say that like i’m still a student.” she hummed out, water in her hand because like hell she was going near the drinks in here. “besides admitting that it would’ve been nice for some help with the high schoolers outside, i’m fine and the situation is under control there. what are you doing besides standing around watching the kids here?”

Mina was one of his students before she had disappeared. She was nice enough when she was a student and he didn’t have any qualms when she was in class. Mina did okay enough to not be on his shit list, if he did say so himself. He chuckled nodded to his side, wordlessly telling her that she was free to stay by his side. “Force of habit. And besides, the last time I saw you, you were still my student,” he joked instead. “Did you not get assigned a partner to handle the high schoolers?” Leaving a pregnant woman to handle the most overzealous of the Keisung population was definitely not the best decision the administration made. Seungcheol pointed to the Jung heiress from where he was standing, an amused smile on his face. “Keeping an eye on Ara-ssi. Any minute now and she’s going to blow her top at the kids. If she does, I have to be ready and take my young one, everyone else can suffer her wrath instead.” Although his voice was just as full of mirth and hilarity at the warning he said.

as much as hoetaek got beat up in high school, nowadays they can usually avoid physical confrontations by adhering to one simple rule: don’t talk back. today though, some assholes had caught them in a bad mood and hoetaek hadn’t been able to stop themself from calling them out on their shit. which, in turn, had made said assholes start cornering hoetaek and they’d done what any sane person would do in that situation: they ran. which is how they’d ended up here. hoetaek hadn’t meant to end up outside of the history professor’s office, they’d just kind of ran blindly, doing their best to lose the assholes chasing them. they’d managed to get a fair way ahead, but they’re pretty sure the guys are going to find them eventually and, considering the fact that their lungs feel like they’re going to give out (damn you cigarettes!) they need some place to hide, fast. and so, having considered all their options, they raise their hand to knock on professor han seungcheol’s door.

“hey sir, what’s up, how’s it going, having a good day?” hoetaek says, all at once in a breathless rush, when he calls for them to come in. suddenly it occurs to them that they haven’t had a history class that wasn’t art-related since freshman year and they’re not entirely sure seungcheol will remember them. oh well, they’re here now. “hey, so, here’s a completely normal, regular, every day question, can I hide in here for like, ten minutes?”

Well this is new. No one ever used his office as a hiding place before—save for Jitae but everyone already knew that—and he couldn’t help but be amused at the progress of activities. But he does remember the kid at least; they were just in his class because it was a required subject. They were a nice enough kid, that was for sure, and they didn’t give them any sort of problem when they were still in his class. “Doing fine, thank you,” he answered, amusement and mirth all over his tone. “Feel free to take a seat. Careful with the papers though,” he said instead, knowing he’s left a bunch of the other students’ papers on one of the other two chairs in his office.

He continued on with checking the papers left on his table. Looking at them had his head aching and a defeated sigh came out of his mouth. Maybe he should ask Jian if he wanted to have drinks and dinner tonight? Unless he already has plans with Ara then that won’t work, he thought then before adding, maybe I should ask Jitae to come home tonight? After all, Habaek, the fat corgi that he was, was being rebellious and refused to listen to him to go for a walk. If he didn’t know any better, he just wanted Jitae to walk him. Dogs were a piece of work. And then he remembered he had company and another smile, he offered, “I’ll offer you tea if you tell me what’s been going on that had you hiding in here.”

tian didn’t normally let himself be bullied and pushed around by older students, but when this college kid pulled him to the side tian didn’t really have much of a choice. this guy was a giant he towered over tian and that was saying something. he’d even been given a bloody nose, a taste of what else he would get if he didn’t listen and do as he was told. so that was why he was now standing outside the history professor’s office, a tissue sticking out of this right nostril as he raised his hand and knocked on the door. there was a pause and then the voice from inside telling him to come in. the first year swallowed the lump in his throat as he pushed open the door, standing there almost awkwardly like he was the one in trouble. “i’m just here to say… um…” he had to pause, trying to think of what he had been told to say, “that shim hojae won’t be going to his detentions later. he has… er… plans. yeah, that’s it.”

There was a frown on his face when he saw the high schooler come in, tissue up his nose and a bruise starting to form at that appendage. As much as he knew the population detested the addition of high schoolers in Keisung—he wasn’t into the decision all that much either but the administrators had more hold over that matter. “Have a seat,” he said instead as he looked for a cold pack from his fridge and passed it over to the tall high schooler. He always saw to it that his first aid kit and his cold and hot packs were always ready for Minsu (and on occasion, the other two), but he never thought he’d offer it to someone else as well. “Put the cold pack over the bruise. It would lessen it a bit, at least.” Seungcheol knew guys would always pick fights, but it seems as if these college kids think it’d be fine to bully high schoolers. “Well then. Since he doesn’t want to do it now, he can spend the rest of his Friday explaining it all to Ara-ssi instead.” After all, from the time he spent with Jian, he’s pretty sure the guidance counselor’s girlfriend wasn’t fond of anyone giving her more work than necessary nor was she fond of unprovoked violence. He gives the kid a reassuring smile instead and offered him tea. “I never got your name?”

The masquerade was in full swing and he couldn’t help the smile on his face. Everyone needed a breather from the nitty-gritty clique life of Keisung. Seungcheol still didn’t understand the whole thing, but he was going learning at least. Jian was a big help at making him understand this whole clique business and he always thought those only existed in movies. But it seems as if clique life had taken a backseat that night and majority of the attendees looked as if they were enjoying themselves; even Lux had gone, but he was just worried that his brothers might have given him hell for wanting to attend. Ah well. The kid was going to enjoy the night when he wanted. Someone approached him then and the smile was back on his face, finally remembering he was here for work. “Anything I can help you with?”

The pile of papers filled with red marks had him incredibly frustrated. He knew history wasn’t a favourite among students, but for all the years he’s worked in Keisung, he’s never seen anyone make any some sort of effort for it. Or, well, there are a few others, but still. It was frustrating to no ends. A knock on the door takes him out of his reverie and he snaps his head up, wondering who could it be that was at the door. Besides Jitae and a few staff members, no one ever visited him in his office. Fixing the pile of papers in his hands, he puts them back in the envelope and fixes his glasses, a smile on his face as he says, “Come in.”

“and that’s the last of it.” seungcheol couldn’t help but sigh out at the stack of papers he’d just finished checking for his history classes in keisung. not many students took history seriously, and he’s pretty sure even the students’ in bigger universities were the same. hell, he’d met so many of them while he was in college so it’s not even surprising that students in keisung were the same. he was ready to go home, have dinner with habaek, maybe watch a few shows, before finally knocking out. he wasn’t that young anymore after all.

but then jitae had told him he was coming home for the night and so he waited in his office, a cup of coffee in his hands. finding jitae had been the very reason why he’d been given direction in his life after he lost his brother and girlfriend in that gang fight. jitae had given him the will to live again. seungcheol was going to do everything for jitae (and minsu and lux) if it meant he was going to be happy. besides, habaek missed jitae a lot too. his office door opening had him looking up before smiling as he saw who it was. “hey. ready to go?”

and then bam they were shot by unknown assailants when they were in seoul

so because of this tragedy, he often failed his psychological exams when he was applying to become a professor to some big universities

and keisung was the only one willing to accept him so he took in

plus he went to keisung to forget about the tragedy that befell him okay :(

fastforward a year later and he found jitae in seoul while he was on the run

so since then he’s been taking care of jitae and has since then become his legal guardian
