Living his best life
My followers know I hate talking about politics and current events, and generally refuse to do so, but this is important.
A bill has been introduced in the US that would make all pornography a federal crime. Owning it. Creating it. Distributing it.
Under this law, fanart of nude characters would be a federal crime.
Under this law, depictions of homosexuality or simply being transgender, would be considered pornography and a federal crime.
This bill is not going to pass.
However, the reason for this bill is to continue to push the "overton window". The reason for this bill is to make banning pornography seem more and more normal to everyone until they can actually do that.
And remember, they consider depictions of gay characters and transgenders characters "pornography" in any context, including platonic.
They have been working on this for a decade now and it has been working.
If you are one of the people in fandom who thinks that "nasty" porn on AO3 should be banned because it's "icky" or "immoral", then this mental scam is working on you.
Censorship is never about protecting people.
Censorship is always about control.
Do not let the rising moral panic affect your mind and make you weak to propaganda that lets others control you and control what you watch and read.
Do not fall for the scam.
When they say they are going to ban "pornography" it means they're going to ban anything they don't like by calling it "pornography" and they don't like you!!
You can despise NSFW content all you want, but please understand that there's really bad consequences if the ban becomes legal.
20 years ago, I was a moderator on a LOTR forum that included fanfic, fanart, and roleplaying. It banned all LBGTQ characters, content, and discussion because they were not "family friendly."
No hand-holding or kisses between characters of the same gender in fanart or fic. That was "sexually explicit," while it was perfectly fine to write shippy Aragorn/Arwen stuff or to roleplay a pair of Dwarves eloping. (But not horse girls of Rohan). There was a forum function that let characters be forum-married, but NOT if the players or characters identified as the same gender. (Nonbinary? Genderfluid? What's that? Never heard of it.) Not a whisper of discussion of Legolas/Gimli or Sam/Frodo or any Silmarillion ship.
I pushed back hard in the admins' private forum, saying that there were gay teenagers. I said members like me resented the fact that our very existence was not deemed "family friendly. " We were part of the community, too. That the double standard of what was called "sexually explicit" was ridiculous.
My fellow admins honestly were progressive folks and sympathized, and a few were good friends, but they said they just couldn't take the legal risk. There were still anti-gay laws on the books in many states, and it was a US-hosted site.
Since our forums allowed teens age 13 and up to participate, we had to stick to what was acceptable in mainstream US society and not push boundaries. In the name of inclusivity, we had to make sure we followed standards that would allow all teens to be able to participate in Tolkien lore discussions and fandom, since that was the site's purpose. We couldn't afford to be slapped by a lawsuit or have authorities sent after us by outraged parents.
Never mind that the vast majority of our 50,000+ members were, much like Tumblr, grown-ass adults. (No swearing, either)
This was one of the biggest LOTR websites during the heyday of the Jackson films.
Imagine NO GAY CONTENT ALLOWED WHATSOEVER AND QUEER FOLK CAN'T BE OUT IN PUBLIC in, say, the Marvel fandom when Winter Soldier came out.
Livejournal was one of the few places that allowed it, and it was constantly under siege by "concerned" groups getting communities wiped out by the dozens. Including RL survivor support groups of various kinds of abuse, because they mentioned forbidden topics.
That was the environment under which AO3 was founded 2 years later. A place where we could archive our stuff for the audience it served, tag it with what it was, and readers could use tags to make their own decisions about what content they wanted to read or not, instead of having others decide for them.
But as my fellow admins said, online censorship reflected the world we lived in, and vice versa.
LBGTQ+ = indecent = inappropriate to be out in public. We'd be attacked for holding hands, because think of the children.
It It still is that way for trans people in many places. Evangelicals ban porn (which they themselves probably watch), and then they expand the definition of porn to include... people. It's already happened in some states. In others, laws were never taken off the books.
it may be from the 1800s, but by golly, they'll dig it up.
So um. You know that 5calls app/site? Might want to call reps this week and remind them you're paying attention to their bullshit. (you can call at night and leave a message if you don't want to talk to a human; staff generally just tally calls FOR and AGAINST specific issues)
Btw much as I love to make fun of twitter and reddit's business decisions, I have 0% trust in tumblr's management to not go a similar route so this is your gentle reminder that you should regularly go to your blog settings to export your blog. That's a fancy way of saying you can download a backup of your blog so if everything goes down you'll still have a backup of your posts & convos.
It's gonna come as a surprise to most of you, but if you don't want to do that for whatever reason you're allowed to not reblog this post. I'm not holding a gun to your head here I'm just trying to spread the word for people who do want a backup of their stuff.
Also, made this guide for backup Tumblr blogs (ft. export blog method, and python 3 script method):

