Absolutely brilliant article.

It's about how the unaddressed sexism in 17th century based self-defense law leaves abused women vulnerable in the criminal justice system. Domestic violence victims who's Danger Assessment score indicates they are at severe to extreme risk of being murdered by their abuser do not have the reasonable human right to kill in self-defense or defense of their children because in law, only men are allowed to kill to protect themselves - women's survival and self-defense is criminalized and severely punished.

The one and only option given to women who's lives are in active danger is to end up as a femicide statistic. However, some do not, which leads us here. Rachel Louise Snyder tells the stories of incarcerated women guilty of homicide who've recieved no mercy, facing the harshest punishments the justice system can impose: twenty, fifty years, life in prison without parole, even the death row. She shows how society and the justice system has abysmally failed and continues to fail and punish victims of domestic violence who against all odds manage to survive.

The study this article is based on is recent, published in 2024. No national data existed on the number of women who are incarcerated for killing their abusers beforehand, so this is the first report of this scale that has been made (at the suggestion of Rachel Louise Snyder herself) and an important first step in addressing systemic sexism.

It's part of The Stanford Criminal Justice Center's Regilla Project, which aims to examine the so called female "abuse-to-prison" pipeline, how suffering domestic violence is a major factor leading women to commit crimes. This article summarizes the most important findings and conclusions as well as being touching and emotional.

I was watching a documentary called the “State of Alabama vs. Brittany Smith”. It’s about a woman who killed her rapist (who, at the time of his slaying, had her brother in a chokehold). Something in it stuck with me.

When the prosecutor was speaking to her, he asked something along the line of, “Did the [perpetrator] have any visible weapons on him?”

She responded with, “His hands.”

Then he asks again, “Did the [perpetrator] have any-“”

She interrupts him and says, “His penis.”

He speaks again and then she says, “His mouth.”

It just stuck with me because…it’s so right. Men’s hands, especially men’s penises, their mouths, their whole bodies, are weapons, especially towards women. Men are significantly stronger than women physically and yeah, that matters. A woman has no or very little chance of physically defending herself against a male without a weapon, and even that’s very risky depending on the laws in your country. Men use their bodies to hit women, punch women, slap women, rape women, violate women in ways almost incomparable to when used against other men.

Considering how men view women, how they view themselves, how they view masculinity, how they view sex, women and girls have every right to be cautious around men and “picky” about the ones they have in their lives.

If you ever volunteer with incarcerated women or women in halfway homes from incarceration(which I recommend) , that is a story you're going to hear a lot. They will defend themselves with weapons and then are seen as escalating and not 'reasonable reactionary force'

"I killed my abusive husband while he slept. It was the only way" charged and convicted with 2nd degree murder.

"I defended myself with a gun when he came at me. I couldnt fight back without it." charged and convicted.

Not to mention Stand Your Ground laws don't include women half the time, the women incarcerated for violent offenses are often traumatized victims of abusive men further being traumatized by an abusive system that punishes women for ending their abuse.

The idea that women can just do anything they want and face no consequences is laughable and incredibly false. Women are held to a much higher standard, and yet men claim it's the opposite.

A french policeman is currently investigated because a woman called for help as her ex was outside her building threatening to kill her and the officer on the phone made fun of her and insulted her instead of helping. She told the officer “he said he’s going to kill me” and the officer replied “no :)” with a smile, she said “yes he is!” and the officer condescendly said “oh! :)”. Then the woman yelled at her ex through the window: “stop screaming in front of my building you’re fucking annoying!” and the officer said “and you’re cursing you piece of shit no wonder he’s threatening you. Don’t call again and sort this shit out yourself” and he hung up on her. So she called again and talked to someone who seemed a lot nicer… except it was the same police officer pretending to be another one who didn’t know her situation, making her repeat herself again. She complained to him about the previous phone call, that she was insulted and hung up on, and in a perfect exercice of gaslighting the officer faked disbelief  “really? He insulted you? He said “sort this shit yourself you piece of shit”? That seems unlikely.” The next day she walked out of her building and her ex was waiting for her with a baseball bat. He beat her within an inch of her life, punched her, kicked her and tried to drive over her. Her daughter called the police in a panic and he was arrested, he’s currently serving a 4 years sentence for attempted murder. The daughter is deeply traumatised as one could expect. The police officer is 48 years old and has been working for the police for 20 years. He’s only suspended from answering emergency calls, otherwise he’s still working despite those facts. He said he didn’t believe the woman was in real danger, that she sounded like “a fantasist” and that “a woman who is in danger is not agressive against the individual threatening her.” He said he had no reason to send a patrol car for this woman. During his audition with the police inspection he was still using the same ironic and dismissive tone and when asked if he had been trained about violence against women he replied “we aren’t obliged to read those memos”.

Update: The police officer has been condemned to 8 months probation (so he will not actually serve jail time) and he’s forbidden from working in the police for 18 months. He was also condemned to paying the victim but I don’t know how much.

i'm not finding any english news coverage on this but libya is making the hijab mandatory, they are making it illegal for women to travel without a male guardian, and even prohibiting women from being in the same public spaces as men. women's rights are being taken away in libya and its being ignored by the world so far. please please please speak up for libyan women.
