I've have been yelling this for about 5 something years now. Young folks who actually fancy themselves "liberal" have been parroting the same right wing puritan ideology I heard as an 80s kid and 90s teenager, it is the very essence of James Dobson's Focus on the Family books, the countless Fundamentalist tracts I read on reading and watching only wholesome, pure entertainment.

Puritanism is centered on the basic idea that all that you watch and read transforms you into what you read, that what you write is what you desire. It is not a mature, liberal ideal. It is inherently conservative and rooted in the mystical notion that we are vessels to be filled with morality. And that is especially the case with women and girls, who are viewed as morally empty as Eve, silly things that will go along with whatever someone tells them, be that a book, or "bad man".
