FINALLY COMPLETED!! My first full-size pixel art illustration, based on a screenshot of the Svalbard data center from Pantheon. This was an idea I've been stewing on for the better part of a year, and only recently got the confidence to go for it! I was very inspired by the style of 8pxl, especially how they do clouds!

This piece is scaled to 1920 by 1080 p, the average resolution for a monitor, because I made it to be a free wallpaper for anyone who wants it! It's a gift to the community and all the wonderful people in it 💖

Apparently a lot of people get dialogue punctuation wrong despite having an otherwise solid grasp of grammar, possibly because they’re used to writing essays rather than prose. I don’t wanna be the asshole who complains about writing errors and then doesn’t offer to help, so here are the basics summarized as simply as I could manage on my phone (“dialogue tag” just refers to phrases like “he said,” “she whispered,” “they asked”):

“For most dialogue, use a comma after the sentence and don’t capitalize the next word after the quotation mark,” she said.

“But what if you’re using a question mark rather than a period?” they asked.

“When using a dialogue tag, you never capitalize the word after the quotation mark unless it’s a proper noun!” she snapped.

“When breaking up a single sentence with a dialogue tag,” she said, “use commas.”

“This is a single sentence,” she said. “Now, this is a second stand-alone sentence, so there’s no comma after ‘she said.’”

“There’s no dialogue tag after this sentence, so end it with a period rather than a comma.” She frowned, suddenly concerned that the entire post was as unasked for as it was sanctimonious.

Maybe this is an issue of formal versus informal rules, but I actually disagree strongly with the dashes going outside the dialogue tag. For me, grammar exists at the end of the day primarily to convey cadence, to tell the reader how phrases exist in relation to each other, where the pauses should go and how long they should go. And when you break up the dialogue with interstitial action, you want the dash inside the quotation marks, because that is where the pause happens. You are telling the reader that the speaker actually stopped talking briefly in order for the physical action to occur, and then the speaker resumed after it was concluded. If you want the action to be happening while the speaker continues to speak, you need to use a different sentence structure. For example:

“If you’re breaking dialogue up with an action tag–” She waves her hands back and forth. “–the dashes go inside the quotation marks. This cues the reader that a pause happened in the speech.”

“Whereas if the speaker isn’t pausing their speech,” she continues, putting her hands on her hips, “you would use the commas and keep it as one sentence, with the action verb in the middle formed into a present participle. This cues the reader that speech and action are happening simultaneously, rather than sequentially.”

“You can also use a period instead of a dash to convey the speaker pausing for an action to occur.” She tapped her fingers thoughtfully against her lips. “But that will convey a stronger, more deliberate pause, whereas the dash conveys a sense of continuity, a shorter or more breathless pause. Use judiciously to match the cadence of how you imagine the dialogue sounding in your head.”

after some thought on the matter i have come to this conclusion

yes blaseball the sim is no longer running. but blaseball is not just the sim, but also the community, AND the stories we tell about it. we're only done with ONE of those 3 things

i dont know how many of you are, like myself, also dr who fans. but fun fact! the most prolific incarnation of the doctor is actually the one with the LEAST tv appearances!! because you know what??? after the tv movie came out in 1996, fans took the 8th doctor and just MADE stuff: novels, audio dramas, comics! theres a whole name for that era, even (the wilderness years)!!! and then in 2005, another fan convinced the BBC to let him reboot the series!! the most recent showrunner was a member of the dr who appreciation society all the way back when he was 16 or so in the 80s! and two of the main series incarnations of the doctor (david tennant + peter capaldi) have been fans of the show since they were kids!

and even outside of official stuff, dr who fans have been known for our efforts to catalogue and share stuff for a long time now — there are lost episodes from the 60s that we still have audio of because people watching recorded it! even within dw tumblr, if you say, hey does anyone have anywhere to watch / read / listen to this specific thing, you can get like 3 links from 3 different people within an hour!

what we need to do is we need to make like dr who fans. tell all our favorite stories! and make everything we want to! its a brave new world — but we already have a start in cataloguing and in just HAVING the communities we do

i don't think anything will ever replace blaseball, but i think it's inspired a lot of us. there are nearly 30k people in the discord, tgb have said before that people in the discord are a minority of players so i think it's safe to estimate at least 60k fans. 60k potential artist and writers and programmers and other creative endeavors.

as much as we all joke that we do not mention homestuck in the community, and as much as I don't think they are anything alike in content, i do think that they are alike in the way they have inspired so many people.

blaseball will never be replaced, but I do feel it will have a lasting impact on how stories are told by people on the Internet

Hi everyone here from Blaseball! It sucks that it's over now, but it's been so so fun. I might make occasional unposts like this one, maybe unposting some music or any projects I'm currently making, or I might just ramble about D&D or other interests (without posting of course).
