"Old school, right to the face!"
I've always been intrigued by how exactly leftists define "banned" books. I remember seeing some thread on twitter about how "the handmaid's tale" is a banned book
.. You know, the one that got adapted into an incredibly popular and mainstream TV series? That one, yeah
Like is it just a kind of "this book was banned in one primary school somewhere" technicality or what
It's often that, or "somebody, somewhere, challenged this book as being appropriate for K-12 school at some point".
Only rarely do they get into things that were ever limited in availability commercially.
You do get the idea that without resistance, or even with it, some schools would have very sanitized curriculum.
A belief I've long held is that the whole Banned Books thing in schools was an attempt to reverse-psychology kids into reading more of their own volition. Not even that sinister really, I don't think any librarians setting up "Banned Book Week" shelves thought the kids would actually take the kayfabe literally.
Yes. I’ve said it before but the only books you would ever see on those tables that was banned by any government was by Salman Rushdie. And actually historically banned books that the library had, like The Bible or Fanny Hill or Das Capital weren’t on that table. None of these people were ever going to go to bat for The Turner Diaries.
“Banned Books” to librarians and booksellers is a hype thing and, kind of punishment/reward for a parent somewhere questioning if it should be part of the compulsory curriculum or in the school library. It’s about school required and recommended reading and culture war, not censorship.
Actual banned kids books… are mostly racist. Eg. Little Black Sambo, the original Dr Doolittle books, To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street.
well, 1984 and Animal Farm were banned by the Soviet Union, I believe? not an existing government but it was a government at the time.
I probably ought to clarify that I don't like or support pulling books for ideological reasons! it's bad thing to do. it is bad to pull Harry Potter back when Evangelicals thought it promoted witchcraft and it's bad to pull Harry Potter now that its author is a transphobe. I just recognize that there is always an unavoidable element of curation in the selection of a school library, and you can't skip around the part where people who don't agree with you also get the participate in that process by saying "you asking to pull books is banning them but my side refusing to stock them is just normal common sense."
There's this book by the Marquis De'Sade (from whom the word 'sadist' comes from) called '120 Days of Sodom'. It was adapted into a really infamous Italian movie. It's a book that revolves around a bunch of French aristocrats treating their servants horribly and abusing them, sexually and in other ways. It's really squeamish. I was written purely to be crude. This is something to bring up whenever someone talks about 'banned books' because I doubt someone would start defending this.
Reblog this picture of me holding a Family Size box of Honey Nut Cheerios? I’d really appreciate it.
How can I say no to such a great photo and such a polite request?
you know, it’s interesting in Fate that Medea and Souichiro are referred to as newlyweds. As in, explicitly married. Which leaves one of two options:
Despite the fact that Medea definitely doesn’t have any government records they somehow managed to fill out a marriage certificate and turn it in
The funnier option, they got Kirei to do it
im not interested in glory through combat anymore. i do not want to be a part of this shit.
