Every day I am confronted with a Wait That's Just Fanon??? event.

Today, it's that I would have sworn up and down that Tianlang-Jun getting imprisoned was on the basis he had kidnapped Su Xiyan, explaining her disappearance into the water prison at the hands of the Old Palace Master but. Nope. Book straight up says she disappeared and was presumed dead only after the battle.

Already imprisoned by the OPM, and then supposedly she disappeared after the battle, from the way Wu Chen tells it at first in the Zhao Hua Monastery scene:

As a deeply proud person, Benefactor Su couldn’t accept this, and she was even less willing to tolerate the dubious looks of outsiders. So the Old Palace Master brewed her a drug that was harmful to demons. After drinking it, she left Huan Hua Palace, and from then on, no one knew what became of her…

But the confusing part about her imprisonment is twofold: how long was she there, and how far along in her pregnancy was she already? Because the way it's framed, it gives a TINY window for OPM discovering their romance and then having TLJ sealed.

For one thing, it's specifically noted that TLJ and SXY met up bi-monthly and that the very next meeting was the one OPM set up to be the ambush, meaning that the sects had only a two-week span or less from the couple's last meeting to the battle itself:

After obtaining this information, the Old Palace Master immediately informed all the great sects in secret. Tianlang-Jun and Su Xiyan met at Bai Lu Mountain two times a month, so the sects decided that they would join together to besiege TianlangJun on the date of their next meeting.

Meanwhile, the OPM has imprisoned SXY, presumably right after he spied on them at Bai Lu Mountain. It's then that he discovers she's pregnant, as told by Wu Chen's confession of his last meeting with her. This also seems to confirm that the ambush was planned very quickly because he wanted her to help bait TLJ into it:

The Old Palace Master brought Benefactor Su back to Huan Hua Palace by force. She absolutely refused to obey orders, refused to trick you into going to the site of the ambush, where several dozen arrays had been set in advance. The Old Palace Master only discovered she was pregnant when subjecting her to torture within the Water Prison.

And then we get the whole "SXY willingly drank poison to be freed and go find TLJ, only a few days after TLJ had already been imprisoned" bit:

This one listened to the few lines she gasped out and guessed the general situation. Unable to bear deceiving her, he told her that several days before, Tianlang-Jun had already been sealed for all eternity. Only then did she realize that her master had told her a monstrous lie. Not only the location, but even the time had been false.

So my question is... if Su Xiyan was close enough to giving birth to Binghe that he could survive (leaving aside Protag Halo), then that means she was near the end of her pregnancy right as the ambush happened.

But that raises so many questions!! TLJ would've known she was pregnant by then, surely? Did she just not show at all, or was she purposefully hiding it from everyone with illusions (her sect's specialty) including her lover? DID SHE NOT EVEN KNOW HERSELF?? CRYPTIC DEMON PREGNANCY???? Entirely possible and brings up some crazy headcanons of what SXY may have felt about her surprise baby and then her decisions to protect him, but that's off-topic.

So maybe it's more that she was imprisoned by OPM way earlier, back when she wasn't at least visibly showing, which would explain that neatly. But then............. that leaves open the idea that SXY just vanished one day after anywhere between months and years of bi-monthly meetings, and TLJ just... didn't look into it? That seems very weird to me also...

The only other final alternative I can imagine is that she escaped after drinking poison, and then lingered for months while evading capture until Binghe was born, and only then died. Which is plausible... but again the narration of Wu Chen really feels like it leans towards the idea that she very quickly died after their last meeting.

I think this might be a case where fanon just makes more sense. Disregard the bi-monthly meetings, have them meet way less frequently, and have it be that right after OPM discovered them at the mountain, he flipped his gourd, imprisoned SXY and then called on the sects to ambush TLJ months later after. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

the only way SXY's pregnancy makes sense if the OPM only discovered it as he "subjected her to torture" AND if she gave birth something like two-three weeks later is if she was in denial of pregnancy. (which is great, i love that it's a thing that can actually happen to people, the human body is wonderful and horrifying).

but even going with that, something that never made sense to me re: SXY taking poison and leaving the water prison is... why the hell did the OPM let her go?? it's canon that he wanted her as "his personal slab of meat" (SY's lovely expression for it) and he had just succeeded in sealing away TLJ and in claiming TLJ had killed her. so why would he just let her go? that doesn't make any sense!

My headcanon is that the OPM never intentionally released SXY fully out of his custody. When she took the poison, he let her out of the high-security Water Prison so she could get proper medical care for the poison and presumably abortion (because he didn't actually want her dead), but he still was keeping her under house arrest. But since house arrest didn't have as much security and SXY was very capable and had other allies within the sect, she was able to escape soon after being released from the Water Prison. (But this was never in the OPM's plans.)

