yall i just discovered an old ao3 account that I made with an email I don't think exists anymore. I have 8 published fics on there that I completely fucking forgot about and they have lots of COMMENTS AND KUDOS THAT I NEVER GOT NOTIFICATIONS FOR
Saw someone on a tiktok comment section saying, and i quote, that "The reason some teenage boys don’t like season 4 isn’t because they’re sexist but because the men’s team js now fighting for Europe and trying to win the league but the story is now focused elsewhere. Trust me, the reactions would be the exact same if ted lasso went to manage a different men’s team". And I strongly disagree because the show was never about how well richmond was doing, it was about ted being able to get the best out of every single player, and once he's done that, his job is done, which is pretty much the reason he left at the end of season 3. With this new season we get to see ted doing what he does best while also navigating through all the challenges that female teams have to face. And yeah, it is sad that the characters we grew to love through 3 seasons aren't coming back, but it's not about them anymore, their story has been told and now it's time for a new one. And about the whole "reactions would've been the same if he went to coach a different men's team" thing, yeah they would because why tf would he do that??? The reason Ted went back was because Rebecca, Higgins and Keeley asked him to, so yeah if he went all the way back to england just to coach a different team after deciding to move back to america to be with his family, it would be weird and out of character. Trying to excuse sexism with the argument that "oh they're just mad 'cause the men's team is doing well now but the focus is elsewhere" is utter bullshit.
We have the entire spectrum of masc to fem women on our screens right now every week and all half the tag wants to talk about is how much they want Jamie back smh
and I will admit it, the "any book by bell hooks" bit from Rebecca made me laugh my ass off because I go to a tiny liberal arts college that gave me a bell hooks book along with my acceptance letter and acceptance socks (a bougie liberal arts college, I know)
Something really deeply important to me about the new Ted Lasso episode is how they talked about the actual epidemic of ACL tears in women's football/soccer.
14 players in the National Women's Soccer League have torn their ACL's in this season alone. Megan Rapinoe, one of my all-time favorite players and a huge voice in women's soccer, has torn her ACL 3 times (not unlike Alice Chilton).
I grew up playing soccer with my sisters and watched them go through three ACL surgeries in three years, playing soccer and basketball, one of which was on the same date a year later the first tear happened. And then when I was in high school, I saw three friends in one year alone tear their ACLs, and one of them was a childhood best friend.
So when I watched this new episode with my mom, and we saw the striker go down, and then heard about Alice experiencing back-to-back ACL tears? It felt so so huge and important. That's a form of representation and that's diligence from the writers' team in covering issues that are deeply affecting these specific players.
Further Ted Lasso bits and bobs after going through the tag:
I don't think Rebecca was necessarily wrong to pick Ted over Alice for the head coaching job - the problem is her reasons for not considering Alice in the first place.
Ted is a consummate salesman with a proven PR record in Richmond, and that's what the Lady Greyhounds need to help them get off the ground - someone to get the public believing in them. And no, Alice can't do that, but that's not why Rebecca passed on her.
What's Rebecca's first reaction when Higgins brings up Alice's candidacy? "She doesn't like me." Mmhmm. Why is that the deciding factor?
Rebecca seems to be slipping into running Richmond as her social club. This renders Alice unhireable by virtue of not being Rebecca's friend or wanting it. Compare and contrast with Keeley, whose competence got her noticed and hired because first she was nice to Rebecca in the women's loo. It's not that ability doesn't matter to Rebecca; it's that she doesn't seem to consider it until the potential employee passes her personal likeability threshold. Which is a pretty foolish way to do your hiring.
Secondly, all the talk of growling has to be deliberate, because I didn't hear a sound like that out of Alice's throat, but it is the default mode of our man Roy. And yet here he is coaching the men's team without a single mention of how his verbal affectations affect his job qualifications.
And yes, that's probably in part because he was always good to Rebecca, and because he's her friend. But let's be real: it's also because he's a man. And a man can wear the same monochrome clothes and unsmiling face every day and be just fine if he does the rest of his job well. But Alice can't.
That said, I'm now hoping we get to see our two Richmond grumps bond over their shit knees. And that Roy gets surgery if he needs it, because the amount of aspirin he was taking was not good.
like i said it was a bit heavy handed, and i didn't like the way rebecca behaved in tbis episode, but i am actually glad they had rebecca have to face her own misogyny. there was no way to have ted coach a women's team without facing it.
i find it interesting how badly she treated alice - not just not considering her (or any woman) for the job, but seeming to dislike her solely because she's not friendly enough (despite her clear talent and passion for the role, and despite rebecca getting on well enough with roy), and even at the end of the episode she talks over alice and chastises her for not phrasing her criticisms politely enough. in some ways rebecca is similar to nate in that as soon as they had authority over others, they wanted to abuse it to feel powerful (s1 rebecca, s2 nate). but i thought we had moved past that with rebecca. it'll be interesting to see how the rest of the series goes in that regard
How I think Survivor would go down if it was Class 1-A
For the niche crossover you never knew you needed
Aizawa is watching American TV with Present Mic and sees Survivor and is like "oh, this is perfect"
There will be three tribes, and it will follow the same premise with challenges that will allow a limited use of quirks, and they will not strive them (that's lowkey illegal, but maybe they still will because hey UA)
There will be an all-girls alliance at the merge, and the only one that survives them is Bakugou (he's a feminist)
The final three are Tsu, Bakugo, and Mina
more under the cut bc i just learned how to do that today
Blue Tribe: Kaminari, Kirishima, Mina, Mineta, Aoyama, Sato
Red Tribe: Uraraka, Izuku, Tsu, Hagakure, Shouji, Sero, Tokoyami
I have read several cosmetic surgery essays and heard the arguments for and against. But there is something I am sensing and noticing in conversation around age, cosmetic surgery, skincare, and trends. People, women specifically, don’t want to age well, they want to not age at all. Which seems obvious and it is.
But what I want to promote and live out is the idea of aging well. I will look my age, but feel younger because I treated my body with care and respect. I’ll have wrinkles, but my body will be able to go on hikes with my friends, play with the children my friends and family have, and not feel like my body is falling apart at the seams. My hair may be gray, but my mind will be alert. I will still be able to have the conversation I have now, but they will be deeper and wiser.
I don’t want to miss out on what could be the incredible joys of aging- I want to be able to experience them to the fullest.