It's not that the Republicans and the Democrats are the same…obviously. But for decades – since Clinton – the Dems have sided with neoliberal economics, just like their Republican counterparts, so the major differences between the two related to overt discrimination, to the exclusion of the economic policies that immiserated working people, with the worst effects landing on racial minorities, women, and gender minorities.
So the Dems stood against discrimination in mortgage lending – but not for the minimum wage that would have lifted the lowest paid workers out of poverty so the could afford a mortgage. They stood for abortion rights, but against Medicare For All, which meant all women had the right to an abortion, but the poorest women couldn't afford one. And of course, in a country where racial and gender discrimination were still the order of the day, the poorest and most vulnerable Americans were racialized, women, disabled, and/or queer.
The Dems' embrace of Reaganomics meant that working people of all types experienced steady decline over 40 years: stagnating wages, economic precarity, increased indebtedness, and rising prices for health care, education, and housing. When Trump figured out that he could campaign on these issues, Dems had no response. Trump's "Make America Great Again" was meant to appeal to a time when working Americans were – on average, depending on their whiteness, maleness and straightness – better housed, better paid, and better cared for.
Of course, those benefits were unevenly felt: America was slow to extend the New Deal to racial minorities, women, disabled people, and other disfavored groups. Trump's genius was to marry white supremacy to economic grievance, tricking white workers into blaming their decline on women, brown and Black people, and queers – and not on the billionaires who had grown so much richer even as workers got poorer.
But Trump couldn't have pulled this trick off without the Dem establishment's total unwillingness to confront the hollowness of their economic policies. From Pelosi's "We're capitalists and that's the way it is" to Hillary Clinton's catastrophic campaign slogan, "America is already great," the Dems' answer to workers' fear and anger was, "You are wrong, everything is fine." Imagine having had your house stolen in the foreclosure crisis after Obama decided to "foam the runways" for the banks by letting them steal their borrowers' homes and then hearing Hillary Clinton tell you "America is already great":

Racial and gender justice matter, of course, but when they're pursued without considering economic justice, they're dead ends. The point of racial and gender justice can't merely be firing half of the 150 straight white men who control 99% of the country's capital and replacing them with 75 assorted women, queers and people of color. The worst-treated workers in America are also its most discriminated-against workers, so the best way to help women, racialized people, and other disfavored minorities is to help workers: protect unions, raise the minimum wage, defend tenants, cancel student debt, and give everyone healthcare. In the same way that a special tax on incomes over $1m will disproportionately affect straight white men, an increase in the minimum wage will disproportionately benefit women and people of color – as well as the majority of straight white men who are also getting fucked over by people with $1m salaries.

being the second child is so lame when your older brother has no fortunes to inherit or power to come into. all of my scheming younger brother tendencies are being completely wasted like it’s not even worth putting all my efforts into usurping him and taking his place as heir. it’s not even worth it
like obviously I’m still going to do it because plotting and scheming are natural responses to being the second child but it’s just not the most lucrative career option anymore

NEW FISH JUST DROPPED
I KNOW that playing God is morally wrong, but holy HELL, it looks fun.
Why is it playing God? We aren’t violating any natural laws. God set the parameters of the universe to allow these things. There’s nothing wrong with it, there’s no hubris in learning more about how to manipulate the universe around us.
We made a whole-ass fish.
The reason this was accidental BTW is because they used paddlefish eggs as a negative control group for a breeding experiment on sturgeons because the scientists, quite naturally, assumed that they were SO unrelated it would be genetically impossible for them to mate. Like. I cannot stress enough to you how these creatures last related ancestors were
140 MILLION YEARS BACK.
If you don't know how far that is, that's basically the start of the cretaceous. Let me simplify that for you even further. Chimpanzees and humans seperated, what, 5 or 6 million years ago?
This is basically like if humans could hybridise with THESE THINGS.
This is the sort of thing that should be impossible. They used those eggs to be ABSOLUTELY 100% SURE NOTHING WOULD HAPPEN.
And then THEY GOT FISH OUT OF IT.
Like. You can quite clearly understand why they didn't think anything would happen. WE ARE MORE RELATED TO BLUE WHALES THAN THESE THINGS.
THE AMERICAN PADDLEFISH AND THE STURGEON ARE SO COMPLETELY UNRELATED THAT THIS IS NOT PLAYING GOD. IF ANYTHING THIS IS AN ACT OF GOD.
THE SCIENTISTS HAD NO BLAME IN THIS BECAUSE NOTHING LIKE THIS HAD EVER HAPPENED BEFORE
It sort of goes against the rules of genetics a bit.
Oh i forgot to add
THESE THINGS, FOR HYBRIDS, HAD A REALLY HIGH SURVIVAL RATING. LIKE 70% OF THEM SURVIVED.
To put that into perspective, getting a blue whale and a squirrel and trying to hybridise them is more sensible, and that wouldn't produce anything but getting you banned from science. Most animals that aren't plants can barely hybridise two degrees away from each other.
BUT THESE TWO ENTIRELY UNRELATED FISH create PERFECTLY HEALTHY HYBRIDS.
the scientists literally had to do the tests AGAIN just to be like "okay this is real right. This is actually like, not a fluke, this works right" and it worked again. They just Can!
It clearly wasn't a fluke. This is a fluke.