And to make sense of the timeline...I'm sure somewhere in Airplane's wide world of kinks there's a pregnancy acceleration plant or artifact. Maybe she really wasn't very far along when she took the poison, but she realized she wouldn't last long enough to deliver the baby if she waited for the natural progression, so she purposefully grabbed the Pregnancy Accelerator. That could also be part of the explanation for why she was in such bad shape, if the Pregnancy Accelerator is tough on the body.

...but I still kinda like the fanon timeline and explanation better. We can ignore canon sometimes, as a treat. I would bet this wasn't something MXTX thought a lot about, she's on record saying she puts all her focus on the main couple when she writes.

ahaha i mean, a lot of svsss reads like it was thought up on the fly- both LQG and SQH, for instance, read like they were invented the moment they first appeared and not a second sooner- so i'm not demanding canon make sense, just wondering whether there's elements we missed. i like your theory a lot! yeah, if the OPM didn't realize SXY was pregnant until mid-torture, it'd make sense he would go "oh shit okay to the medical wing with you for your abortion" and then SXY, faced with no other choice, did drink the poison, then leapt out the window while he wasn't looking.

It's possible she didn't realise until she was further along so let's say she's near the end of her first trimester or even partly into her second. People have not know they were pregnant until then

Sometimes the baby grows slightly weird and the woman doesn't show for a long time.

So let's say that. Maybe she doesn't have a lot of symptoms due to being a cultivator.

She gets captured and tortured. Tianlang-Jun is tricked and imprisoned immediately but OPM keeps the threat of that as a way to control Su Xiyan as he tortures her. Her pregnancy becomes impossible to ignore and they fight back and forth and he finally claims when she is midway through her third trimester that Tianlang-Jun is going to be imprisoned and offers her a deal which she takes

But it's actually months later

Binghe is born but is a little premature. Viable and able to withstand the circumstances due to being half heavenly demon and the protagonist, but still not full term fully

As a scientific illustrator- this is 100% true and going to review your basics will fix it every goddamn time.  Not only does it keep your skills sharp, when you’re not emotionally invested in the final product of a piece, you relax and your brain makes more/better art juice for you.  So, when you get back to that big/important piece?  You’ll know what to do and how to do it.

Nothing in nature blooms all year round.  Rest, and take care of yourself.

Write a description of an object. write the weather today. Write a made up characterization of a random photo of an actor from the internet as to the character they are in that picture. Write a little story about your pet’s day. Write about spilling soup and make it super dramatic and tragic. Write about someone’s day being ruined and make it funny. Write a meetcute coffeeshop AU of two OCs you’d never put together- maybe from different stories. Write them breaking up.

Write a bunch of short stuff meant for no audience ever and super duper self indulgent.

I found out relatively recently that it really helps if I write short fiction surrounding the novels I write. Like oh? I’m stuck for a bit? Ooh there was that section I wanted to explore but doesn’t fit in the plot really. There was that what-if that could never happen in the actual story but would be fun to explore. It keeps me in the characters’ headspace (tho that’s not always what I’m needing) but not right where they are exactly.

Yes! I have gotten past writers’ block multiple times by writing drabble collections. Making something coherent happen in just 100 words is a very different challenge from writing a long story and it also lets me get past plot points that I don’t want to explore in-depth.

I am also going to have to start drawing studies now…

I don't think we're meant to interpret Yu Ziyuan's accusations about her husband's intentions as projecting, I think it's more supposed to tie into the themes about the toxic nature of grudges and bitterness.

But I do think it's interesting to apply the "every accusation is an admission" logic to her for fun and games.

Like, in that case: Yu Ziyuan deeply regretted agreeing to this arranged marriage. Yu Ziyuan was in love with someone else. Yu Ziyuan had an affair. Yu Ziyuan's favorite kid is actually illegitimate, and she sometimes hates the one that isn't because they're Fengmian's kid and they represent this sham marriage and relationship that she despises.

Fascinating prospect, really. Especially considering that the field is wide open for who she was in love with. Cangse Sanren? Wei Changze? Madam Jin? Wen Zhuliu? Someone else entirely?

Also, if we go with this, which kid isn't Fengmian's? Jiang Cheng's obviously the juicier option what with the succession plus the fact that he's often the focus of his mother's arguments with his father, but then again, maybe he's the focus because he is in fact the only legitimate kid of theirs, and Yu Ziyuan is a lot more tight-lipped about the topic around Yanli because what if someone actually suspected...?

