Am I the only one shocked that after Mai saved him, Zuko never once mentioned her? Not once? And then she shows up in the last few minutes of the last episode and he's happy. Not that he seemed in any hurry to find out what happened to her after her arrest... This relationship has absolutely no development. It's killing me.
"Mai, you're out of prison!" <- is the ruler of the country
"Well, it doesn't hurt when your boyfriend is the firelord." <- said firelord broke up with her and didn't know she was out of prison
Definitely reeks of crazy ex-girlfriend tropes where she's told everybody that they are still together in order to get her way all the way up the chain until she could finally see him.
Unfortunately the writers just make him accept her words as gospel. Does that mean they made him naive enough to buy her manipulation or battered enough to not want to correct her reasoning?
That's what I'm saying!
I mean, one is inclined to follow the logical conclusion especially given Zuko's history of abuse, but since the writers are misogynistic, it's not portrayed as abuse, but a "wow haha women are crazy" stereotype. I know there's the fandom stereotype of hysterical female fans painting Mai as abusive because they see her as a romantic rival, but at least those people are taking her actions SERIOUSLY. I'm whipping out that quote again about strong female characters behaving in ways that would normally be labelled as abusive just to get narrative recognition.
