“A paradox is a genuine reversal of the commonly accepted point of view, one that presents an unacceptable world, thereby eliciting resistance and rejection, and yet, if we make an effort to understand it, it is one that leads to knowledge; eventually it seems to be witty because it has to be admitted that it is true.”
— Umberto Eco, On the Shoulders of Giants
Idk how to articulate this but roll with me
Idk whether to blame midsommar or general ignorance but, coming from a culture that celebrates midsummer and incorporates long skirts, linen, and flower crowns into national dress, and whose traditions on the solstice involve bonfire and singing, its really frustrating to see footage and depictions and videos of midsummer celebrations being commented on like "ohhoo what cult is this? Are they going to sacrifice me?" thats another person's culture and holidays im going to hit you with sticks

it is impossible to watch a movie. every night i think i want to watch a movie. no movie gets watched. because it's not possible
and yet they keep making movies with the hopes that one day humanity will discover a way to watch them. it's so inspiring
You actually cannot skip to being good at a creative endeavour that you haven't put much practice into. You cannot trick your way out of the 'knows that your work is not what you want it to be but don't know how to improve it' stage by planning or reading or talking about it really really hard. At some point you just have to craft through it until your brain finds it's own unique way back to the 'everything I make slaps' stage and be prepared to start the cycle all over again. You just have to make that project you're excited about slightly less good than you want it to be. (Says this standing in a pool of blood and covered in blood and also coughing up a little blood)
“We write stories about imaginary people in imaginary situations. Then we publish them (because they are, in their strange way, acts of communication — addressed to others). And then people read them and call up and say, But who are you? Tell us about yourself! And we say, But I have. It’s all there, in the book. All that matters — But you made all that up! — Out of what?”
— Ursula K. Le Guin, The Language of the Night

“Fantasy is true, of course. It isn’t factual, but it is true. Children know that. Adults know it, too, and that is precisely why many of them are afraid of fantasy. They know that its truth challenges, even threatens, all that is false, all that is phony, unnecessary, and trivial in the life they have let themselves be forced into living.”
— Ursula K. Le Guin, The Language of the Night
one time in college i was in a creative writing class and this guy was holding up the critique with what i can only describe as like cinemasins dinging another student's writing. and at some point the professor said "the plot is the fork and the prose is the meal. you are critiquing the taste of the fork"
I LOVE WHEN THEATRE HAS BLOOD
i learned today of a 17th century Dutch adaptation of Medea by Jan Vos in which Medea flew through the sky on a chariot in act 4 and killed her children by pushing them out of the chariot. however. the children were two sacks filled with pig's blood. and the audience got splattered.