Some more Shen Twins Stuck in a Crystal Stuff

Mu Qingfang held the boy's boney wrist like the child was made of paper. With Shen Qingqiu sitting right next to his brother and glaring daggers at him Mu Qingfang wouldn't date do otherwise.

"Do you remember being inside the crystal?" Mu Qingfang asked. "Or is it just a jump from before to now?"

The boy frowned. "It was like I was sleeping, and dreaming. I'd kinda wake up a little sometimes and know time was passing, but I couldn't wake up all the way."

Shen Qingqiu ran a soothing hand through the little boy's hair.

"Well your meridians are fine, you could use some food but that's easily fixed... I'd like to speak with your brother for a bit, if I have someone bring in a tub would you like to take a bath? We'd put up a curtain so you'd have privacy but wouldn't be alone.

The little boy bit his lip and held the wrist Mu Qingfang had just let go of to his chest. He looked up at his brother - who was still glaring at Mu Qingfang- before nodding once.

"Alright."

The boy-Shen Yuan-warmed up once the bath was set up, smiling and asking Shen Qingqiu what all the various soaps were for. Shen Qingqiu side eyed him for the flea repellent soap but Mu Qingfang was just being safe not judgemental. He'd had to de- bug his fair share of disciples.

Once Shen Yuan was in the tub he and Shen Qingqiu retreated across the room out of the child's earshot.

"What is it?" Shen Qingqiu snapped. Someone was extra snippy today.

"There's nothing of serious concern in his spiritual veins but I'd like to keep monitoring him for a while to make sure nothing comes up as he adjusts- and he shouldn't be cultivating for a while, though he's a little young for that anyway," Mu Qingfang said .

"You aren't keeping him here."

Mu Qingfang nodded. He'd been expecting that. " That's fine," he said. "You should be able to monitor his meridians for me well enough. You two are twins?"

"Yes."

"Identical?"

"Yes."

"Then it's better you monitor his meridians anyway."

Shen Qingqiu narrowed his eyes at Mu Qingfang. "Why?"

"Your meridians, despite whatever changes living has done, share the same identical bases. There's evidence circulating qi between twins is more therapeutic and easier on your systems."

"Fine," Shen Qingqiu said. "I'll do it."

"Thank you Shixiong."

Shen Qingqiu turned on his heels and went to help his brother in the bath.

Mu Qingfang decided not to press his luck and left the room- where he nearly ran into Yue Qingyuan. Mu Qingfang took one look at him and suppressed a groan.

"Mu- Shidi," Yue Qingyuan said. "How is he?"

"Zhangmen-shixiong....they are both fine, and are not to be disturbed."

Liu Qingge wasn't sure what to think of the changes that had happened after that last explosive Peak Lord meeting.

The little street rat that had appeared when that crystal broke was gone, transforming overnight into a fine little lordling, a miniature mirror version of his brother.

They went everywhere together, Shen Qingqiu often carrying the little boy so they could whisper in each other's ears. When he was being carried the boy was in charge of the fan, holding it over Shen Qingqiu's or both their faces as necessary.

Overall Liu Qingge was tempted to call the changes positive. Shen Qingqiu seemed ... Not nicer, but less interested in picking fights, and he had not left the mountain to go down to the brothels since his brother's arrival.

That said Shen Qingqiu was somehow more annoying despite being better behaved.

He had caught the pair near the gates of Bai Zhan the other day, and when he'd asked what Shen Qingqiu was plotting the man had rolled his eyes at him and said he was "just showing Gege which brutes to avoid."

When Liu Qingge demanded he answer that insult with a fight he had just gotten a pair of near identical scoffs.

"Why'd you jump right to fighting?"the little Shen asked. "You should have just insulted us back and then we'd call you dumb and leave. It's not like we're trying to steal your corner spot or something important."

"Peak Lord Liu is sensitive," Shen Qingqiu said snidely. "He can't handle people being mean to him without trying to fight them "

The little boy Shen Qingqiu insisted on calling Gege gave him a pitying look before the pair walked off, leaving him alone and... Ashamed, for some reason.

The sourpuss himself appeared behind the little boy.

"We're fine." Shen Qingqiu said immediately.

"Wei-shidi..." The mini Shen said contemplatively. "Are you the Wan Jian Peak Lord?"

"Yes." Wei Qingwei said. He winked at the little boy.

"Gege-"

"Can I have a sword?"

Shen Qingqiu sighed.

Wei Qingwei grinned. "Once your cultivation is strong enough I would be honored to provide young Lord Shen with a sword."

The boy giggled. "I'm not a lord!"

"Yes you are," Shen Qingqiu said. "Thank you Wei Qingwei, you can go now."

"Bye Peak Lord Wei!" The little boy said.

Wei Qingwei pressed his luck. "If you get your didi's permission I might have some knives you can use until you're big enough for a sword."

"Ooooo!"

"You don't need a knife!" Shen Qingqiu said.

"But didi! What if I need to shank someone?"

Wei Qingwei lost his composure and laughed. "Yes Qingqiu, what if he needs to shank someone?"

Shen Qingqiu shut the door in his face, but Wei Qingwei noticed he was smiling when he did.

I had a very odd dream where a train (or bus?) I was on got yanked into another world. While my dream had nothing to do with SVSSS, it did have my waking self thinking about how hilarious and/or horrifying such a thing could be as an AU.

Imagine Shen Yuan riding the subway, train or bus one day, when something happens and his whole car gets yanked into the world of PIDW. Nobody else in the car knows anything about PIDW, so Shen Yuan finds himself with the self imposed task of keeping this eccentric group of strangers alive in a weird world full of demons, monsters, and aphrodisiac plants.

The group’s first assumption would probably be that they’re still on modern earth, and just got teleported somewhere. Their second assumption, if they come across common folk, might be they somehow ended up in the past.

Then they run into some monster, or people riding on swords with specific uniforms, or a commoner mentions a name or event only Shen Yuan recognizes. The rest of the party debates what sort of Xianxia or Wuxia world they’ve ended up in, while poor Shen Yuan sweats bullets. He knows exactly what world they are in, and they are so screwed.

I have this image of poor beleaguered nerd Shen Yuan successfully protecting and leading this group of primary school kids, their cute teacher, and a handful of grannies and grandpas, while all the other adults and older teens keep wandering off and getting themselves in trouble.

Concept: An Ding Peak disciples and Mobei Jun's faction in the northern court have been under the impression that they're secretly allied for decades, and that they're just supposed to talk about it in code so that the rest of Cang Qiong and/or the demon realms don't find out and pitch a bitch fit over it.

This came about through a combination of several factors. On the demon end, Shang Qinghua was way less circumspect about his identity whenever he was in the demon realms, so Mobei Jun was just flat-out telling his people that the Head Disciple and later Peak Lord of An Ding was his guy, and putting Shang Qinghua in charge of other servants or jobs as he saw fit, so his court faction were like alright cool guess that gives us a leg up in some departments, let's start coordinating with An Ding Peak?

Then on the other end of it, An Ding Peak is like ground zero for Cang Qiong's malcontents anyway, it is simultaneously the most vital peak and the most looked down upon, so reaching out to one of Cang Qiong's enemies to forge an alliance and hold it at the ready just in case they decide they want to overthrow the other peaks and change the hierarchies of the sect forever actually just feels cathartic. Like they probably won't, but knowing that they could is soothing. Shang Qinghua's closest disciples started figuring out the secret during his Head Disciple tenure, because what do you mean Shixiong survived an encounter with one of the most powerful ice demons alive and now suddenly sometimes his house is winter-cold and he can access a whole bunch of things from the northern climes of the demon realms?

The first few disciples stumble upon and then try to have semi-coded conversations with Shang Qinghua about it, which leads them to the conclusion that their shixiong is colluding with demons but doesn't have any plans to betray An Ding and mostly seems to dislike Huan Hua Palace (respectable) and is maaaybe pissed off enough at Bai Zhan to throw a demon at them one day (a sentiment shared by 99.9% of An Ding disciples) (they brought it up and most of it flew over Shang Qinghua's head but when someone was like "ok but are we taking action against the rest of the sect?" he was sardonically like "not unless Liu Qingge breaks another gate this month").

So when Shang Qinghua becomes Peak Lord and some of the more subtle servants of Mobei Jun show up, a lot of the senior disciples are like yup it's go time. They start conspiring to oust the less open-minded dregs of the past peak lord's rule, consolidate Cang Qiong's power overall and An Ding's influence specifically, help tit-for-tat the northern demon lords and specifically Mobei Jun's faction and disputes with his rivals, remove anyone who stumbles upon the plot and can't be trusted, establish trade deals and information brokers and etc.

All the while Shang Qinghua and Mobei Jun are still just like, it's only us two who have an arrangement going on here.

Mobei Jun's servants will often talk about their "mountain clan allies", in a way that leads outsiders to think there's some feral tribe of logistics experts who they've established an alliance with in one of the demon realms many inhospitable and hard-to-reach mountainous borders, while An Ding disciples in-the-know will talk about their "friends in the north", which most of the rest of the sect interprets as just yet another merchant network that they aren't compelled to give a shit about.
